Roxy Music

I think Roxy not being as good as we’re used to with our legends these days could be forgiven considering we’ve (fingers crossed) got Elton closing one of the nights - the ultimate Sunday Legend type act if he weren’t just too big for it. Perfect year to lower our expectations.

ELO Vs Roxy Music. The one hit wonders that somehow have respect as artists, despite a back catalogue as shallow as Boris Johnson's morality. It's Mr Blue Sky Vs Virginia Plain, both decent songs, but a massive drop off in quality after that.

Nah. Both have got albums well worth exploring. Roxy more so than ELO who're more of a singles band, but the first 4 or 5 Roxy albums are gold. I slapped on Country Life yesterday and it sounded great.

Doesn't mean a packed Pyramid Field going taps aff, of course.

Absolutely. Going to have to cut their cloth accordingly.

I, for one, cannot wait for Snow Patrol to take it in about fifteen years.

If they ever invite them back. Considering how hard the eavii pushed to keep most of 2020, they didnt even seem to give a toss about having Snow Patrol back after their last minute cancellation in 2019. They had the gap and everything this year too.

If Glasto just really sells acts on it being a headline slot but in the day it might sway some. Youve seen how massive the crowds have been for the tea time act so how does that not convince certain artists to take it. And they essentially bill the top 4 like that now on the poster. And if youre a headliner its not a guarantee you pull a big crowd because of the conflicts. Its usually not as bad sunday afternoon barring the tba's if there are any around the time.

And zero charisma in their front men. Fuck me, I'd rather have Robbie Williams.

In all seriousness, after Kylie smashing it, if things were different, George Michael would have been a great choice around now.

I realise you're fishing here, but to describe either act as one hit wonders is astonishingly wrong. It's pretty safe to say that each have had more sustained chart success in the UK than quite a few previous people in the slot, including most recently Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers..

Aside from that, I love the booking simply because it resets expectations somewhat - there was a real danger that it was headed in the direction of being the kitsch pop slot rather than legends slot, to the extent that people were seriously talking about the Spice Girls as being a viable contender.

I wanted (and in some future year, still want) Billy Joel, but this is a fine alternative.

Only in the last couple of years.  And as mentioned, this is more of an ELO level booking and they were below Beck on the poster.

If things were different George Michael would be a headliner rather than the legends spot.

And I think calling either ELO or Roxy Music one-hit-wonders with shallow catalogues is just inaccurate. By a mile.

Roxy Music 10 top ten hits in the 10 years they were active including a no.1 and 2 no.2's.

ELO 15 top ten singles over the same period including a no.1

hardly one hit wonders, don't you ever listen to the radio?, they both get played constantly, maybe not your cup of tea and certainly towards the bland end of the spectrum but to call them one hit wonders is surreal.

Yeah, but they were all rubbish other than each bands' big song.

Obviously, I am employing an unhealthily large dose of hyperbole here, but seriously, do either band have any other good songs? Because I've not heard them and the research is so painful, I'm not going to listen to all of their albums to find one more decent song.

Really, hit me up with their underappreciated back catalogue that I'm missing.

I was on this forum plenty when ELO were playing. And nobody could find me any other good* songs.

* Yes, I've moved the goalposts.

I never said they were any good just that they had lots of hits! In fairness to you both ELO and Roxy were active during my peak record buying days and I never bought records by either of them, at the time they were seen (by me at least) as a bit middle of the road, I was more of a prog rock and then punk fan so they passed me by a bit. Having said that I'm willing to give Roxy Music a shot, I know plenty of the songs and I'm thick skinned enough to overlook Ferry's fox hunting tory supporting dark side. I'm surprised there hasn't been the usual reaction on here to that.

He’s been very open about this for a long time and it isn’t any big secret, so anybody who has any real issue has likely already burned their bridges with it and will simply just not go see them. I don’t think he’s ever gone the way of Morrissey and said some awful unforgivable stuff* - he’s just openly a Tory and that’s about it.

*Will await being proven wrong on that. There was the whole praising Nazi imagery thing in the 00’s, but he quickly apologised and it wasn’t that big of a deal, I don’t think…

I’d probably say ELO are less known outside of their obvious hit tbh.

I’ve been listening to Roxy a bit in the past few days after this was revealed, and I’ve come to the conclusion they are a good band with good material, but i’l probably swerve. Not enough interest to become a mega fan.

The legend slot itself doesn’t have a metric to it like a headliner does. They’ve had Kenny Rogers and Kylie/Diana Ross. They either get someone absolutely massive or someone who will do just fine. Roxy I reckon are one who will do just fine but won’t receive the wigs and choreographed dances we’ve had for the past few years.
