Did Neil not say 2014 was supposed to be Lorde but her plane was late or something?

she tweeted about not being able to do her scheduled Glastonbury performance because of an family emergency or something similar so yeah, it definitely seems that way (she was apparently also supposed to join Arcade Fire on stage later that day), so i guess that one's not all their fault. she would've been a great way to start things off. it's a shame it didn't happen. The Charlatans though was just baffling, especially as a 'first choice'. hopefully something leaning more towards the Lorde side of things this year than the acts that eventually ended up playing

Bin the slot tbh.

aye, if they can't actually get decent acts to do it (which is baffling considering they were able to get headliner sized acts to play the Park - a nicer more intimate setting, granted, but big bands playing much lower than usual) then they should just rid of it all together

Tbh, this worked out well for me, can live happily without Lorde all up in my Arcade Fire. Nothing against her, but person I'm not so bothered amount being a "special guest" an pulling focus from people I like a lot would've diluted the experience.

yeah can't really imagine what she would've added to the AF set apart from just... being there on stage. i'm sure i would've enjoyed it had it happened, but i'm not bothered that it never materialised. her Other opener set, though, i would've been hugely interested in, so it's a shame that never happened (although getting a bit of a lie in and then going to see The War On Drugs was about as perfect of a Friday morning as i could've hoped for, so i can't be too disappointed)

I don't really see why they do it as a yearly thing, especially when it's acts who could have just played anywhere else on that stage anyway.

Fair enough, do it if you've got an actual reason to. For example, if Foals are headlining R&L this year and really want to play, or if The Libs wanted to play last year but couldn't because of R&L.

Agree with this, thought the charlatans were terrible. It's a great idea if the bookings are right but Frank Turner showed how it should be done on the Saturday lunchtime last year, he was superb.

whoever they book for it should always have good back up as well, the hives and Blondie were great bookings. The cribs less so.

The Cribs were a great booking in that slot. Perfect way to kick off the proper music days (after sitting next to the stage eating a growler while The Charlatans were doing whatever they do). Better than the majority of acts you'd get playing that slot.

And while Blondie were a good booking they were proper naff.

I didn't watch The Charlatans, well, because they are bollocks. The Cribs were my start to that day, and absolutely fantastic they were too, I've liked them for a long time, and that confirmed why

Horses for courses then.

Blondie was a good laugh due to the crowd we were around but you have a point.

Hopefully someone good this year though, Kula Shaker would be taking the piss. Struggling to think of viable bands mind.

Yeah I didn't wanna watch The Charlatans but we were up and had nothing to do until The Cribs so we decided we'd grab a growler (first time I've managed to get one) and eat it there in case it turned out to be some non-Charlatan act. It wasn't. They sounded shit.

Don't think The Charlatans did anything wrong tbh. They seemed on form to me and the setlist was as good as it could have been. I think its the slot itself that kills it. A good 60% of that crowd weren't interested in them and would no doubt have been elsewhere if the other stages were in full swing.

Or just if they were in the programme. Only people who like them would turn up, and not people expecting prince/daft punk etc. I know they tweeted it but that was when people were at the festival already.

I saw charlatans at V with a crowd of actual charlatans fans and it was really good, great atmosphere.

Agree with the general consensus that the Charlatans weren't great, but The Cribs were amazing. Total contrast from the Charlatans lacklustre performance. Also honourable mention to Everything Everything who were a great follow up.

God, Friday last year was absolutely brilliant.

Primal scream this year?

I'd love that but they're way too good for that slot. Smashed it before The Flaming Lips at Victorious fest. Can't think where they could be booked this year after subbing the pyramid not that long ago but they'd be wasted playing there.

They looked pretty wasted on the Pyramid too.

In a waY they're ideal. Very hit and miss. When on form (eg screamedelica set on Other stage) are excellent, but can be very very average (headlining Bingley other year, apparently subbing the Stones in 2013). So people may wander along expecting something half decent and get a lackluster performance as befits the Other stage secret opener.

Although they are not from Yorkshire so are ruled out on the sequence mentioned above. (If stu can have his legends have to be solo acts rule and floorfiller his acts must be at start of tour cycle rule, then I'm having my Manc Yorks Manc Other stage disappointment rule).

The Music next year, to bring the slot to new lows.
