Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

Multiple, but just wanted to mention Iggy Pop at Bearded Theory. Probably one of the best gigs I've ever seen, and I have seen a lot!

Saw amongst others, Sprints at Dot to Dot yesterday, absolutely smashed the set. One of my favourite shows for a while, great atmosphere and full of energy

Caught em twice last year (annoyingly had to miss them at Glastonbury) fantastic band - deserve their promotion this year.

Don't think I've been on this thread since seeing Springsteen three times (all between four and five stars), Kylie Mingoue (bangers) and Slam Dunk (Electric Callboy are great fun live).

Tyler, the Creator last night at Co-op Live. Only started going to gigs on a regular basis for about 2 years but that was the best I’ve seen to date. Incredible energy from Tyler, the crowd was up for it and the stage show itself was brilliant. The performance of New Magic Wand might be my single favourite live performance I’ve seen to date. Paris Texas outstanding in support too, brilliant energy. Lil Yachty was very entertaining if nothing else, still brought great hype and the crowd responded to it! Drinking a Capri-Sun on stage did amuse me as well. Really hope all three of them get to the G in the near future because they would all be great fun!

Went to see The Swell Season last night (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova) at The Royal Festival Hall. Absolutely stunning! And they were joined by The Webb Sisters (who the last time I had seen was with Leonard Cohen) at the 2008 Festival, just before The Verve.

I was also there at Bearded and saw Iggy which was just incredible. It was just one great seat after another all weekend.

He was phenomenal. The brass section really added to the band, still not over just how good he was.

Was also there and can't say I agree! In order to give off the impression of that raw, relaxed, slouchy Americana sound the band had to be incredibly tight. Thought there were some stunning wall of sound moments. And loved the pitch harmonic / feedback interlude. The set definitely meandered a bit at times though - could've been 30 mins shorter / done without the encore (strange choice of songs). 

 

Thoroughly enjoyed the support act, Trace Mountains. Lovely Springsteen / War on Drugs esque stuff.

Took a chance on a last minuet ticket to Wet Leg last night - Very highly motivated by there choice of support act -  Mary In The Junkyard  - Who were absolutely excellent and im very pleased to say had a great reception.  

 

First thing of note about the crowd were it did not feel like regular concert goers - and its hard to describe how i am saying that it just felt that way, The venue being the Vic Warehouse has probably been complained about enough so il save any repeat info and come up with a positive - I live close to it and the toilets on the balcony are actually really nice - (though only one of the taps worked) 

 

First Surprise was Catch These Fists - which people went wild for i thought it had maybe missed its mark a bit but seeing it live maybe suggests thats not the case.  A relatively calm reception to Wet Dream that i thought would have been one of there bigger moments was surprising - Most of the new songs seem to be received with a bit of a this is all good but kind of wish you had given us the chance to hear it in advance of the gig.  Angelica, Ur Mum and Too Late Now Three big hitters in towards the end had the crowd going a bit bonkers. Before the inevitable Chaise Lounge which is starting to sound to me like their Mr Brightside and ended on another new one which was a surprising way to do it. 

 

They seem quite intent to push the we are a 5 piece that has come up in interviews a bit, with propper band introductions and the other guys getting involved with talking to the crowd.  

 

They are not my favourite act out there but it was fun - Still can not work out which way they will go -  It could be in 10 years time a kind of "oh yeah remember Wet leg" or they might headline Glastonbury I can not call it.  At this point in time I could easily see them stepping up to arena shows. But i guess we will have to see how the album lands.

Oh good your tickets turned up! Yes agreed. Went with no expectations (son’s choice not mine) but he was a brilliant performer.

pretty much my take from being there. Wasn’t that familiar before but enjoyed it. Thought they were wrapping up after an hr and then suddenly added another 45 mins. 
 

echo comments about Trace Mountain. Definitely adding to the listen more pile.

Very similar to me the other night at the Co-Op in Manchester (great arena) - not really my thing, but my lad absolutely loves him so, Went with the expectation of 'tolerating it' but actually really enjoyed the showmanship of the fella.

Bitter sweet on the Tyler front, as is show in JP was one of the worst I’ve seen at Glastonbury so avoided the tour, despite enjoying the album.

Saw the Lumineers in the Glasgow hydro a few days ago. Excellent gig but sad news that Wesley Shultz announced near the end was the death of his younger brother the previous day. Obviously he had thought long and hard before going ahead with the gig.

Shere Khan - very good as always, in fact i think probably best i have seen them as better sound than usual, sometimes can be a bit distorted.

 

Entebbe - never seen these guys before but they were superb, deffo my favourite sound of the night.

 

i must apologise to the third sound but i can't actually remember who they were - they started off pretty sketchy, sound was awful, really muddy and distorted... but they got it sorted through the night and were actuallly really good.

 

all in all - a great night. just a shame the next one is not until september.

 

but damn am i getting old... i am really paying for it today... stuck at my desk but desparately wishing for my bed...

Saw Supergrass at the Great Estate festival at the weekend, they were fantastic, loved hearing I Should Coco in full and good to see the youngsters in the crowd getting into it. I was concerned that playing a 30 year album in full at a festival might not connect, but it really did, mainly because it’s stuffed full with great songs.

They played a mini best of after which was also marvellous. They should be great on the Pyramid.

Went and saw Kaiser Chiefs 20 Year Employment hometown show at Temple Newsam. Proper 00s indie throwback with Razorlight, The Cribs, The Coral and We Are Scientists supporting. 

 

Was a great day - bands all on top form, weather was superb and as someone who goes to gigs down South for the most part, I always enjoy going up North as the general atmosphere and friendliness is always much better.

Well... Heartworms delivered! 

 

Only minor gripe... The sound mixing made her loud screams sound insane, but was a little too quiet in the more talky verses that you couldn't quite hear the vocals. Reminded me of an action film where the action is ridiculously loud but the talking needs a volume up. Band and Jo Jo though - yeah, fair play. 

 

Definitely one to add to the must sees!

Ani DiFranco tonight at the Albert Hall with Anais Mitchell. Went to free up a clash on Friday night but sod it am going to see her headline the acoustic after that. Absolutely fantastic. Really good band too. Much more country than they were before but with a dollop of funk and soul too.
