I would think that each act only became available after the big slots had been filled. For instance, Wolf Alice were apparently doing just some European festivals to try out some new material but I guess when sorting out their next summer's activities they get thrown a request for a secret set at Reading where they can continue debuting new material. Guess that's why the secret sets tend to be acts that are just about to go into an album tour.
pepesilvia
Well, that Queens of the Stone Age secret set was absolutely outstanding for me.

Definitely a better way of trialing new material but a bit odd they didn't think of it in the first place

They've really pulled it out of the bag with the secret sets this year. Both QOTSA and Wolf Alice were bloody brilliant!
BeddingatReading
I don't know if I'm just getting old or what - I think the crowds are really lively and do make t enjoyable but I just can't get on board with the moshing to bands who just aren't Moshy music! I've seen people mosh to the likes of Sundara Karma and Two Door Cinema Club, and it's not just one or two pits you literally can't escape them if you're in front of the second barrier. That's always been the case at Reading, at least during my time. Flume, The 1975, CHVRCHES ... I usually just move to a different spot in the crowd if its a problem. Ketamine plays a part too I imagine.
Andre91
Two Door Cinema Club pulled an absolutely ridiculous crowd at Leeds earlier. They're going to headline one day, aren't they...

The pits at Architects yesterday were awful. Full of teenagers gently barging each other. Seeing them at Download would be a whole other experience. dentalplan
Yeah I think it's just a lack of competition during their time slot. When they played against RHCP their crowd was reportedly much more modest. Btw Wolf Alice have confirmed they're doing Leeds n' all.
the wonderwhy
Fair play to them for putting on the secret sets at both sites. Good effort from Queens n all. EDIT: I've got no idea how that tweet got there but it's staying. Edited August 26, 2017 by MattDavies__

dentalplan
I think about 40 bands that have played R+L this weekend have been described in the media as "future headliners" because of it.

If I was in a band which played R&L this year and didn't get called a "future headliner" by the media, I'd be really worried for my career. JSmurphy
Yeah I thought the same. Drake has to be the most appropriate, bonafide headline-sized act yet to headline R&L? It's the perfect match for the current demographic of attendees. Stick Brand New opposite him in NME and it's all good.
