Kanye West

Thank Christ none of the big rock bands have ever resorted to juvenile, sexist lyrics going back - via calypso, blues and jazz - to the dawn of recorded sound, eh? EH? EH?

We may get the stadium rock version next year if rumours of AC/DC playing Slane a week before Glasto are true!

And yeah Id be hoping for Big Balls!

Wind yer neck in Quinn. Public Enemy at their peak trounce Kanye West in rhythm, flow, content, delivery. I saw Rakim a few years back in Dublin and the difference with his stuff and Kanye's is stark. His tunes just aren't that great to me. Has fark all (frankly) to do with usual rockist tropes. I fucking adore hiphop - love it mate - but this was dull to my ears. The visuals, staging etc I could care less about. His music just doesn't light me up.

You've totally missed my point there, sorry hon.

He didn't win any new fans but I think that was kind of the point. What's a god to a non-believer? If you weren't interested him in the first place then he wasn't going to win you over no matter what he did. So he pitched himself to those who actually wanted to see him, and given the reaction from this forum it seems that those who went to see him knowing his shit, it worked.

nah, I'm a huge fan, seen him multiple times before and spent the run up to the festival boasting about how good he was going to be.

I knew his shit and it was such a let down

We all make mistakes. Who was it you missed?

You thought there was a possibility the killers might be good though. That's a bit different from getting your timings wrong.

Absolutely staggering stuff.

Though in fairness they were ace in the tent in 2004.

Kanye delivered. I don't know what the beef is? He played 2 hours worth of fantastic songs, the staging looked spectacular and he went flying over the crowd for 10 minutes. It was awesome.

Way more hits than your average Glastonbury headliner.

That was my 7th time seeing him and I think it was the worst. I loved it but at the same time there's something I can't quite put my finger on as to why I don't think it was that special. The word I find best to describe it is scrappy. I think there was a lot of technical issues which didn't help and the vocals were way off, he couldn't keep up hence why I think he kept asking Mike Dean to slow it down. Had a great time I was just expecting more. It's a shame cause he had so much to prove and sadly didn't quite pull it off.

I'm curious. What was your point then?

That 90% of the people banging on about Kanye being an arrogant muffin as a "reason" for him not to headline will hypocritically lap up any Oasis/Kasabian/ACDC/GnR etc booking next year.

That he's a patronising ill informed berk?

I think Axel Rose is lumped in with Kanye in the "being a prick" stakes by most to be honest.

Being an arrogant twat made Kanye successful. That's why he SHOULD have played, not the opposite.

90% of 0? Are we just reliving the greatest hits of narrow-minded people embarrassing themselves by getting upset over Kanye's booking to take our minds off the show now? :P

I don't consider myself particularly in touch with what "the kids" listen to but I'm watching it now and the only bits I recognise are the samples. I can honestly say I've never heard 90% of this before in my life. Quite astounded by how much the crowd know though.

As with any niche genre and acts, people into it, know a lot of it. For glastonbury Kanye West is a niche act. The same as Metallica. Im pretty sure quite a few will have said the same thing 12 months ago.

That's the thing though, yeah, there's loads of music I don't encounter. I feel exactly the same way about Kanye, but then I felt the same way about Metallica last year, I literally only knew the cover version they played. Mind, put a gun to my head and I couldn't hum an Arcade Fire song to save my life either. But that's not a bad thing, there should be music I haven't got a fucking clue about, it's a wonderful thing. And the fact that these acts can headline the Pyramid without me knowing anything about them? I bloody love that idea.

I totally agree, just find it bizarre to suggest he has a lot more "hits" than the average Glastonbury headliner.

I'm actually enjoying it. Given my time again I'd still pick Suede or PSB over him but the hysteria over how apparently bad it was seems somewhat unfounded.

I haven't got to BoRhap yet mind...

Quinn you've lost me with that retort above. The usual rockist (despise that shit) dogma doesn't apply to me here. His stuff is weak in comparison *to other hiphop*. That's that basement floor of the debate for me. You cheapen things if you start with the Oasis and ACDC thang.

I put a huge fucking rant about Kanye on here about 3 years ago. Something I'd prolly be morto to read now but people seemed to like at the time. The guts of it was that celebrity has fuelled the lads career. Not that there's anything wrong with that - but to bring this back to earth I reckon Kendrick makes a better fist of it when he gets his chance. Better MC. Better tunes.
