If you were guaranteed a sell out with no announcement you should do whatever the f**k you want critics be damned. This aligns with what I’ve been rattling on about for years. It’s going to sell out, so get risky, get interesting, take a chance, challenge people. 
 

Forget the safe, same old stuff, dull nonsense. Seriously Rod Stewart is one of the poorest bookings in the history of the festival. It’s laughable.

 

NB, this mainly applies to the larger stages, there’s plenty interesting stuff to be found elsewhere

it sells out partially cause people expect good lineups with more 'big' artists than you can see at any other festival. Yeah, it sells out in record time every year for over a decade but 2008 won't feel all that long ago in the eyes of some of the higher ups.

I understand the "big, successful festival with 100+ stages should have less popular artists on the main 5 stages" argument as well as I understand the "slightly smaller artist subbing should headline instead of a bigger artist" argument.

If you're saying Rod Stewart isn't suitable for a legends slot, you're dribbling. Guy sells out stadiums and has a massive catalogue of huge hits from 70s and 80s. Must be one of the biggest acts they've ever had in the slot!

Rod Stewart is an absolute legend, and having seen him twice before (Hyde Park and Isle of Wight) I would thoroughly recommend him. If you don't like him, then plenty more for people like you to tune into. Such as Basil Brush, Mr Tumble, or The Wurzels...

I'm talking about your typical lad. They tend to either be into hip hop / dance or rock music mostly or maybe a combination of them all. They don't tend to be first in queue for Taylor swift tickets do they? The clips of her mega successful tour kind of show what her main demographic is.

We will have to agree to disagree on this. I have seen him once in 1978 at Bellevue, Manchester on his Blondes have more fun tour. Atlantic Crossing was an LP on repeat play in my bedroom aged 16. Alongside David Bowie Hunky Dory and J J Cale Troubadour. 

I was lucky to see Bowie twice, not at Glastonbury but I am happy in that I saw him. 

I am looking forward to seeing Rod again, I enjoy some nostalgia. Macca and Elton were fab! 

Sadly I never saw J J Cale. 

And I don't have a blue rinse.....

Rob will be amazing! He has got the hits, people will love it. 120k singing every lyrics in the sunshine. Fantastic!

The older you are the more chance you will have had to get to know folk who would offer you some sort of job and way in to the festival. Generally after that once your in, your in! So yeah I reckon the workers demographic is pretty highly biased to older folk.

 

As a 50 year old volunteer myself I have to say the thought of doing a punters Glasto gives me the shivers, not because it's not great but it would probably kill me. Having a few mandated "thy must not be twatted" periods just makes the whole experience more survivable and enjoyable IMO. I don't know anybody my age who could hit it like they could 30 years ago.

 

Personally I leave the pop stuff to the kids, not my thing, however if that's what the young uns like give them a bit of it. They will always stumble into better stuff around the festival as well, I'm sure my tastes have been broadened over the years stumbling into random places at festivals.

First saw her when she performed in the Avalon. The new stuff seems a departure from the country style from her last albums. More dance, liking the EP though. It does distract from what a good voice she has though imo.

They sell all the tickets so quickly without anyone seeing the line up precisely because they try to provide something for everyone. If they start getting arrogant, thinking they can book whatever they want and disappearing up their own pretentious behinds that’s when it will go wrong.

 

You then go on to describe the line up as ‘not really that out there’ which I totally agree on but you think they should push it much further away from the mainstream and their algorithms? 
 

Also this isn’t what you were saying before. You were complaining about them catering to the older age group. There’s enough capacity on the line up to cut across all the age groups so why would they consciously shut those older people out?

Rod Stewart is a brilliant booking imo. Will draw the biggest crowd of the weekend.

 

He's also one of those acts that I would only see at a festival, 0 chance I'm ever buying a ticket for one his shows, but I will definitely be there singing Maggie May with many others.

Maybe, just maybe, what they want to do is put on a festival that appeals to a broad range of punters and makes a lot of people happy? Talking about it like they're doing this stuff out of obligation or because they have to may be completely missing the point
