The real arseholes use "so called" instead of "who?".

Although it does tend to get used for stand ups more than musicians.

You always get that one every post about a tv show with a celebrity lineup

'so called celebrties'

'havent heard of any of them!'

etc etc

Like they are expecting King Charles, David Beckham and Leonardo DciCAprio to rock up on the next season of celebrity hunted

Radio and MTV existed 30 years ago, as did things like record libraries and listening stations.

And also a Music press that actually made an effort to review music, ok it wasn’t perfect but at least you kinda knew what you were getting before you actually went out and bought something

Scarier than the haunted house at Universal's HHN!!!

(Not that this was hard... Last time I went was the year they had visible security guards in every room that had an actor, kind of gave the game away and ruined it a lot. 😞 )

Back on topic, we didn't have MTV, as you had to pay for it, but we did have The Box over 30 years ago, which was free... Along with a few other similar music channels catering to various genres. Trouble was, the 'jukebox' format, led to people paying for the same songs every hour.

Oh yeah, and American radio is really sh*t in its current state. My gf was telling me the other day at her office they changed the radio station cause it was getting stale and the new station was playing Sabrina Carpenter every 20 minutes. Thats obnoxious.

Is college radio still remotely a thing in the US?

Yeah but its very regional of course and you would have to either grow up around it or its a station everyone knows so you tune in. KEXP and KCRW are a couple of the notable ones that are like that cause they have had a long history of breaking newer indies acts and do live sessions and such.  iHeart Media has just congolomorized radio here so youre just tapped into all the same  stuff. Other than that you could pay for Sirius Xm and get some interesting stations. Chart manipulation is the whole thing here and you dont get any variety like the uk ones do.

Most folk in my peer group would have had dozens of tapes with copies of the best records in each other's parents, cousins and elderly siblings record collections.  Copies of copies of copies.

Combined with tv and radio, reading the music press for free in the library and using Esso Tiger Tokens to keep you supplied in 'free' C90s you could get a solid wide-ranging musical diet for really not much outlay.

I had one of these beasts. Allowed you to copy LPs onto cassette that were borrowed from pals or the local library who had an extensive rock album  collection. Of course I didn’t do it as it was illegal

Ah the memories! We had a home made version of that, record player into tape deck that could record.

We also had one of these bad boys... one of Alan Sugar's best products.  We used to hire several VHS movies from the video store each week and some or all of them may have been copied! 🙂

Our music centre sat on a stone fireplace with a wooden ledge that ran the length of the room. It had a cut out  bit in the stone front  for the VCR . The height of 70/80s interior design😉😊

In the late 80’s/early 90’s I’d spend ages making mix tapes, including short samples, from my record collection and then use them to “DJ” at house parties in Manchester

I used to get vinyl from a couple of shops round the back of the Arndale. Every now and again you'd find a right gem.

Jean Michelle Jarre- oxygene springs to mind

I mean, always had assumed The Weeknd was riding hard on the money train, so I cannot say it is too much of a surprise.

Among post-millennium American pop stars yet to top, assume it would be Swift or Gaga among the stadium heavyweights that would come next, and that's pretty much because they have previous.

Gun to the head, an ideal trio affixed to my own criteria - one on the up, one at the top, one over the sunset - would have been either The 1975 or Sam Fender / Lady Gaga / Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Maybe Billy Joel in place of the latter if we're having no repeat bookings.

I do think Gaga will have her shot. But I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another decade and she's closer to fifty.

Think she'll be inactive live for a good while. And as many have said, what is the incentive now? She's absolutely mahoosive.

Only comes down the G way again if the trade-off for a lower fee is absolute creative control and possibly a few other caveats.

I know she's got nothing else to gain, but was booked wasn't she and she's just got bigger and bigger, proper worldwide superstar

I'm aware of KEXP tbf given I get recommended live sessions by them a lot. Hot Wax did one fairly recently, for one.

Wonder how much he rued doing so many arena gigs when, in hindisght, he could have just booked far less stadium shows.

He laid it all out when it was even announced about how he would tour and such. Even when I saw him first leg I knew he was coming back and playing Dodger Stadium. Theres no way he wouldnt come through the u.s. again for example. A friend of mine was totally trying to convince me that he wasnt playing another show in LA cause of what he said at their show. Took a little while, but it still happened. And I mean of course he was gonna play all baseball stadiums. Probably just making sure that doing arenas lets you see it in a decently intimate setting compared to a stadium mightve been the choice there. And its timing anyway. Nobody plays an outdoor stadium in January in the u.s.
