Following up one of the most lauded albums of this century with an industrial hip hop album called Yeezus, with samples of prog, 60's pop and soul, dancehall and Bollywood, and a song called "I Am A God (featuring God)", announced via projection onto buildings. Were they all doing that way back?

Nailed it. Similarly with the rockstar comment a page back.

I would take Kanye as the biggest rockstar in the world over someone like Alex Turner any day. I am curious who the detractors would label?

I do think the new Kanye album should be renamed again to "Real Music with Guitars" so he can come back and play real music with guitars in full (only for it to be Yeezus with all the samples swapped for "reeeeeeal music")

I can't recall an act ever introducing a track to the world through projections on buildings in huge cities, can you?

So hes revolutionary and edgy because he chucks a load of money into his promotion? U2 take over New York with every album release and they're the safest big band on the planet.

Lyrically, theres nothing different in his music to Ice Cube and McRens lyrics over 25 years ago. They sampled some great music too.

People enjoyed him, great. But to hold him high as some sort of Hendrix esque musical revolutionary is nuts.

I was gutted Big Sean didn't show. Just for the fact I'd have won money and a lot of others would have too.

"Not only did I not get the chance to spit it, Ye told me I could try the resale for a ticket" - Big Sean.

Apparently Kanye asked him but he said he had "a million trillion things that he'd rather fucking do". Bit rude if you ask me ;)

I have to say I agree with this.

I enjoyed the gig, but to suggest it or he is anything out of the ordinary is barmy.

Turns out even his lightshow has been done before.

Looked pretty similar to Queen's infamous "pizza oven" rig to me...

i think these days you'd be very hard pressed to do any kind of stage show that isn't taking influence from another. there's only so many ways you can arrange lights and some people on stage, so unless you're going to go TOTALLY out there or chuck a ridiculous amount of money at it,  chances are it's been done. i don't think Kanye's stage show was anything special really - i thought he was gonna do more - but it definitely shouldn't be held against him that it shows similarities to previous acts stage shows

This is getting twisted all over the place now. I argued he was the biggest rockstar in the world at the moment because he's at the forefront of many of the 'rockstar' qualities I could think of, and now it's turned into that show putting him alongside Hendrix in innovation?

I didn't enjoy the show that much (it was OK) but I'll stand up for his artistry happily. Nobody is comparing him to those who broke the most ground fifty years ago (other than Tony of course) but for today's mainstream he's pretty out there.

Read Lou Reed's Yeezus review.

marrying kim kardashian seems to have made him even more famous, has probably benefited him more than it has her...

This is the thing he's a massive celebrity yes, and as such this all adds to that - but rockstar?

Grohl is owning that currently I believe. Compete with his Throne

Ps. Cheers ghandi, old skool

That's excellent to be fair.

Good but my favourite promotion was...

Gatecrasher was around the corner from Niche in Sheffield. In about 2003 I was in the queue for crasher. From around the corner came two hearse with mourners, a coffin in each. The flowers had "GATECRASHER" in one and "TRANCE" in another. They walked past the queue. Following that people came back with flyers for niche.

The queue full of trance heads didn't enjoy it. Other than our group who loved it. Still to this day the best promotion I've seen and possibly ever will.

When in a band together, Grohl is Homme's drummer.

    • Generally shorter too, I imagine. 🙂
    • Will that work for arenas with seats? People will have their tickets on their phones and needs to find their seat.
    • Excellent new release from overpass today - well worth checking out.
    • Having lived here for 2 and a half years now my take is that security, safety and organisation are just not a priority in Spain. It's not even exclusive to festivals. It's a part of everything.   Simple example. I'm Irish and in Ireland if you assemble a construction site you have to adhere to a lot of regulations about cordoning off the site so nobody can enter and get injured. Here, you're walking down the foot path and suddenly without any warning you're in a construction site. If not, you'll suddenly find yourself directed onto the road to get around the construction.   Life is more laid back here in general. Pros and cons.
