Radiohead touring in 2016

I'm going to give TKOL another go tomorrow. I'm a big fan of Codex but have rarely listened to the album from start to finish since it came out. 

I really just want to be able to tell you all that you can't comprehend its complexity.

I first listened to both The King of Limbs and In Rainbows around the same time and weirdly found it much easier to get into The King of Limbs, spent ages just not really getting all the praise In Rainbows gets until it eventually clicked with me and now it's probably my favourite album of theirs.

Without wishing to start a list, TKOL is definitely up there with on my favourite, and I've been a fan since the mid-90's

Me and the missus are both big fans of In Rainbows. I remember when TKOL came out we were both studying at the time and we had it on the ipod in the background while we worked, neither of us clicked with it and we switched back to listening to In Rainbows fairly quickly. Will give it another go between now and Sunday 7pm and see how I get on.

Make sure to report back Swedge, I'll be interested in your thoughts. I'm going to give it another go as well if I get time.

TKoL is amazing. I think one thing that should appreciated is how hard it is to write non angry/ non sad songs without them being shit. There's really not many about. But TKoL does it perfectly, the last 4 tracks are like a buddhist meditation retreat for fecks sake.  

 

Only real fans can complete the Separator Challenge.

TKOL is not really bad, but mostly underwhelming. It's too short, just 8 tracks with one ('Feral') being a rather pointless instrumental. 'Little By Little' is pretty bad, and 'Magpie' is the one 'lost song' nobody really wanted to come back. 'Codex' feels like every other Radiohead piano ballad ever, but not as good.

It has it's moments - 'Separator' is absolutely excellent, 'Bloom' is quite unique and cool. 'Lotus Flower' is a beautiful song, but I feel the band never quite nailed the arrangement there. 'Give Up the Ghost' is beautiful as well, even though something in the studio version feels off. Almost every song is improved live (only 'Separator' is better on the album), but it's still not quite enough.

It feels underwhelming, too short and not satisfying. Also, I'm dissapointed 'The Daily Mail' never made it to the album (best song from this period IMO), and 'The Present Tense' could have been on there too (premiered live on 2009), hopefully we'll get it this time around.

It may be underwhelming for you but its not to me, its a very beautiful album, one of the best of the decade so far.

The second half of TKOL is incredible.Codex and Seperator are two of my favourite Radiohead songs and are just as good as anything on In Rainbows IMO.  I wouldn't say the album on a whole is one of the best though.

Can't wait until Sunday now, I like Daydreamer on first listen and think it will grow one me, I agree that it should be the album opener - was thinking that while listening to it.

Ps, Feral has one of the best examples of Colin's work. It's an incredible piece of bass that rams right down your neck hole.

You've hit the nail on the head mostly, but I think 'Lotus Flower' is excellent and 'Magpie' is as well.

TKOL - I dismissed it after a couple of listens. I didn't get it. - Chalk it down as a weak one.

Then..

I went to the tour. Admittedly it was my first Radiohead live experience. Loved it.

They all worked live. Especially (possibly due to set placing) "Feral" and "Give up the Ghost".

Revisited the album. It's great. 

I don't listen to it as often as OK Computer, Kid A or HTTT - but it works for me.

Thing is I had to revisit Amnesiac recently too as I hadn't heard that in a while. 

I think this new album will be a cracker. Burn the Witch is the first Radiohead tune which hasn't needed to be heard in context to the album, to get a "WOW" reaction for a while.

with the likes of OK Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows and The Bends (and sometimes the other albums) i often get the sense of 'man i really want to listen to that album in full right now' which is something i don't ever really get with TKOL, and a lot of the times i've listened to it have probably been more out of a sense of duty after going on a Radiohead binge and it being the only one (apart from Pablo Honey, of course) to have not yet been played

new album sounds like it's gonna fall more in line with those previous albums than TKOL so, even though i've heard nothing but great things about the material live, i hope it's whittled down to one or two songs on the tour and more from what came before. if they play 24 songs, 5 new ones, 2 from TKOL, 4 from In Rainbows, 2 from HTTT, 1 from Amnesiac, 4 from Kid A, 3 from OK Computer and 1 from The Bends, 2 oddities. something like that (although they'll probably play far more from the new one as they often tend to do and might even cut The Bends out entirely, but i hope not, 'cause i want Street Spirit)

I liked it on my first listen but with each play it seems to get stuck in my head more.

I'm currently unsure how much it might be linked in with efests, as it's been designed as a separate stand-alone service - but as that standalone service it will always be there for anyone to use.

I'm not promoting it heavily at the moment, firstly because it's still a bit rough round the edges, secondly because it needs a real-world test with a decent number of users on to see how effective it is compared to other page monitors, and thirdly because Glasto has the potential to get upset at me selling it specifically off the back of a potential Glasto resale (tho I have spoken with them about it and there shouldn't be any issues, particularly if I'm not pushing it heavily).
