Headliners 2023

It's very odd how angry people are about them playing. I think Arctic Monkeys are a load of w*nk but fully accept they deserve to be booked and people like them.

I think part of it is a weird cultural thing. I've said a few times, they're kinda gross. They ooze 80s/90s toxic masculinity, both in their attitude and their music. They are very much of that culture and it's not something they can really change.

But what's also odd, is that unlike many acts to whom that applies, there's also the fact that as far as well can tell, they've never actually done anything wrong. No abuse of partners, no sleeping with underage girls, no real actual nasty scandals. There's the one song with the racism which they've distanced themselves from, but there's no reason to cancel them. And people would love to cancel them, because, as I say, they're "gross". But they can't, because they appear to actually be relatively well behaved boys (and girl now).

But I think it's really hard to actually explain that, I'm not sure I've even managed it, it's the idea of their attitude being at odds with what you expect from Glasto.

(The Stones are in a similar category, but it was a long time ago when they played *and* they were undoubtedly a bigger booking)

not sure why the sudden obsession from some of having 3 bands you love headline the pyramid ...isnt it better if you have a night or 2 you could spend elsewhere?

The massive price increase.

It's not worthwhile at the current price to go spend most of the day hanging around the Avalon Cafe, as nice as that might be. You have that experience for a fraction of the price at other festivals.

I appreciate Skip's attitude and approach, but it's worth noting he gets in for free and said there's no chance he'd ever actually go if he had to pay. You can look at it differently then, you're not concerned about getting value for your money. For those of us paying for tickets the headliners have to matter at this point as it's how you justify half the ticket price.

im kinda hoping maybe The Prodigy are on the Other that night.

Prodigy? With all the oldies being on the Pyramid this year, would they fill the Other top slots with some more nostalgia acts?

Hoping the Other headliners will balance out the lineup with some fresher names.

They were supposed to headline the other the what Keith killed himself and they are available this year, I think they are kinda nailed on somewhere.

haha I agree... I don't like anyone speaking bad about my hometown apart from me.

Bloody shithole 😂

my hometown also so I reserve the right to also call it a shithole (which is very much what it is) and also slander the football team no matter how much I love them, or the town, deep down on the inside!

Saw Elton there last summer and was bloody good.

For sure it makes a massive difference, at least for me. But I'm not sure that the headliners have to matter due to the ticket cost. There is a huge amount of quality entertainment away from the Pyramid, both The Other Stage and WH regularly host big headliners, e.g. if you're more into Hip Hop than rock then Public Enemy are bigger than The Stones. Then there's the massive variety of top T&C acts, add up the cost of seeing them individually.

The reasons I'd never pay to go aren't related to who is playing. Have explained in another post somewhere.

given our headliners look like a 2000s R&L i wonder if they might change up the other opener slot perhaps and get some kind of female fronted act. not sure who but would be good for it not to be our 12th 00s male indie band in a row

But isn't The Prodigy more of a smaller festivals affair nowadays? A bit like Kasabian.

Nah they are deffo Other Stage size headliner act still, I'd rather someone fresher don't get me wrong but I would be very surprised to not see them booked.

They were booked for it in 2020 so think they will get that slot again

Their shows are definitely smaller than kasabian's now (kasabian have definitely toured wide, prodigy less so but similar size shows) who around the 2019 were bigger to begin with

Elton John did not and would not headline R&L's in the 2000's or probably ever

I can understand not knowing songs by name, to a point, but with the sheer number of wedding discos in existence, it feels a bit of a stretch to say you wouldn't recognise Sweet Child O' Mine or Just Can't Get Enough.

I’ve always said I do know Sweet Child of Mine. But none of the others.

Blimey you don’t half over complicate things don’t you 😂

People don’t see GnR as “Gross” they just see them as a bit dated and having gone well past the point they would’ve been a relevant booking.

Sometimes the simple answer is the correct answer!

Alright, alright, back to headliners then.

Given this is headliners for 2023 at a broad canter, any stabs in the dark for Park toppers this year?

Pure speculation but would be overjoyed with any of these:

Angel Olsen
Yo La Tengo
New Pornographers
Suede
Weyes Blood
Spoon
Spiritualized
FKA twigs

Yeah there's great stuff and many a festival I've seen maybe 5 bands and then a load of Cabaret and Circus acts. My default is flitting between T&C and Avalon. If tickets were £200 still I could still justify that. But at the current price, I could do a weekend comedy festival, a weekend folk festival, and then go se La Clique or Cirque de Soleil. And probably still have £50 left over.

Everyone has a number of headliners they need to be in to to make it worthwhile for them. For you it's still zero, for me it's gone up to one for the first time with the price this year. For others I can understand it being two or even three.

Fair enough - It's certainly why I see it as a weird booking, so it's probably a bit of both.

    • Another note, if I didn't mention the food in the arena for main stage is right at the back. Bands wise they do very well for but as a festival so far they pros are outweighed quite heavily currently for me.
    • On another note for RIP as an event, there is some good things but there are so many things people going to UK festivals would hate and how far behind they are.  Consistent network and water, beer and pretzel like food is brought around to buy in the crowds. Topping up on the wristband is good. The camping and food arrangement is not good, you really need cooking kit. Water points inside the arena are bonkers, water points in camping are a faff unless you are close enough in general camp. Merch stands are crazy. You MASSIVELY need to think about your lidl shop for camping and try and do it so you've one stop. It's definitely worth it getting to a camping shop here, picking up a rolley between your mates and stacking it for the walk back....lidl is cheap though, not hard getting in but Thursday queues getting in and into the camping is mad. You have to register first for a wristband as well leaving any bigger bags behind so pull to a side if only two and do it separately. I was joining a WhatsApp group for solo camp so went with the flow but I've learnt. Had it been me or just two my tent would have been down much quicker.  Big final note, I got a fresh and black 3 man from decathlon before coming and put in bigger suitcase with my airbed and sleeping bag...do this. Take a smaller option for your clothes. If you go to Munich first, book your train to Nuremberg as far in advance as you can....very important!....it hikes crazy. Probably bettee overall for baggage sizes to do BA both ways but you do then need to go back to Munich after too. Use the B&B hotel hbf the night before....its very nice, comfortable, cheap and within 10 minutes of the station which also serves as a transport stop 15 minutes from the registration.  Get up literally like 5am with everything back the night before, shower and go. Transport is free anyway for festival ticket holders during the duration.  Would I just choose to travel in each day and back to a hotel?, on the basis of sleep and getting accommodation cheap enough for 3 nights i might just do especially if I picked the ticket up early enough. It doesn't feel like a festival in a normal sense....unless you are in general yoi have to exit on the paths outside the camping to walk down and in which also applies for getting water so have a stock up. Toilets are in the camping.
