I was just using AM as an exampl here because it's the most familiar to me as a fan, plenty of other examples to chose from.Ā

Fair enough. FWIW I’m not a 1975 fan but I watched a lot of their set at TRNSMT a couple of years ago and they were a *lot* better than AM 2023 šŸ˜€Ā

Someone called it the Matt Healy show, with the 1975 in support which was accurate. Very reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys about 10 years ago where Alex turner just strutted about preening himself.

Ā

His fans are calling it ironic/ joking, which I’m sure is great if you’re a massive fan but to Joe Public he looked like a bellend, not surprised people made the move to SE corner early.Ā

Ā

Heaven forbid not everything is pitched at Joe Public's level! That's outrageous!

Ā

Don't worry, Rod is on Sunday teatime.

Just my two pence - thought it was very tight and you could tell the band saw this as the pinnacle of their career which I think is important for a Glastonbury headliner set.Ā

Ā

I've always thought Matty Healy is a prick and this was further reinforced throughout the set. People saying it's a joke but personally don't think in jokes in front of hundreds of thousands of people are funny.

Really busy all the way back to our usual spot to the left of the sound desk. Loved it.

That's a fantastic photo, thanks for sharing!

Ā

I honestly thought the first 3 songs were the best ever start ever to a Glastonbury headline slot & I have been watching Glastonbury for over 30 yearsĀ

Ā

10 mins before showtime.Ā  It filled up a bit more, but not significantly.

Ā

I mean its fine -Ā  they were never going to trouble Elton or Coldplay.Ā  They're too marmite.

Just read the reviews, they speak for themselvesĀ

he didn't make any *offensive* joke yesterday, to be fair. He's got form in that area and if he'd done that I'll think you have a point. But is tongue in cheek calling yourself the worlds best songwriter really that big a deal?Ā

Felt clearly like a winking nudge to Taylor Swift, and if you're actually posting on eFests, chances are you're versed enough to know the story behind it.Ā

Aye, I was hoping he was going to say "you could say I'm a tortured poet" just cause the hardcore swifties would have properly melted down.Ā

It's not so much in jokes, just Matty being witty/self-aware/ironic

A lot of that escapes most casual listeners but you don't need to know his whole history to understand itĀ

Ā

Just to take the 'poet thing ' before Chocolate. Come on, man talks about being the poet of the generation, then plays Chocolate and literally displays the gibberish version of the lyrics on the screens?Ā

It's not rocket science.

Since when has attending gigs & festivals become akin to attending football matches with all the willy waving about attendances!? Ā Seems like there’s lots of Sheffield Wednesday & Leeds fans among these comments. Ā  Ā The main stage field might not have been rammed all the way back, but there was a sizeable crowd, plenty enjoying the set, but it’s a festival & the beauty of that is you can access literally tonnes of other stuff if the music isn’t for you. I don't tend to bother with them myself usually but I guess when people are commenting on headliner crowd size it's in reference to how suitable they were as a headliner.Ā

Again, don't care myself. I was at Elton John and I was at Arcade fire and enjoyed both

So who did have the biggest headliner crowd if the The 1975 were so empty?

I thought the Friday was very weak for headliners this year (if I was there, I’d have seen 2 pyramid headliners for the first time since 2010, but 1975 would not have been one of them 🤣). But I really enjoyed Maribou State last night, and have loved what I’ve caught of Loyle Carner so far. Imagine Four Tet will have drawn a fair few too, though they’ve never quite done it for me.

Ā

Edit: point of my post in relation to the above is that the crowd was probably pretty well spread last night. They’ve always been the best nights in my experienceĀ

I’m not a huge fan by any means, but was pretty impressed with them last night watching from home.
As for Matty - he is what he is.
As mentioned, he wasn’t offensive last night, and whilst it did become all about him, I’d actually rather that than a frontman who just stands thereĀ playing songs like it’s an a record, with zero personality or charisma.Ā

    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious… Ā  Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touchĀ  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environmentĀ  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekendĀ  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to helpĀ
