Had my weirdest gig experience watching The Fall, he did most of the gig from the bogs having stormed off stage, my parents used to drink in the same pubs as him in Prestwich when they were growing up, he used to sit in the corner nursing half pints for hours not speaking to anyone - which will come as absolutely no surprise to anyone.

I'm no expert but I think there was a period when that was his regular modus operandi. Certainly iys what happened the last time I saw The Fall.  He came back onstage for an encore of Mr Pharmacist but by that point the place had pretty much emptied out.

Vile wife-beating bully.

I think you're probably right about him - I wouldn't have voted him for Prime Minister and probably wouldn't even have enjoyed meeting him down the pub.  But that doesn't stop me from enjoying the originality of the music and the comic, confrontational theatrics.   If a bland, 'nice,' PR-constructed artist was found to be a secret Mark E Smith, I'd despise them for it, but I can't feel the same about a seemingly self-destructive artist who never tried to portray himself as anything other than an unpleasant pub drunk.

Strangely, the dozens of ex band members he "bullied" and the wives he "beat" rarely say anything negative about him, Brix even kept the name Smith after the divorce, she still uses it today. Maybe there was a bit more to the man than you think. You certainly haven't realised how funny Mark could be, I rarely saw a Fall gig where I didn't laugh out loud at something he did or said.

Here's what Brix had to say about him passing,

    • Elastica posted last night teasing a return, wonder where they would play if they reformed?
    • I agree but anyone under Rodrigo would be a sub in reality, that day would sell out in under an hour whoever is subbing, in which case Wolf Alice would make a lot of sense   The more unrealistic part of the scenario at this point is Rodrigo headlining
    • All you can say is...     If he couldn't convince nations that really would've benefitted from the short-term hit of an up-front £50mil payment by this time next year, what hope did he have?   Guess we'll now just have to monitor and see if this could derail Infantino's plans to be re-elected FIFA President next year.
    • Spider-Man: Brand New Day   Highlight was a bloke reacting to the post-credit scene by going "Holy f**k it's Tobey Maguire!" despite the scene having no reference to him at all. Which made my close-to-full screening of the film laugh a lot.   Film was pretty good. It was interesting as much as an exploration of the ramifications of the end of No Way Home and being about isolationism and male loneliness, which I thought it actually did quite well. Though I do ponder if I liked it as much as the other 3 Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. Sadie Sink was good tbf, while I also liked Jon Bernthal as Punisher, enough that I might go watch his Disney+ shows.   Seem to have had a Marvel kick recently having also watched Thunderbolts and Shang-Chi, both of which I thought were pretty good.
    • Wolf Alice won't get headliner for Reading either, they will sub if they play, that is where their level has stopped I feel. Both TFG and Skyvip for the big shows this year was just a stretch too far. Every headliner this year is bigger than them too I'd say.   Agree with Capaldi I don't think Yungblud will be at Reading. I would guess Bludfest 3 or Download.
