2024 Headliners

This has been great this afternoon, in the words of EM Forster, 'How can I tell what I think till I see what I say?'

I've realised I'm definitely in the 'It's not you, it's me' stage of my relationship with Glastonbury.

By old legacy acts, you mean worlds biggest artists.

Who knows?   They clearly don't have a clue what they are doing!

Thats it? Cause I mean if iplayer wasnt geo locked theres a whole other load of people tuning in. Theyre literally saying no to extra revenue because of this. The festival is trying to find new revenue streams but they literally want to keep the festival from being accessed to the rest of the planet and the ad buys would sure come in handy with all that extra traffic.

Glastonbury booked Fred Again, Lil Nas X, Wizkid, Central Cee, Nova Twins, Raye, Young Fathers, Ezra Collective, Say She She, Maisie Peters, Sudan Archives, Black Country New Road, Flo, Rina Sawayama, Caroline Polachek, Wunderhorse, Aitch, The Last Dinner Party, Fever Ray, The Comet Is Coming, Obongjayar, Thundercat, Viagra Boys, Weyes Blood, Benefits, Big Joanie, Sherelle, Eliza Rose, Nia Archives etc etc to play in 2023, but sadly it has no progressive vision for music 😀

I wouldn't normally quote myself twice in one day, but I'm posting from a desktop for the first time in about a decade and I keep seeing this out the corner of my eye every time I look at this thread.

Its the price you pay to have a huge amount of infrastructure provided by the bbc, film crews etc etc

I'm sure they could get someone else to broadcast it for profit, like Sky who do IOW quite often - but then you get far less money

There's probably a good reason why Reading - a very profit focused festival, also uses the BBC.

The festival managed to get Billie Eilish and Kendrick in the past few years so they've shown they can get a contemporary headliner. Primavera and other festivals appear to be able to sell tickets and remain contemporary.

So you didn't answer my questions but held up Primavera Sound as a shining example of contemporary headliners on the same year they had PSB, Blur, Depeche and New Order on their top line.

They did have Calvin Harris too but is he even contemporary, after 20 years in the business?

Not been following rumours this year. Thought I'd quickly come on here & find out. Read 2 pages of people arguing about the type of acts that should be headlining & no actual suggestions of who is rumoured.

To add my 2 cents to the debate ideally the headliners should be 3 very different acts. Its great to have a pyramid headliner to look forward to all day & booking varied acts is best way to ensure most people get the joy of that feeling. There is millions to do at the festival away from the Pyramid & I always love going to loads of different stages, but I still find it disappointing years were there are no Pyramid headliners I'm looking forward to. Something that had been happening more often for me in recent years, though if I'd been lucky enough to get tickets last year I would have been buzzing for Elton & Lizzo.

Bold is the usual haha

Coldplay / Dua Lipa / Madonna seems to be the frontrunner - with the first two pretty strong rumours currently

3 quite different acts too - stadium band, massive contemporary popstar and a legend

Dua Lipa, Coldplay and either Pink or Madonna, with folk favouring the latter.

Happy to help

Dua Lipa - 80% likely.

Coldplay - 80% likely.

Madonna - 50% likely.

P!nk - 20% likely.

Approximately.

Ha, after re-reading the comment, I realised you meant that Madonna is the biggest artist that hasn't yet played the Pyramid... I had originally read it as she would be the biggest to have ever played it!

Sorry mate, haha

Actually, I'm glad you brought those artists up. GnR have 6 songs that meet that threshold. Metallica also has 6. The Stones have 5. Springsteen has 3. The Cure have 3. Stevie Wonder has 2. Even The Who have 1. Again, Madonna has 0. Each one of those artists have music that has stood the test of time better than Madonna's music has. It's just a fact.

Of course, streaming numbers aren't the end all be all. But for the point I'm trying to make — that young people don't care about Madonna's music — the evidence is pretty damning. Sure, she sold a lot of records. Sold. They aren't selling anymore. Walk into your local Rough Trade or HMV and you'll see Bowie, Elton, Fleetwood Mac, etc. still on the shelves. You won't see Madonna. There's a reason for that.

Having had a look I can see why you're using 400 million specifically as a barometer. She has a few songs that have hit 300 million streams on Spotify, which is still an awful lot, and certainly doesn't prove this notion that she's some washed up hasbeen who no one under the age of 40 has heard of. Like I said, this is a platform which is way more popular among younger people. She has more streams than a good number of artists who have predominantly younger fanbases. But then like I said Glastonbury attracts a partial older demographic which is reflected in the line-ups. But there will be younger people in the crowd who will be very familiar with her stuff through their parents playing her music growing up.

Pair her up with Dua Lipa who is one of the biggest names in music currently, and Coldplay who are always a huge crowd pleaser, and it's hardly a weak booking.

On a side note Bad Bunny is the second most streamed artist in the world after Drake, with 10+ songs being streamed over a billion times. By your logic he would be a brilliant headliner, one for the ages.

Cheers for the quick summary of rumours.

Dua Lipa is one of the best pop acts in recent years so hoping that one comes true.

Madonna would be an interesting booking. Not really my thing, but would maybe end up there out of curiosity.

Coldplay bore me to tears, but appreciate they are popular. I'd def be somewhere else when they are playing if I'm lucky enough to get tickets. Just hope I don't like the subheadliner, was really excited for Beck a few years back & it was ruined by the fact 90% of the audience clearly weren't in to it & were just waiting for Coldplay.

Apart from being absolutely bollocks, why is there never a clamour for Drake to headline? Now i come to think of it i dont ever remember seeing him on any festival bills. If he's the biggest streaming artist in the world i'd imagine lots of people want to see him live, so why cant he play the Pyramid?

Trying to catch up myself as well, I saw the interview of Emily saying she'd had a call that an American artist was available for next year and 'thank god we kept the slot open'.

I had assumed Rihanna, but I take it if Coldplay, Dua Lipa and Madonna/Pink are the biggest rumours, the assumption is it's one of those two she was talking about?

He's certainly popular enough, but I guess his ability to deliver an entertaining Pyramid headline show is the question. Do the gathered Glastonbury masses really want to hear the torn-faced c**t moaning about his lot for two hours?

Yes basically.

If we're assuming that the info for Coldplay and Dua Lipa is correct (which I am), then logically the 3rd act must be the big American act that Emily mentioned getting a recent phone call about. She did also mention "possibly" two female headliners again so add that as an assumption.

To be fair, in terms of sale, she would be.

The only person to have played the pyramid that has sold more than Madonna is Paul McCartney, and even then you could argue that was the Beatles not McCartney solo.

Reg > Madge also. Nobody else, correct.

That is pretty bonkers. I acknowledge that she’s up in the stratosphere but I probably couldn’t name 10 songs by her and I’m almost 30.
