Yeah I think the public will support social distancing through till the Autumn.

Once the majority of people have been vaccinated I think you’re going to be surprised at how quick the public support for this will change.
All previous support for these measures were because there were no vaccines at the time, and it was required in order to save thousands of lives. When that won’t be the case anymore, why would people support it? Just because we are being told to?

Melbourne in another 5 day snap lockdown I see. I’m struggling to see how their approach will work long term when things open back up, as very low percentages of their population will have been infected with Covid.
They’ll have to hope the vaccine take up is incredibly high or they’ll be in on/off lockdowns for years.

Weren’t there movements around Australia making the vaccine compulsory?

Because they're scared of getting COVID.

I think that the majority of the public would understand that these social distancing measures would be in place because we don’t yet know what would happen when more and more get vaccinated plus you have the added element of new variants. I reckon the public would realise we need to go slowly so we don’t risk things going bad again.

I think it'll be pushing it when everyone has had one dose.

The only way will be the fear of variants getting round the vaccine, but there would need to be actual visible consequences for people to comply, and if those consequences exist then they can't justify loosening very much at all.

I've no idea what lit's like where you live but to suggest in the summer people were adhering fully to social distancing is bonkers. 99.9% of people have broken the rules and that will only get more lax with more vaccines

The majority of the public voted tory and wanted brexit. You have way too high an opinion of the English public!

If there’s an effective, thorough and detailed explanation from the government which I’m sure we’ll get then I have no reason to think that the public won’t support those measures.

Are they though? We’re talking by the time over 50s and all those with underlying health conditions have been vaccinated. How many people who fall outside the category are actually ‘scared’ of getting Covid?

Not trying to be funny here, it’s a genuine question. If I were to have a party on 1st June, I would expect that all my friends would attend (obviously not talking about the risk of passing this on to family etc) even though they won’t be vaccinated.

Yeah I think they'll be a percentage of scared people but I dont think it'd be that high. Most people I know won't be following social distancing post jab

I think this statement todays press-conference  courtesy of newspaper Standard from Austrian Health Minister Anschober

shows the way many countries will go for make things like travel or events/festivals in Europe possible again.

Is there a discussion at EU level about the use of the e-vaccination pass or vaccination dates
in connection with freedom of travel?
Anschober: Yes, there is currently a very broad discussion about this, but no decisions have yet beenmade. How vaccination should be used in the context of restoring our freedom was discussed ...
These proofs will be needed when it comes to re-enabling freedoms such as air travel, concert events or football games.

If they decide to go down this route they’ll need to arrange a gathering of over 100,000 people and keep them contained in an area for 5-7 days.

To help spread the infection there should also be limited washing facilities and shared toilets.

The trouble with such a large gathering is how to keep these people entertained. Maybe they could invite some bands to play some music and set up some bars to make sure people are well hydrated.

Sharp, snap lockdowns have proven effective in containing outbreaks over recent weeks in Australia. It’s not much fun but this is the way of it until the vaccinations start in a couple of weeks.

I assume entry to Australia (and flying in general) will be conditional on having been vaccinated within the last 12 months (or however long it’s effective for).

I totally get the point you’re making, but just to give yourself a bit of faith in this country, it’s always worth reminding yourself that technically that’s not the case - the vast majority of the UK voted against the tories.

Lucy Moreton, professional officer for the ISU – the union for borders, immigration and customs staff – told LBC that the e-gates would allow travellers to circumvent the new rules. Absolutely it is completely a way to breach the restrictions,” she said. “There’s a real conflict between keeping people safe by keeping people moving through, not slowing it down, not having them bunch up and mix with one other, and checking everybody. The original instruction was to check 10 per cent, more if you could, and if it’s quiet you can check more, of course you can.

So anyone flying indirectly from a red country could wait until the gates open and then they're in with no hotel quarantine...

Oh and the link on the Government to book for Monday is STILL down (coming up to the 24 hour mark now).

It was always going to be a cock-up but they have really surpassed themselves. They've had almost 1 year to plan for this.

Depends on the time of year. If we chose June as an example I think a lot of people would prefer to be outside although it won’t stop some inside areas being set up in the unlikely event that it rains.

Makes sense - I’m just not used to sensible and effective measures actually being introduced and then executed efficiently!

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
