Scaremongering from some scientists

The scientist in question was actually talking about the effects of the pandemic being felt for 10-15 years so the 1m deaths to COVID are for that total period. The Tweets you’ve shared aren’t a fair account of that article.

Here’s the relevant part just to give the full picture:

“The problem with a pandemic is that it’s not like a tap and you can’t just turn it off,” said Professor Lucy Easthope of Durham University, who advises the Cabinet Office and specialises in disaster response. “When planning for a pandemic it is generally accepted that the effects will last for between ten and 15 years. I don’t think we have been very honest with the public about this. When you are swimming for the shore, it is important to tell people how long the swim is.”

Easthope predicts the ultimate UK death toll could reach a million.

Even that seems a massive exaggeration

The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery today on German television today.
„But we will never get rid of Corona again. In certain situations we will always have to wear masks or wash hands“, so Montgomery, „this includes keeping our distance and re-vaccination“

and about the UK and todays final it seems to be „completely irresponsible to make such loosening with these values and with a halting vaccination campaign“

He wondered how many people would be infected in the evening at the European Championship final at Wembley Stadium. "And I dread it a little."

a complete jerk - what haltering vaccination campaign? - is it the World`s End? his whole comments are completely ridiculous and out of place.

I dont care about washing hands and booster jabs but anyone saying we need to keep social distancing forever can stick it up their bum

He's probably upset we knocked Germany out the world Cup!

It’s not a surprise that PFA shares something that isn’t completely accurate.

Lol was just a joke (he also literally had a go at us hosting the football)

Post shit then try and laugh it off as a jolly jest when it's not well received.

M.O. since about March 2020.

That comment made me laugh 😂

On a serious note though - my assumption, as I've said before, is that any easing over summer is temporary. The lack of honesty over this is worrying because people will be SO angry when it all starts again

Unless Sunak turns the Furlough taps on I can’t see that happening

    • Yep - should have been the Stones.
    • Yeah I do agree on the 2 hour thing. But if they were subbed by Biffy/WA only doing 75 mins or so would be doable.   Only reason I suggested them was because we know they're back doing shows here next year.
    • Its probably the culmination of issues that have been simmering under the surface for a while. Spain ran a regularisation program recently that allows undocumented individuals to obtain temporary legal status and then a route to EU citizenship. 1.2 million applied. At the same time Montenegro is having to close its citizenship via investment program as part of EU ascension talks.    Countries are obviously asking, why are we having to reject investors whilst others can wave anyone in?
    • I'm not sure, they aren't giving any headliner in that format 2hours and Foos would have at least 2. I wouldn't say Reading is likely for them next year either. If they are as said going big on a tour with stadiums and festivals then the UK is once place they can definitely do stadiums and that would rule them out. And that's even if they come back for a second UK stint as I fully expect them in Europe from very early. That could be seen as hyperthetical but there are is some places I cannot see them not doing from history.
