Glastonbury don't have enough money to put on the "exact same show"

Just having a read through this morning's Guardian article and this struck me..

Quote

In October, Glastonbury made headlines when it announced that ticket prices would rise by £55 to £340 (including booking fee). “We put it up [by] the minimum we could,” said Eavis. “In order to do the exact same show as last time, we would have had to put £100 on the ticket. That’s the amount that costs have gone up.”

So they're not going to be able to do the same stuff this year... what will be cut?

I think people are mis-reading this.

She's suggesting that to pull off the exact same line up as last year, would cost 100 quid more a ticket. Shes using last years lineup, an absolutely slammed one coming out of the pandemic which is near impossible to repeat, as a base comparison

That's my take too......but I dunno who cost them so much last time around.

Kendrick wouldn't've been cheap, surely. Diana Ross too. Macca. Although £100 on each ticket is about 20 million.

Surely they shouldn't have acted irresponsibly last year then?

Wasn't Kendrick one of R/L highest ever paid performers? He certainly wouldn't have been cheap for what was for all intents and purposes a European exclusive show (yes, yes, he did a warm up in Italy).

I was under the impression a lot of them only get paid and its an in and out job for them ?

Not worth doing it for many of them.

the ticket is worth more than the pay most of them would get really. unless you a big act on arcadia, iicon or temple, sonic etc your playing to a couple hundred people tops

Wouldn't it be more costly to escort all these acts out of such a big place? I'd do a runner if I was them lol

I bet a lot of acts on the smaller stages just play for a ticket don't they?

Not even that a lot of the time. I remember Beans on Toast explaining it the one year - at his level (around five years ago) there were two types of gigs at the festival: those that come with a ticket, and those that don't. You need the first one to get in, before you can book in any others. If you take a look at wherever the likes of Beans or Mik play each year, it's much certain that only the biggest of those venues offers a ticket.

I read a post from a well known DJ a few years back who's name I cant remember and he basically said its not worth doing Glastonbury unless you want to tick a box on your played list.

If they're looking at it from a purely financial perspective, then that's absolutely true.

Even with name value DJs though there's plenty who still do play for a reduced or even no fee simply because they enjoy going to the Festival - so if they put aside the "this is my job" aspect, fundamentally they get an elevated level of access to the best party on earth in return for pressing play on their laptop and waving their hands around for an hour or two.

I can’t imagine many of the Williams Green acts were paid obscene amounts?

Not just the acts though, it’s the tent itself, sound infrastructure and staffing. Hiring and paying for that alone would be a lot more than making spaces for traders, which by all accounts make a shedload for the festival.
