didn't know anything by James apart from Sit Down so randomly stuck on a song - She's A Star - and from the moment it started it brought memories flooding back of being a young'un. always knew the song but never knew it was by them

bit of a shame that they've revealed it this early on - kind of pissing all over this 'secret opener' thing - but a fantastic booking nonetheless, especially after seeing their name constantly brought up year in year out on this forum

If you know she's a star you'll probably also know tomorrow from around the same time.

yeah stuck this on after and it definitely rings a bell. not familiar with much of the other stuff i've listened to apart from Sit Down, but if i'm up i'll definitely go and check them out. much better booking for this slot than any of the previous three that's for sure! especially as they've been noticeably absent from the festival for so long

Say Something, Destiny and Sometimes are pretty well known too.

Fair comment.  I'd also like to see them when things are in full flow, that Other stage opener crowd has been a sorry affair in the past, the lack of interest and turnout for the Charlatans last year was a bit sad.  At least when Liam and the boys trotted out their nonsense a decent sized crowd had turned out for the disappointment.

That's probably the point of the booking. Whenever I've seen James at festivals they always tend to start out playing to a disinterest crowd, only there because they know one or two songs. And by the end of the set they've always entirely won them around. They are the ideal band for kickstarting that stage!

Aren't James notorious for playing recent stuff and ignoring some classics?

Yes, at their own gigs. And they always ignore 'some' classics because they have loads of them.

A few festival sets from last year:

Bingley:

Tomorrow
Curse Curse
Laid
She's a Star
Johnny Yen
Walk Like You
Out to Get You
Interrogation
Sound
Sit Down

Moving On
Come Home
Sometimes

Kendal Calling:

Sound
Say Something
Sometimes
Come Home
Just Like Fred Astaire
Sit Down
Laid
Getting Away With It (All Messed Up)
Moving On
Seven

Bearded Theory

Sit Down
Curse Curse
Walk Like You
Gone Baby Gone
She's a Star
Ring the Bells
Out to Get You
Interrogation
Just Like Fred Astaire
Johnny Yen
Moving On
Getting Away With It (All Messed Up)
Laid
Come Home
Sometimes

As might be evident from that and three differently structured sets for festival shows over the same summer, they also play the slot and the venue too - they'll know they're opening the festival, they'll know it'll people hungover from the night before who want to get back to having a party. They'll do the business.

(Likewise when playing infront of an audience who have paid fifty quid to see them specifically, with a large portion of the audience having seen them multiple times over the past few decades, they'll dig out obscure old stuff and new stuff you've not heard yet).

The best of james is the best place for early hits really then getting away with it Johnny yen and just like Fred astaire may also make an appearance. Anything else would involve new stuff or random album tracks.

They did Fred Astaire at Manchester last month, it was absolutely magical :)

That is three pretty strong sets.  It does show how many strong songs they have that will get the crowd going.

I wouldn't be surprised if they played "Greenpeace", given it's Glastonbury, and it's worth noting that Larry isn't playing with them on this tour so Adrian Oxaal is back, which might make tracks off Whiplash, Millionaires and Pleased To Meet You more likely. I really hope they don't deny all these people finding James for the first time "Sound" in all its majestic glory. I'm sure they won't.

You might need to view their concert on Betamax a few times before the festival....  !! Agree though... great news.

Well you know, Betamax was the better quality of videotape :) It was the porn industry using VHS which led to that becoming the dominant video. Teletext rules!
