Tbh I hope Cornwall is put into tier 2 later today, as in a few days time we will be nearly up there with Bristol if cases keep rising at the rate they are.

It just shows me that regional approach doesn’t really work so well ... it delays things yes ... but people seem so keen to avoid restrictions it moves the problem about .... forest of deanne rocketing ... likely as a result of bordering wales .... national lockdowns seem to be the only thing to be working now .... either that or stop people moving about ...

While I respect the sentiment in that, reducing it to just Christmas Day and Boxing Day basically means anyone relying on public transport can't go anywhere as there is usually very limited, if any, services running on those days. But then it you extended it a day either side you'd have absolute carnage at stations.

Looks like the ‘stay at home for Christmas’ message is being ramped up from all angles today - from both a science and political viewpoint.
I actually think this will hit home with quite a lot of people who might now have a last minute change of plans given how prominent the message is. That coupled with the 40k+ cases and 600+ deaths expected today, then hopefully many will be persuaded that it’s just not worth the risk.

I'm beginning to come round to the idea that the Oxford authorisation news won't come until the 28th Dec at the earliest.

As others have said this would be sensible in the grand scheme of things.

But then also minded to agree that our government aren't sensible or rational so we'll probably get it tomorrow...

Do they actually have any control over it ?

I hope you're right. I definitely can't see the government doing any more than they have yesterday, but the numbers are looking scary.

In the past few weeks we have revised our plans down from potentially staying with our in-laws and my partner's sibling for a few days to just the in-laws driving to us for a few hours. We won't be see the sibling now, but they'll be seeing the in-laws on a different day so we are still all in a bubble regardless. So maybe more like us who are doing something but less than they might. And of course plenty who will do nothing. We could still go that way tbh.

Not as such however whoever is in control could in theory help stop a sort of mass "vaccination is coming we can go mental" surge and in turn save lives.

if it starts going up the next few days I see a U-turn on Christmas. pushing your record days in terms of hospital admissions, people in hospitals AND cases and still allowing a relaxation sounds mental to me

Next few weeks are already baked in. Numbers are still going up pretty much everywhere, even though half the country is in Tier 3. And it's not like numbers are coming down in Tier 3 either. Numbers also went up when we should have been seeing the result of a full lockdown. Lockdown isn't working. If it can't make the numbers go down, we won't get a handle on things. All we can do is change the speed at which we end up fucked.

The Christmas relaxations won't help, but should be easily offset by schools being closed and people mostly not being in work. By cancelling Christmas we could probably buy ourselves a few days of numbers dropping a little, the combined effect of lockdown while schools close and people are off work. But we should start to see some improvement for the remaining 9 days the kids are out of school anyway, and the additional days people tend not to work.

But then in January we are back to where we started, we can have another lovely lockdown that doesn't bring numbers down at all.

That's the problem we need to deal with right now. I'd hope that by overindulging with family over Christmas we could then see more lockdown compliance in Jan. As silly as it sounds, lockdown fatigue is a thing. Because I'm struggling to see what the other options are. Short of a full-on, police-state, zero-tolerance lockdown.

Because ultimately all people see to be saying is "Look at the numbers, what we're doing at the moment isn't working. We absolutely need to keep doing it!"

@crazyfool1 I should be able to sit at home and wait for a slot but would probably mean the end of popping in on the way past when I’ve got the munchies.

I'd assume the point of virtual queues is to replace real queues outside the stores - if you don't normally have to queue to go in at that time, I can't imagine you'd need to use the virtual queue system.

I defo can't see it being extended in the same way as it's operating now.

I reckon for the following months they'll wind-down the support levels (as they did from August), or do something like they were planning to do until they decided to extend furlough.

Or wages support will simply come to an end with nothing to replace it.

Have we had anything on the cost of the current furlough scheme? Unemployement has risen a lot, lots of redundancies, which should have bought the costs down somewhat, but I've no clue on how significantly.

yeah, they need to somehow make it more flexible for those using public transport so not everyone is travelling on the same day.

Nope - if there was ever going to be a change to the previously announced rules then it was yesterday, but it’s now quite clear that they are set to stay.

I do now expect senior front benchers to come out daily and hammer home the ‘stay at home’ message - we’ve seen that already this morning with Priti Patel. Would expect Gove, Hancock, Sunak and maybe even Boris to repeat this in the next week.
I think news outlets should begin to make main, headline news of the ever rising figures to show just how bad the situation really is.

Like it or not, it looks like most restrictions will be gone in the spring.

I read something that suggested it hospitalised 1 in 100 young, healthy people who got it. Not sure how accurate that is, but if it's the case then it's not like we can just let it spread without overwhelming the NHS? Not to mention the vulnerable people that will die because not getting treatment as the hospital is full of young people with COVID.

Have any of the front bench, or Johnson himself, actually said 'I will be leading from the front and not seeing anyone at Christmas?' Would be nice if they did, but I've not seen it. (Just realised there is also a joke in this about Johnson not being able to get all of his children into one bubble anyway.)

I know, no matter how many times he tells him it's Camden.

Talking of which, has anyone ever seen Keir in The Good Mixer?

Remember that Conservative document from PMQs yesterday? It doesn’t matter if what you say is the truth etc etc it’s basically a Johnson playbook.

If you go to the cases section of the gov dashboard then scroll down to ‘cases by area (last 7 days)’ that will give you the option to select different regions and give the 7 day specimen average.

thanks, but the data in that is as old as with the map (unless I'm looking at the wrong thing?).

I can’t see Manchester moving down a tier. the rates are higher than Bristol and Bristol is staying at tier 3. And of course moving down a tier plus Christmas gatherings is an incredibly risky strategy.

for my xmas dinner, I'll be going from tier 3 Bristol to tier 2 Surrey - where there's fewer cases in tier 3 Bristol.

Ah yeah sorry it does say for that area:

‘Data shown are cases by specimen date and because these are incomplete for the most recent dates, the period represented is the 7 days ending 5 days before the date when the website was last updated.‘

I think that might be one of the best well rounded data to get as in theory other areas would feed off that?
