I also continue to be very surprised by how high up festival bills The Libertines appear, when Pete tours these wee English venues and plays the same songs.

I've been to see Ash, The Darkness, and Public Service Broadcasting (supported by She Drew the Gun) in the last week.

 

Trust me when I say that you need to go and see Ash in Avalon. They've still got it.  PSB were amazing, but the visuals really made it. The Darkness are still batshit crazy but tremendously good fun.

Dayglow in Manchester. Class night. Whole set of uptempo indie pop, basically impossible not to be in a good mood. Took the crowd a little while to get into but by end the floor was shaking to the point it nearly tripped me.

I was at the Roundhouse for Avantasia on Monday night and it was probably my favourite gig of theirs yet.

Public Service Broadcasting last night in York.  Few technical issues at start but still a great show. Good support from She Drew the Gun as well

Saw the Inspiral Carpets last night in Coventry. Last saw them in 1991. Really enjoyed it.

 

The HMV Empire is a toilet though.

Mogwai unsurprisingly fabulous at 6 Music tonight, though sadly had to belt two-thirds in - the venue is a pain for non-driver commutes back to Yorkshire. 

 

English Teacher were also very good in support and whipped out Richard Hawley to cover Transmission.

What a blummin gig. I was a bit worried English Teacher would steal the show but Mogwai were something else. 

Excellent crowd, could hear the air con fans at some points it was so quiet. 

Only gripe is the venue - it's all round shite. Same atmosphere as a sports hall, smells of wee, pain to get to/from even when you don't live in Yorkshire. 

9/10, 1 off for venue only.

It's the worst venue in Manchester by far. Aviva Studios should be hosting the 6Music Festival.

 Agree wholeheartedly, to the point I considered emailing the beeb last night. 

 

I reckon the O2 venues must be cheap at the mo - haven't been to a gig at Vic Warehouse or the Academy for years, til this year when I've already been to 2 at the warehouse and one at the academy with another booked. Definitely something going on behind the scenes.

Divorce in Bristol last night (again!).

 

Unbelievably good live show, the lead singer / bassist is a star. Highly highly recommend going to see them if they're near you even if you don't know their stuff. 

 

The support, Dug, were great too so get there early!

They were absolutely phenomenal! Probably my favourite band at the moment. 4th time seeing them and they've taken their live show to a whole new level. Beautifully paced, sublime vocals and the new tracks work so well live. Agree re DUG, lovely stuff and very funny between tracks too

I'm shocked it's not at that venue considering the connections. It's an incredible venue, both the main hall and the theatre that I didn't know was there til we got ushered into it at Doves!

Couple more gigs for me this week and some blasts from the past

 

Northside on Friday night were good and I like the Belgrave Music Hall as a venue. 

 

Pete Wylie as entertaining as ever on Saturday. Musically great and fantastic stories to tell.

Went to ritual union festival in Bristol yesterday.

 

Gurriers absolutely smashed it. The live performance really levels up the album. Every member of band really throwing themselves into it . Would strongly recommend for anyone who likes a bit of idles / heavier fontaines stuff 

 

CVC also really impressed. Hard to describe their sound , possibly kind of 80s smooth rock but some really catchy tunes , great performances and audience was loving it 

 

Billy Nomates headlined and perhaps underwhelmed a bit comparatively as although some great tunes she has a smaller live set up than the two acts above which preceded her. Did seem to be a bit of confusion between guitarist / drummer about set list . Still enjoyed 

 

get down services were fund earlier in the day 

 

a band called orchestra for now looked quite an exciting prospect also. 7 or 8 on stage I think with a early BCNR sound verging towards a bit of black midi . Will keep an eye out for future releases

I was talking about the venue with somebody as we were queuing and I was busy trying to repack my seventy-two layers of jumpers and spare flat cap. (Got to keep that style, no matter the windchill.) Was my first time there, and it sounded better than I expected mix-wise.

 

But it's just so logistically difficult to get to.

Saw Joe Hisaishi with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra last night and it was nothing short of phenomenal. Absolutely breathtaking. I’m most familiar with his Ghibli scores, but his other works were just amazing.

 

Although, the absolute highlight was Merry-Go-Round Of Life played as an encore. How cool would it be, hearing that song coming from the Pyramid stage on Sunday morning?

Thought Divorce were really, really good - can't imagine they will be playing small places for much longer. Set packed in lots and they have some great songs already. Definitely on the up!

 

Dug were great fun - perfect for a support slot. Really great with the crowd. Will get to their own gig next time they are local.

Antony Szmierek on Saturday night in Brighton for us. Really good gig and lovely sound, but some things did occasionally get lost in the mix a bit.  His register is quite low when he's not giving it some volume so his vocals didn't always come through, which is a real shame as his lyrics are great.  Generally the music was spot on, but weirdly the melody line for Angie's Wedding seemed to get completely lost.

 

Really good with the crowd without overdoing it, seemed like he was having a lot of fun.  Great night.
