Newbies no longer coming

After months of saying "wait till the line up is out", or "it isn't about the main stages"... I accepted defeat earlier & gave up trying to keep a couple of newbies onboard so there is some tickets back in the pot for the rest of you at least. To be fair I can't blame them really... the line up so far is pretty meh compared to any other year in recent history

The only acts i personally will see this year (so far) are Kamasi Washington & probably Madness for a bit of nostalgia & to be honest if I miss either of them I won't give a shit so it's probably another entire festival spent nowhere near a main stage for me, but I'm used to that - however, explaining it to folk who haven't been before was proving hard. So I gave up & I'm leaving them to not pay their balances without even trying to persuade them (again)

Anyone else having trouble keeping newbies interested?

Quite the opposite actually.  I don't know anyone particularly interested in the Pyramid headliners (though some "wouldn't mind" seeing one or another of them) but the quality of the undercard seems to be getting all sorts coming out of the woodwork.  It's difficult to know what the resale is going to be like.

All my mates would love to go for their first time. They just don't appreciate how hard it is to get a ticket. So if they can't be arsed, neither can I. They can miss out & ask me all day long how it was, as long as I'm there.

Not so much a newbie, but defiantly considering dropping out due to poor lineup and the few acts I do wanna see so far seem to be clashing already.

We have until May to get money back though. Tell your pals?

Think I'm gonna pay my balance and buy more time to see if I wanna go.

Two first timers to Glastonbury here. The headliners are meh but have been to many other festivals I don't see how that would persuade anybody. The under card is one of the best I've seen at any festival so far and the attractions just seem out of this world. The under card is so deep and eclectic. Earth Wind & Fire?? The next time I get to get funky with them in a field with a bunch of people I've never met yet at the same time are close friends will be never again. The largest music festival prior to this I've been to is Bonnaroo and with that said Glastonbury makes it looks silly.

To each their own I suppose! But as for these total Glastonbury newbies we are excited as heck.

Would suggest you ask them whether Glasto is on their Bucket List. If so, they should take their chances now! Loads more acts, adventures, stages, events they are bound to stumble upon while wandering around. They clearly don't realise that tickets are like gold-dust, and there is a damn good reason for that! Why else does it sell out in less than 30 minutes these days?

Horses for courses, innit? Best lineup I can remember seeing. If they're not up for it, fair enough.

I don't really buy into this persuading people to come, cos all it means is you then feel resposonsible for their decision and spend the whole weekend fretting that they're enjoying it enough, to the detriment of your weekend. Their choice, they're adults.

As others have said - if they don't wanna, they don't wanna.... their loss.

Would recommend showing people the full lineup from the last couple of years  - it gives you an idea of what the bill feels like - people will either go WOW or not be that in to it....

My daughter (21) was supposed to be coming for the first time, but her graduation ball is the Tuesday after Glastonbury and she has a lot of other things on her plate at the moment (which should all be sorted by June) so she has decided not to come despite much persuasion from me, her dad and her brother. We were even going to pay for everything! She's studying to be a teacher so this may well be her last opportunity. I'm really sad that she's decided not to come.

It's certainly not her last opportunity, as long as they're holding it, there will always be others :)

As for the OP, you can only do so much, if a thousand other acts don't float their boat and the experience itself, then it sounds like they may hamper your own enjoyment anyway perhaps?

I am over the moon at the headliner's and the rest of the line up so far !

Have not been lucky the last 2 years to get tickets so to have our favourite band  -Coldplay and the chance to see Adele we are well happy !

Personally I'd never try and encourage someone new to attend based on the lineup. All I've ever done is tried to describe everything else that goes on around the place, the atmosphere, the randomness, the unpredictability and all the other beautiful sights and sounds that come with the festival. The more times I've attended, the more I've come to my own personal conclusion that the actual music is secondary

When I went to reading in 2008 I had almost ZERO interest in anyone on the line up. (There were some legendary bands on it too.. just not my bag).

My mates were all going though so I went for the experience and with an open mind and had a brilliant time.

I am in the minority I think as it isn't for me. The music is important. The fact there is everything on appeals as well. I can watch someone play an acoustic set, a pop act, a techno dj or whatever. I have had definite plans ripped up due to finding something out of the blue, but a lot of my time is spent watching acts.

One of our group saw about 6 last year. Otherwise he was just mooching around. I saw a lot. Most of which were unplanned. So the line up doesn't matter as I will find something.....

Which might be exactly what you mean actually!

Yes, I agree with most of the points made on here about how much else there is, and that it's not all about the music - however surely this is pretty searching question? Seriously - What genre of music isn't covered? What on earth were they expecting? I think there must be an awful lot of Country & Western or Opera fans around these days. Suspect some folk just like to look for the negative in things, and are always looking to knock something wonderful. I believe it's nothing more than very subtle trolling. If they genuinely did have the capability to buy tickets, I feel a bit sorry for them - they're missing a lot more than the extensive and eclectic mix of music on the poster.

I haven't been to Glasto since 2003, during my absence I have been to the other 'majors'  Bestival, V Festival (x2), Leeds (x2), Oxygen (x2), Latitude and IOW X2. I can say that none of these festivals come close to Glastonbury!! Whilst there have been some pretty good line ups at these festivals over the years, the fact remains you are pretty much hanging around until about 7pm when the larger acts come on with a choice of around 3 or 4 decent stages at best.  There isn't much else to do during the day and the late night areas do not even come close.

Unless Glasto has changed significantly in the past 13 years, and it sounds to me like it has got bigger and even better, the joy of Glasto has always been its atmosphere and then the diversification on offer- the line up is almost like an added bonus. I've never spoken to anyone who has been to a variety of festivals who hasn't said that Glasto is the best by far.

As it happens, I think the line up is shaping up nicely although I don't fancy the headliners either. in 2003 (Radiohead!) I saw all of the headliners so view this year as an opportunity to explore away from the pyramid. I'm going to be like a kid in sweet shop, sooo excited to be coming home!

i'm the same ive 4 newbies with me having only been once myself,

1 ( is sold by Carl Cox and everything else ive described that doesnt come under act,its his 1st camping festival)

the other is my long term festival buddy who flirted with pulling out but got told he wasn't allowed.

the other 2 are real shockers that they're still going, they were engaged when buying tickets and aren't anymore.

funny i had another dream last night about Glastonbury (becoming a nightly thing) and there was still tickets on the gate!

I personally think its better than last year, but I wasnt blown away. Tame Impala, Animal Collective, AIR, Iggy Pop, Kendrick Lamar. Any of these would have improved it exponentially for me.

Dont get me wrong, im satisfied theres more than enough there to get me excited, however if Sigur Ros and LCD clash, it will go a long way to changing my initial opinion on the line up. As would the inclusion of Radiohead... but in the complete opposite direction.

Having got a golden ticket in October I couldn't contemplate giving it up even if the lineup was wall to wall rubbish.

for me there is probably only 5 or 6 must see acts on the poster but there's so much other music to discover, I'm looking forward to seeing people I've never heard of or only vaguely know. If nothing else it's a week of escapism away from the daily grind.

I hadn't  realised how many people are prepared to suffer T day only to put their tickets back in the pot, certainly makes me minded to try on resale day in the future if unsuccessful in October, I've always lined up something else in the past.
