I agree that many had said this pre Christmas however the sort of "know it all" attitude is a bit strong considering this prospective lockdown is primarily down to the new variant and it's higher rate of transmission rather than househould mixing...

Yeah, we'll never know whether we would have needed a lockdown without the variant. But it's certainly possible.
We're not just above an acceptable level of cases, we're miles above.

Which backs up the point nicely, if there’s a higher transmissible strain then it makes the decision to allow Christmas mixing even more baffling. This was also mentioned by some of us a few weeks ago too, as I said so predictable.

SAGE really needs to include eFests as part of it’s daily briefing.

I listened to Frankie Boyle on Louis Theroux's podcast the other day. He said that as a reformed alcoholic, for years he has been receiving a steady stream of DMs from men wanting to give up drinking, He said that they completely dried up this year. In his words 'no one is giving up drinking at the moment'!

I'm trying to make the point that I agree plenty were saying there would be a need for another lockdown in January however it appears like you are trying to claim it as some sort of victory when in fact it's coincidental given the lockdown is due to a highly transmissible new strain rather than the household mixing.

You've been saying we'd need a new lockdown far before this new strain strolled in to our lives therefore can it be claimed as predictable when not for the reasons you originally stated?

There is a new strain going round, and we do need another lockdown. Whether the two are linked I'm far less certain than I believe the government would like me to be...

I was doing this..... but like @Homer said, am rethinking this decision now.

I find dry Jan pretty easy. As long as I've got some sort of treat on Sat night to sort of hold my weekend together, it's easy. The problem is, that usually involves going to the theatre or cinema, or something equally mental!

Can we not look at the % of cases of the new variant compared to the old?

There's so many stats out there I wouldn't know if there's one for that or not.

I know this one. Outdoor team sports like football only allowed for children in tier 4. I've seen a few people playing tennis too.

Yep, looks like o18 outdoor team sports were restricted as per point 2.

Tier 4:

People can exercise outdoors or visit some public outdoor places, such as parks, the countryside, public gardens or outdoor sports facilities. They can continue to do unlimited exercise alone, or in a public outdoor place with their household, support bubble, or one other person.

Outdoor sports facilities are allowed to open and can be used by individual households, bubbles or two people from different households. This applies to outdoor sports courts, outdoor gyms, golf courses, outdoor swimming pools, archery/driving/shooting ranges, riding centres and playgrounds.

Organised outdoor sport for under-18s (including those who were under 18 on 31 August 2020) and disabled people is allowed.

Indoor sport is allowed for under-18s for educational purposes or to facilitate childcare that enables parents or carers to work, seek work or take part in education.

Adult sport can't take place indoors under any circumstances, with gyms and swimming pools having to close.

So it’s  full lockdown up here, schools shut., no non essential travel , no mixing , shops shut etc etc. In tandem with a roll out of the vaccine.  I am pretty sure the medical experts have been advising this for some time now but the dithering politicians have been just hoping it would not be required. Sturgeon says it’s race, virus v vaccine. I don’t usually agree with her but I do in this case. The crazy scenes in the pre Xmas shopping and travel have really exacerbated the situation. So it’s shut down January. We must have hope and discipline to make it work. Keep the faith everyone.

No offence to Mel B but I wouldn't really expect her to be playing solo, let alone be in the loop on official cancellation.

That might actually be quite good. Their back catalogue is much better than Kylie's and I gather people enjoyed that.

I also said that as the new strain was more transmissible then Christmas relaxation was even more of a mistake and a January lockdown would be even more likely. So yeah it can be claimed as predictable as it was predicted.

I’m not claiming this as a victory at all, just saying how this was predictable given they should’ve taken firmer action a month ago.

Could be an interesting poll. Glasto 2021 is on but the Spice Girls are headlining the Saturday night pyramid slot.

Would you still go?
