had my first ever old-git flu vaccination yesterday. Arranged an appointment at the docs for 2 hours later, and in & out within 2 minutes.

it's easily do-able, with enough staff on the task and some decent administration.

Had mine Saturday. In and out in literally 2 mins too.

"Have you ever had a flu vaccine before?" "Nope - not eligible for one, cos I'm too YOUNG!!!"

We're going to be further down the queue for the C-19 jab though....

You expect too much of our government..

Nah. It's not really the govt for this, and there's a lot of people with good experience of mass vacs (from the flu jab).

Biggest problem is likely to be vaccine supplies, particularly if the Oxford vac isn't cleared sharpish.

I don’t really get how anybody can knock the government for the vaccine rollout so far? 100k+ in a couple of weeks (rapidly rising day by day), expansion of dedicated centres in many towns and cities. All this whilst not a single vaccine has been administered throughout the majority of the world yet - and still appears to be several weeks away.

Quite rightly knock them for all the failings with everything else this year, but I think a bit of credit is due to them here. Talking of ‘only 25 million’ being vaccinated by the end of 2021 as if this is some form of failure is baffling. We are talking about a virus that wasn’t even recognised in this country just 10 months ago. It’s not just a case of hiring some more NHS staff to vaccine and off you go - the logistics behind the scenes must be highly complex. This has also never been conducted before on this scale, so there is no set blueprint to follow.

Constant negativity must be so draining, I don’t get how some people can live their lives without taking the rays of positivity when they are clearly here. Let’s get behind the rollout and have faith they can deliver as many as possible - without looking for negatives and almost willing on failings.

The reference to the numbers vaccinated made was uniquely in the context of whether sufficient would be done in time for Glastonbury to go ahead, not a judgement about whether that was a good number for a government to achieve.

And actually 100k in a couple of weeks has been conducted many times before (and more) e.g. the flu programmes.

We can't judge the success or otherwise of the vaccination programme when we are only at the very start.

No reason it can't be done (unless there's manufacturing problems). Logistically it's possible. The flu vaccination programme runs for about 6-8 weeks or so and typically hits 15 million, so a bit more complicated having to get two shots, but unlike Ireland where we had to shoehorn new software into our health service, the UK has excellent eHealth records so should  be able to handle this. Interestingly, on the Oxford trial, they didn't see much difference with varying gaps between shots, so there's some flexibility in terms of getting people back in for the boost. So long as supply is ok (and Oxford getting approval is a key part of this and why many are being non-committal at this stage), getting the most vulnerable done by Easter is an achievable goal and aiming for over 50s by Summer isn't beyond the realms of possibility. After that, it'll be open access and on a voluntary basis.

Heard anything about Oxford? Seems to be taking quite a while longer than Pfizer to get authorised

I don’t see constant negativity on here just decent discussion. You can be behind the vaccine rollout and think the achievements in that area are decent but also question the effectivity of the government. It’s a bed they’ve made for themselves. Let’s not start questioning people’s mentality in their life without knowing why they might be feeling that way, it’s not really fair.

But we can judge what has been done so far - 137,000 of the most vulnerable people have had vaccine 1 of 2 administered already, and would expect that to grow considerably by the new year.
Hopefully the vast, vast majority of these will not be killed by the virus should they contract it - and for me I’d rather be celebrating that fantastic news, rather than criticise why we won’t get a full rollout and ‘only’ 25m will get the vaccine by the end of 2021 - and all the reasons why we can’t do better.

This isn’t aimed at anybody in particular on here, just a general observation from the media, comments on social media etc. It just seems so easy to jump on to negative news and how things can be done better, without stopping to recognise any positivity.

Did you go abroad in 2009 by any chance? I didn’t go abroad that year, but not because of swine flu. I can’t remember anyone being advised not to go abroad during a pandemic.

No I didn't, I was in Secondary School. I remember in my area like 2 people were even confirmed to have Swine Flu. Like I said a lot of people can't afford abroad holidays every year. I've been in 2006, 2015 and 2017 (America, Poland and Denmark) and only one of those was for more than a few days.

But that's not the point, it's not whether the government is encouraging it or banning it, because this Tory government will follow the money. - It's about you calling it a necessary part of mental health, which is just so pompous and entitled, I go to festivals most years these days but I've had years out when I can't afford it or I don't manage to secure a glasto ticket, I love festivals as we all do on here. But I'm sure most would agree you can go a year or even two without them for the bigger picture.

If this is you trolling or trying to get a rise out of people, then why? But I doubt it is

It's just more complicated data really, plus it was a few weeks behind Pfizer. Looking at what's in the paper (including the adverse event reporting in the supplementary information), there's enough there to get over the line It's efficacious enough and the safety profile is good (maybe a question mark over the low dose regimen...if it was a drug, since toxicities are frequently dose related, it probably wouldn't be a problem, but with a vaccine, many of the adverse events are related to how it activates the immune system, and since there are small numbers with the low dose, they might have some worries as it's a better immune activator..I don't know, I haven't read anything about this, so it might be no problem, but it's a question I would ask). The regulators were looking for 50%+ efficacy, with the lower confidence interval no lower than 30% (sometimes it's 20%, but for this they asked for 30%). All the subgroups clear this hurdle, so I don't see major difficulties. They have a bit of a dilemma with the dosing snafu, but the data for the <55 that got the LD:SD regimen has such a large effect size, it holds up statistically in terms of efficacy (at least for emergency use, though I don't know how they will view the safety data), so I'd suspect they'll accept it (if not, they could just authorise the full dose and come back to it as few <55 will will get it before Oxford have more data anyway). Emergency use authorisation can take up to 6/7 months under normal circumstances, so across the board everything is moving quickly with this!

I haven’t mentioned anybody in particular at all - it wasn’t aimed at any person, just a general observation taken from a number of areas. We should be championing that hopefully in a couple of month 137,000 (and counting) people should still be alive - whilst that may not have been the case without vaccine.

It blows my mind that nearly the entire world is desperately waiting for a vaccine, but a few hundred yards away at the end of my road there are people having it put in their arms every day.

I've looked back on all the comments and not a soul has complained that 'only' 25m will get the vaccine by the end of 2021

And if you read that LBC piece it's also quite dispassionate. Maybe the headline could be better but they are just reporting what a respected govt body (National Audit Office) has said.

I don't see much negativity on the vaccine rollout, I really don't.

I know you haven’t singled anyone out but my point still stands especially regarding people’s mindsets. I also haven’t seen constant negativity on here just people asking for the figures then discussing them.

As I have said, my comment was not necessarily aimed at anybody on here, but there appears to be a negative told surrounding the whole vaccine rollout before it’s even been given a chance.
My comments were more driven by negative headlines such as the below:

The choice of wording of ‘less than half’ is clearly aimed to show that the rollout won’t be the success that many are expecting. All I’m saying is, why is this not spun as ‘All vulnerable’ will comfortably be vaccinated by Easter, with this being extended to almost half of the population.

Isn’t this solely the NHS stating how many they can realistically achieve by the end of 2021?

I’m fairly sure the government are using multiple vaccination programs, including the armed forces are they not?
