You realise that mixing is going to happen anyway right?

It will happen in some cases, yes. But this halfway house that the UK governments have tried to run with is nonsense. Either it's worth the risk, or it's not. It's clearly not. The restrictions should remain in place, let the vaccination programme ramp up and hopefully we'll be in a better position in the spring. Be clear in that communication and the mixing will be much less than it will be if they stick on their current course.

As we've seen in the US this nonsense, romanticism of popular holidays is  absolutely crazy in the current circumstances. No one is saying it's not important for friends and families to spend time together, it's fundamental. But it should be based on when it's safe to do so, rather than when we would under normal circumstances

Aye, the rules relaxing it truly mental.

It's like they know what they should be doing but fear the anger by having restrictions in place. They should be showing leadership on this not just saying 'be careful'. It's just one Christmas, I really think they should make the move that I think they know they should be making.

and this woman is a twat.

Not sure what her point is really. I guess without daily news.. presumably incl. all traditional forms of media, plus social media, and interactions with other humans.. you might not know there is a pandemic. OK?

If you have to discard a foundational pillar of contemporary society to create a pointless hypothetical in an attempt justify your own bias, then you've probably not got a watertight argument. Without daily news I wouldn't know who won the US Women's Open, or that Jesy has left Little Mix either.

I'm sure many more of us would have noticed with no lockdown or restrictions...

They absolutely won't. They are spineless cowards hopelessly out of their depth.

The only thing they know is to test policies with focus groups.

Did anyone see the Panorama on the Oxford vaccine? Makes me think an announcement on its approval is imminent, possibly even tomorrow or Wednesday, given the programme's MO was clearly to ease people's fears regarding it.

Ironically, I actually thought it raised more questions than answers, as they kept referring to the low does/standard dose as a mistake, without even asking Andrew Pollard the question as to why the mistake happened, when he, as head of trials, is the man responsible for the error. Clearly it was a mistake, but it made me feel more uneasy about it than before. I 100% would still take the vaccine as still believe it to be safe. The mistake was clearly unfortunate, but there being a mistake in vaccine dosage doesn't therefore mean that it follows that the vaccine isn't safe. I just kept thinking to myself throughout that if I was an anti-vaxxer/reluctant to take it, would this convince me otherwise and the firm answer was no, as the programme would have done nothing to cessate my fears!

As soon as the EMA approve a vaccine! December 29th is the latest, so first ones should be pretty much straight away as soon as it’s given the ok. Vaccination hubs are organised and massive freezer trucks rolled in a few weeks ago to transport it around the country, so we’re ready to go. Care home residents over 65 first in the queue, then on to frontline healthcare staff (and then 12 more levels of priority). Expectations are that the vaccination of vulnerable groups would be complete by the end of April/Early May, and then through the summer and into Autumn it’ll be the rest of us to make sure we’re ok for winter.

Has there been any push back/pressure on the EMA for taking so long to come to a decision? UK, Canada, USA have all approved, are they really going to do something different?

Or is there surprise at how fast the u.k. has pushed through an emergency approval?

Interesting on the Manchester numbers from local leader.

Expect Manchester will be butt hurt about staying in tier 3 but any other decision would be criminal imo. We're in it until mid January now unfortunately.

I really feel for those trying to survive in hospitality. It does seem mad to move into tier 2 when tier 3 looks like it can't keep a lid on it, especially with Christmas coming. Lots of people are really hopeful though.

I'm not going out until spring personally.

It's a funny one, because whilst the mistake has put the regulators in a tough position, it's potentially given us a 30% boost on disease prevention efficacy and (from memory) at least triple the sterilising effect. It's a massive improvement in every way - for the group tested - because of the mistake. So it's quite hard to call that "unfortunate". It's awkward and it looks bad, but it's a wonderful piece of luck.

The tone from the Oxford/AstraZeneca teams in the documentary was definitely that it was unfortunate, given that it has resulted in people questioning the results, and given ammunition for the vaccine sceptics. Whether correctly or incorrectly, it is clearly created enough doubt for the FDA to withhold licensing of the vaccine until the latest US trial is complete.

You could argue its not unfortunate given the fluked results actually showed a higher efficacy, but then again this was only trialled on the under 55s, who are not those in most need of vaccination. Yes, in the other Oxford trials, efficacy hasn't varied by age groups, but given that efficacy in other vaccines has traditionally varied by age groups, this would clearly be a concern.

    • Christ didn't even see that!
    • It does feel very bland. It would certainly spell another year (my third, I think) away from Pyramid headliners for me. That doesn't mean they aren't worthy, though. I don't follow what any of them are up to, as it isn't my thing. Good luck to them.   You would think coming off a fallow year, they would want one big hitter. 'Big hitter' is obviously open to debate, but that was/is Madonna. Let's have it right. The eggs have gone in that basket, and it seems (as far the rumours go) that it's blown up. So now you're left with another plan B/replacement headliner.   I'm still of the opinion that Oasis will do it, before the Oasis thing is all said and done. Probably 2028, if they can come to an agreement. It may transpire that 2027 is bland (or at least to some of us), and 2028 is a bit... wild.   Again, though, none of us categorically know ANY of the headliners, as it stands.
