The weird and different stuff is still happening. Even this year with all mud, Mavericks was still open Midnight to 3am, rarely full, and had all sorts of weird and wonderful acts, many of whom made the audience part of the show. It seems to me it's the closest to the casino that is on site now. But attracts only a fraction of the people who go to SL.

Maybe folk are just looking in the wrong place.

Where/What  is Mavericks ?

Yeah I had a cracking night there on Friday and saw some crazy stuff in there. These days, I do tend to stick to the Theatre & Circus area at night then just go to a bar, just because it doesn't get so crowded. Did you check out the Illuminaughty Ball on Sensation Seekers this year? Some great cabaret acts on there as well.

We stick to Theatre and Circus, Bella's and the field nearest to gate C (Where the astrolobe is) late at night - had some cracking nights

Nice, there are some cracking bars there too. Mavericks is in the field where Sensation Seekers is. It's the Poetry & Words tent during the day then turns into Mavericks at night.

I've never understood that if the SE corner has the late license on site, why Silver Hayes is where it is.  Move Silver Hayes towards the SE corner, and spread up into Dragon Field, then make what's currently Silver Hayes Camping.  I know there are flaws in this, but Silver Hayes could be so much better.

I'm not professing to know how the licensing works, but if the indoor venues can run later, cant they be moved?

All the costly, unique infrastructure could clearly only have been constructed and assembled as an investment. Or are you really suggesting that they bin it all and build a new one from scratch that we all pay for on the basis that you're 'a bit tired' of it?

Or does the money come from the charitable donations fund, or out of ME's pocket? Or could we just somehow put up with the truly unique experience that has been laid on for us and grin and bear it?

Because it all grew up dynamically. Certainly Trash City and the earlier years of SL, the focus was not at all on it being a late-night dance music area. It was a hodge-podge of microvenues showcasing all sorts of weird stuff, interactive theatre, music and other oddities. It's moved more and more to being an outdoor nightclub, and having Block 9 as a neighbour has just encouraged that (and I wonder if the plan was for it to do the opposite). Likewise The Common goes in a similar direction.

It makes some sense - if the venues on that side of the site can be loud, why have quieter stuff there, when it could be elsewhere? But it's taken a while for that to happen - though the new area next year, the moving of Strummerville, new options in The Park, etc. all help.

As for Mavericks - the concept is basically that all the circus/cabaret performers go along, get drunk, then go on stage to perform. Stuff happens.

Here's Mavericks just before the start of Setlist* on Friday night this year, while most of the site was watching Muse in the rain. Barely looks like Glastonbury.

*Setlist is a comedy show that ran 12-1am before Mavericks proper started up one day this year.

I guess they could be moved, tho a lot of the site is where it is due to evolution, rather than any specific plan.

But also, the main stages go full out for 12-ish hours a day, and so do the late night bits - and they both need the shut-down time in order to be able to go the next day.

I feel I should explain...  

During the day it's the Poetry & Words tent, totally harmless.  At night tbf it's actually hugely entertaining (and it has chairs, bonus!!)  We ended up in there after Chic having bailed on the queue for the SE corner.  They've got all sorts of random acts on, I think we were enticed in by a woman playing the violin while suspended from the ceiling on a ribbon.  Anyway they're all fucking nuts in there, I got on the stage at one point during a game and won a drink (god knows what was in it) but the woman kept trying to give me coke (it's not really my thing...) and I had to physically stop her from putting her finger up my nose, but it was pretty hilarious.  I had THE worst hangover the next morning though...  Nothing to do with the Brothers Bar...  Hence why I firmly think Mavericks is a fucking bad idea!!

2014 lived in Cornish arms after hours but 2015 discovered the delights of T&C... did club fromage this year too, right at the front and it was bloody awesome

You've hit the NAL on the head old son ( excuse the pun) we didn't bother this year except in the day to have a gander but it's the same as Arcadia imo it seems like everytime we go there it's shit music... Great lights  but shit music.... I also think it needs more space but hey ho.

SL was funded by a huge grant from The Arts Council as well as GFL and others.

The Casino first happened in '97. It was a single venue in what is now The Unfairground Field  run by Roy and it was partly a reaction to the trend of the time of going to Glastonbury and dressing like travellers...Para boots, scruffy ex army gear (especially NBC hoodies   )  It was a complete reversal, to get into The Casino you had to look like you were posh and normal, and dress the way many people dressed in real life when they weren't dressing down at Glastonbury,

 Generally speaking the only people who could manage to dress up and comply with the strict dress code were travellers as we had our homes on site with us.

The bouncer was from London and was called Ginge.

And how are they going to get LV back? Wasn't SL required because most of the main LV guys fell out with Eavis/left?

Yep - that was me 

I went in there in 2000 for the first time. Didn't realise it was as old as '97 though - that year I only remember the field being labelled "The Weird Beard Field" as you entered it off the railway track, and there was a 24h cafe sort of down the path a bit and on the left, which also did spirits late at night when elsewhere had all shut.

it needs to change, but I feel it just needs tweaking, the last few years the area has just seemed the same. 2010 I remember it being awesome. then since then nothing major.

 

I loved Lost Vagueness, but that was a different time . I think other areas becoming late night making it less busy would help

Definitely the most overrated thing about Glastonbury, I can see the appeal but it's just too busy and not worth the associated hassle to get in. I think it's a classic example of Glastonbury tickets themselves, the high demand creates even more demand, it's so busy that people just want to get in there because so many other people do.

Can't bear SL at night. Have a wander in the day time but at night it's way too hectic for me. If they made it less venue based, some pubs and bars rather than big stages, kept in all the arty farty stuff, if would help tone it down a bit. Make it a cool place to explore rather than a place to be pressed against someone else's armpit shuffling along and "having a great time" whilst secretly wishing you were somewhere else. Won't be bothering next year
