I suppose those looking to ban acts who say things they don’t like would have looked to get the Sex Pistols banned back in the day. If you don’t like a band don’t go see them. Bands often say stupid things on stage and during a performance.

It's interesting you mention the Sex Pistol as a comparison because I think there might be something there.

The Sex Pistols were absolutely, 100%, trying to get banned. They figured that it creating the controversy would help their profile and overall work in their favour. And they were right.

Can't help but wonder if there's something similar going on here. Kneecap have come out with several things recently that would normally be considered inadvisable - but ultimately have meant they've been on the front page of many news sites more often than any other act.

I get the whole double standard thing, but saying things like "Up hamas, up hezbollah" is really not helpful at all to the Palestinian cause, and is just responding to hate with more hate. Just gives the right wing media and pro-Israel groups even more ammunition and power to silence pro-palestinian voices.

Anything that helps justify the right-wing outlets doing things like calling the pro-palestine marches "pro hamas" marches is helping them win the argument imo.

I had a really good conversation with a Jewish guy at the Pyramid last year (maybe you’re on here??). He had a Star of David flag so I decided to approach him for a chat. I wanted to shake his hand because I knew it must be a very difficult and probably scary thing to do, given the number of Palestinian flags on show.

We had a great chat. He told me that he knew people died at Nova festival and felt it was important to show his solidarity for them, which I really respected him for. I told him I’m pro-Palestine but that didn’t mean I was anti-Israel and more importantly, anti-Jew. It was a very proactive conversation that lasted a good 15 mins. We shook hands and wished each other a happy festival.

Glastonbury of all places should be somewhere where everyone feels safe to have these types of conversations.

i see what you're saying, but for them that's the point. yes that draws attention to them and their music, but also brings their cause front and center.  we can disagree or agree on whether it's the correct methodology, but the Palestinian POV hasn't exactly gotten equal airtime from news sites across the globe.

As I mentioned previously, it’s the coordinated manner of this campaign that I find quite disturbing.

The MP clip has surfaced from a gig in 2023 (and let’s not forget Kneecap have played Glasto since then).

The two MPs that I’ve seen so far who are pushing for their removal (and criminal investigations) are David Taylor and Ben Obese-Jecty.

A simple google search shows Ben recently received donations from “Conservative Friends of Israel Ltd” while David has received donations from Gary Lubner, a pro-Israel South African businessman.

As I’ve said, the lads shouldn’t have said what they said but let’s not be gaslit into not seeing what’s actually happening here.

ok...but at same time they said what they said....so people can get all conspiracy theory about it all...but it's what they said that matters.

Personally I am not bothered...it's protest music and what Israel are doing is intolerable and it is understandable that people are angry....but at same time there will be Jewish people at the festival who might be made to feel unsafe with all this, that they might have to avoid that area whilst they're playing, and for that reason I can see they getting pulled.

As I said bands say naughty things on stage all the time. If we were to troll the old concerts of many of the bands at Glastonbury we’d probably find some skeletons. Context however is important and I think we can all understand the context.

Israel and Jews are not interchangeable terms, and in fact it’s quite antisemitic to suggest they are.

just going to use your own comment as a response to that one

As I mentioned, for having the courage to raise it in what felt like a hostile environment to him.

He didn’t support the Israeli government but he had lost someone at Nova festival and he felt it was his duty to fly it for that reason. I respected that and I respected his openness to have a proper conversation about it (with someone who was wearing a kafka)

I’ll also add that, as an Irishman, I find the “Up Hezbollah” particularly disappointing given that in December 2022, Irish solider Sean Rooney was shot and killed by Hezbollah while on peacekeeping duties in Lebanon.

As a fellow Irishman you could also mention the deliberate killing of Cpl Dermot McLaughlin and also understand from our own history the occupied have a right to resist their own oppression.

would be a disgraceful thing for the festival to do, completely against the spirit of the festival in my opinion. I don't think that their set will be cancelled.

there's a lot of things that I will hold my tongue about in the spirit of being civil on a message board, but no matter what your politics are, free speech is something that I value and I believe cancelling their set would be a massive red flag.

plenty of other bands have been on the same side of kneecap politically, and they are vocal about it.  Their sets were not cancelled.  Idles. Fontaines. Bob Vylan, to name but a few. There are 100+ stages at glastonbury; plenty of other stages to be at

They told people to kill their local MPs at their gig fs it’s nothing to do with them being left wing and pro Palestine

First minister John swinney called for them to be removed from the trnsmt lineup. Is he part of this conspiracy too?

No he’s just a buffoon. Is he going to go round every Edinburgh festival event with a notepad to see who’s performing inappropriately.

It’s everything to do with their politics. A few years ago the British army was using a photo of Jeremy Corbyn as target practice? Any idea what happened?

No but if an act told their audience to kill their local MP I imagine he might condemn it. Cause only a moron wouldn’t  condemn such comments

I would like to respond but feel it would be going too far into Israel-Palestine talk rather than focusing on Kneecap.

Appreciated.

If people do want to discuss the wider conflict, as opposed to Kneecap, Kneecap's comments/behaviour, and whether Kneecap should/will play the festival, there is a thread in discussions for that.

Pretty sure the Smiths told their audience to hang the dj. Was there a spike in DJ lynchings in the 80s. Legally artistic performances are treated differently I believe audiences being intelligent enough to distinguish between performance and real life.
