Absolutely - just to illustrate that point, 2011 was by far the least interest I have had in the Pyramid headliners (U2, Coldplay, Beyoncé). I don’t doubt how huge/popular they are but just not my thing. All I saw was a bit of U2 which I don’t regret but left to go and see Fatboy Slim. Won’t see him this year but Leftfield into FBS appeals to me more than most Park top 2s.

I thought 2011 was probably the weakest overall lineup of all the fests I've been to.  I thought 2019 was great, 2022 also but 2013 stands out a a vintage year for me.  However I also recall that it was Clash Hell so even though the lineup was strong, I only got to see about 50% of what I'd liked to have.  Friday evening all the way to headliners was fucking stacked to the gills as I recall and missing Portishead and AM for Chic was probably the toughest clash decision I've ever had.  Think I called it right but fuck me, that Portishead set gave me all the feels even a week later on TV.

That clash was one of the toughest ever. My friends initially dragged me to AM - not a huge fan but glad I saw them on the Pyramid playing the album I like the most and won’t see them again. Saw a large chunk of Chic though which was epic. Portishead was amazing to watch when home but I’ll usually choose the party option if there is one.

Thinking about it, I messed up my other comment. Just checked 2011 again and it was pretty decent actually.

From the five Glastonbury's I've been to, I'd say they'd go in this order:

2017>2014>2011>2009>2010

In terms of eclectic tastes, the more recent festivals do a better job of incorporating more genres and that definitely helps with the line ups for me in general as opposed to the earlier festivals I attended when there was almost entire days on the Pyramid or Other for indie/rock. So far, on paper, 2023 would easily sandwich between 2017 and 2014. Another few names and it'd easily be bumped up to first place.

I just compared the Park poster from 2022 and 2023. Aside from perhaps the massive support for Wet Leg and a really decent secret set from Jack White, there doesn't look a lot of difference in calibre from one year to the other.

It's just a stupid gimmick that doesn't work when everyone knows in advance what's happening. Then all you've done is put a huge act on at a time / stage that can't handle the capacity

Not strictly on topic, just wondering which stages, outside of the main ones will have live bands playing 'til late?

The likes of the SE Corner, Arcadia etc will be electronic / dance. Would the vast majority of the later, smaller stages (running to 3am / 6am) all be electronic or do some of these venues have live bands playing late? That's making a big assumption that I'll still be trucking into the wee small hours 🙂 Thanks

Both the Diner and the Truth stage (or whatever it's called this year) have live bands until late. (6am)

Smaller venues such as Small World in Green Futures. Possibly Strummerville, I've never been so not sure.

Quite a few of the bars/smaller venues still have bands on until late.  Bimble Inn and Croissant Neuf do for definite.  I thought BBC Introducing went on quite late also but don't know for sure.  I think the Rabbit Hole has live bands on late too, but I've never been in!

For me personally it's a strong lineup, which has made missing out on tickets even worse. I'm not that fussed about getting 'rarities' when it comes to Glastonbury. I'd be more than happy spending all weekend watching acts I love playing my favourite festival, regardless of how many times I've seen them. And this year has quite a few.

There will be plenty for the guitar band lovers and dance music haters once we get the full Pyramid and Other stage line-ups.

Leeds and Reading are "just" three/four (?) day concerts. Glastonbury is a festival.

…and if it’s a choice of that or everyone getting to see them on the Pyramid, sure, but I don’t think Glastonbury could have got Radiohead and Pulp to play the Pyramid that year lower down on the announced line-up than Coldplay, Beyoncé and U2.

Radiohead very rarely play Uk shows and Pulp had been inactive for years but when either of them play they generally headline (at least at that point) and get paid very well for doing so.

It was great for a period but I agree it needs to change. Still hoping Pulp will be a TBC on the Pyramid, confirmed as them on the day.

They are definitely a festival. Something like APE is multiple day concerts

tent = festival imo and the antics that come along with having a tent. if its the lack of late night then leeds has that anyway

It's the way it's run, arena completely separate from camping, checks between the two, restrictions on alcohol being brought into the arena etc

Lack of areas such as craft, kids, healing etc

But even more so it's an attitude thing, both from the punters and the organizers.

The only large event I go to every year is Glastonbury, no interest in any of the others.

Went to Leeds once, only because I was being paid a lot to put up the long drops. It was hell.

Skip, you're confusing 'what you want from a festival' with 'what is a festival' 

They come in all shapes and sizes and with different features and pros and cons - just like us.

I wouldn't even go that far... you don't have to camp at a festival.   There are plenty of examples of great festivals with no camping, just like this beautiful one... multiple stages / venues / artists / days, no tents or campsites!
