My daughter (21) was supposed to be coming for the first time, but her graduation ball is the Tuesday after Glastonbury and she has a lot of other things on her plate at the moment (which should all be sorted by June) so she has decided not to come despite much persuasion from me, her dad and her brother. We were even going to pay for everything! She's studying to be a teacher so this may well be her last opportunity. I'm really sad that she's decided not to come.

Now, I wouldn't want you to put pressure on your daughter, but.... a teaching job made me miss a decade of Glastonburies

But, you know, no pressure...

I do worry that I can be over-evangelical about Glastonbury - it's not for everyone. Part of me would love my other half to go, but I know there'd be too much she'd hate. I don't think we need to get too defensive here...

We had one newbie pull out as he doesn't want to miss a potential England football match. I'm not bothered as I don't think he would 'get' the festival anyway. Replaced (resales permitting) with my girlfriends friend who I think will add a lot more to the group so it's worked out nicely for us. Our group is extending from 6 to 12 this year including my brother so I'm really excited. Last year my girlfriend and I were away from the group a lot due to different music tastes but there are more people coming with similar tastes this year.

Our newbie dropped out, and two others out of our group of six have decided not to come. So that's three tickets we've got going back in the pot.

for me, the line up is quite underwhelming (so far), although there are still bands I want to see. Just nothing that makes me super excited. It's a shame, but it's not the end of the world as I could go and not see a band all weekend and still have an amazing time!

This will be my first time and although I've seen hundreds of live bands I've never done a festival don't know why money time kids etc plus my better half not as into music as me. Last few years we've watched glastonbury and I've always said it looks great . This year I just said f it let's go and amazingly we got tickets . Loads of people I know say you'll love it others say it may kill you physically.  I  just said let's give it a go if we luv it we will wonder why we never went if it's not for us it's an experience. I think line up has plenty of interest .

Nearly didn't pay mine a few times last year as a newbie. I bought the ticket on the back of a messy breakup when I wasn't really thinking straight. I had a few doubts in balance week as it seems so much money. In the end the fact that my ex loved foo fighters and always told me I wouldn't cope despite me wanting to go for a few years sealed the deal. So basically I went out of spite

I was so worried I'd hate it and I do think I wouldn't enjoy the arena type festivals. In the end it was the best 5 days of my life and none of my highlights were things I expected. This year I paid my balance as soon as I got to work last Friday. Already worried about October....

I remember some research a few years ago from the Association of Festival Organisers into competition for music festivals.  Most people had assumed that the main competition came from other festivals (Do we go to Glastonbury or Reading or V etc?)

What they discovered was that the main competition was cheap foreign package holidays.  Do we spend a week in a possibly muddy field or do we opt for a week on the beach in the sun?

For most people Glastonbury will cost the best part of £500 (ticket, travel, food, booze etc.)  And that can buy a reasonable package holiday.

So we need to remember that newbies, who may not be particularly into festivalling or camping, will be measuring their decision against all sorts of other considerations.

For me it's a no brainer but that's because I 'got Glastonbury' many, many years ago.  I care not one jot about the line up because I know there will always be plenty to do and see.  But I wouldn't want to drag a reluctant participant along on the off chance.  I'd rather the precious tickets went to those who really will appreciate what's on offer.

Totally agree with that as u say it's about how much you have to spend and what on . Think that's y it's taken me this long to go.

for me the line up this year hasn't had got many acts that I already knew about that I wanted to see, Adele, John Grant and Of monsters and men were pretty much my only must see's

since the line up came out I've discovered quite a few more that I can't wait to see, namely Beck, Grimes, Earth Wind and Fire and NAO

I think there's such a variety of stuff on that there will be plenty you'll love you just need to invest some time and find what you like on there

I'm pretty sure she's aware that the festival is on most years. Unfortunately, schools tend to operate most years as well.

There are definitely other teachers there, even if they have to work the Friday and can only join others for the weekend, but as with the OP if she chooses not too that's her prerogative, there are *hushed voice* downsides to going there and you need to want to go enough to put up with them :)

That may be one of the best reasons I've seen for going :D

Excellent that it worked out too.

I think that many of the folk who look at the line up these days could look at some posters from way back and wonder who two thirds of the acts were, that's how little the initial poster matters in the end.

There's what, another 970 acts to be announced?

If people don't want to come then there is little point pressuring them. I think if we are being honest a lot (most?) people go to their first on the strength of the line-up, I know it's pretty hard to explain the atmosphere and all the other things going on to someone who hasn't yet experienced it.

Saying that, the mate i usually go with has pretty niche tastes in music and I managed to convince him to come, he's been back 6 times since!

After months of saying "wait till the line up is out", or "it isn't about the main stages"... I accepted defeat earlier & gave up trying to keep a couple of newbies onboard so there is some tickets back in the pot for the rest of you at least. To be fair I can't blame them really... the line up so far is pretty meh compared to any other year in recent history

The only acts i personally will see this year (so far) are Kamasi Washington & probably Madness for a bit of nostalgia & to be honest if I miss either of them I won't give a shit so it's probably another entire festival spent nowhere near a main stage for me, but I'm used to that - however, explaining it to folk who haven't been before was proving hard. So I gave up & I'm leaving them to not pay their balances without even trying to persuade them (again)

Anyone else having trouble keeping newbies interested?

I know it's 'horses for courses' but I'm finding it increasingly bizarre that people are saying the line up is weak or 'pretty meh'..... I'm genuinely not sure what people are expecting to see on the line-up these days.

For me, I see....

Savages - one of the most intense live bands around, astonishingly good 2nd album to follow the first.

John Grant - some amazing song, really great voice

Hinds - a great spanish 'garage' band, fun and 4 girls having the time of their lives.

Muse / Adele / Coldplay - 3 massive acts (though granted two are repeat bookings and arguably their better days behind them)

Beck - It's Beck....BECK!

PJ Harvey - one of the finest english singer/songwriters of our generation.

Grimes - She's mad as a box of frogs but Claire Boucher is such an innovative artist and Art Angels is her most commercially accessible album yet.....it's a brilliant, brilliant album

Chvrches - OK they've played several times but they always deliver a great big juicy slap of synth pop

Gregory Porter - Jazz. Nice.

Wolf Alice - ok another repeat but still amazing live

I could go on but just the line up 'as is' is already a festival in itself for me.

Out of interest, what acts would you or your 'newbies' have liked to have seen on the line-up? What would have changed the 'meh' to 'fuck yeah'?

In fact I'll be seeing the ex this weekend at a mutual friends engagement party. I'll be making sure to mention Muse, ELO, ZZ top etc.

In the same way you might just see a band that you love or will become huge in the next few years. Chainska Brassika was a great discovery for me on Williams Green bandstand on the  Thursday.

Newbie going this year and the lineup means absolutely nothing in terms of wanting to go or not, the experience of it all is the big attraction. Its reputation alone is enough for us to want to go and I have tried for years. Granted im not bothered about coldplay these days but their old stuff was decent (first 2 albums possibly the 3rd) however i still live in hope that i get to see the roses play the pyramid stage. Im seeing them in manchester the weekend before though so that is the start of a f*cking fantastic week for me! Bring it on!

Just to chuck my two pence in here....

I'm a newbie and got a ticket back in October luckily. The whole reason for me going is for the experience. Admittedly music is part of it but from stories etc Glastonbury has a much more rounded experience in terms of lots of other randomness. I have been to download and Leeds before and other than the music there is really nothing else to do...

mine person has dropped out but that's just because she doesn't want to spend a week camping. I just think it's their loss. Roll on June!

we have a system with in our bunch ...we got 40 odd tickets and still need about 10 i think in resale ..i know about 6 of our lot have pulled out and because of that next year they will be at the bottom of the list or just fucked off the list forever ..the thing is there are 10 people that really want to go and cant so i get really pissed off when people get there ticket and then throw it back in the pot cos they dont like the line up ..agggggg....[ it different if they have reasons to not go ]

imo the deposit system should be changed and you should lose at least half your dosh and as im always harping on about the reopening of the reg should not happen .

im glad to see your still going old son but as for your newbies take loads of pics and phone them EVERY day at different times to show what there missing......really pisses me off but fair play for trying ..

end of rant back to work bye
