so he wasn't ill when he went up? And he just denied having people that could help in childcare- surely his workplace would have helped if he explained the situation but he decided to deal with this issue himself?  Also he was worried he would be needed in downing street so his wife and kid would be alone (and she would be ill), so he decided to leave the area completely even though he was so needed at work?  I may have got confused as was bored.
