are they together all the time, or just for this gig?

Not sure to be honest, this is the first time however I've ever seen Kanye directly talk / refer to 'mike' at a gig though.. So maybe it isn't all the time

The only two times I remember actually noticing mistakes during the gig itself were that prat Lee Nelson ruining Black Skinhead and whatever happened during Hold My Liquor.

At the time I assumed he'd played the snippet of the Touch the Sky intro as a sort of tease before the cherry picker reveal, I didn't hear anything about Mike from where I was in the crowd. Same with Gold Digger, I assumed it was all part of the show. I still do, to an extent.

If I have to play a film back frame by frame to spot the continuity errors, they don't really bother me to be honest.

Mike Dean is one of Kanye's co-producers and performs guitar, keyboards and beats as part of his backing band on the most recent Kanye tour(s).

he's at the back left of the stage on the riser during the Glastonbury gig.

e: he's at 0:32 in this video:

Everyone expect him to go off on one, so they booed & that made his eventual reappearance on the cherry picker even better.

Yeah, his face when he got up there and saw everyone going mental was a picture. He nailed that bit in my opinion. He definitely did the right songs up there too. One of his autotune numbers would have gone down like a lead balloon from there.

Going into it not a massive Kanye fan I can understand why people didn't like it, there was pretty much no crowd engagement, there was a lull of fairly slow autotuned gubbins, the stage and light show was simple and he left out a few tunes, cut short a few others.

On the other hand I've never seen a headliner like it, I felt like the stage managed to bring a huge festival into a small throbbing club gig and then take it back to a massive event , even though I didn't like a few of the songs the crowd around me seemed to know every song word by word and the opening 20 minutes was stunning.

If you were a Yeezy fan it was definitely a treat. If you didn't like Kanye, even if you were open minded it was never going to be the gig for you.

For me I went into it seeing him as a pop act and left it feeling like I'd just seen an artist doing exactly what HE wanted, and I enjoyed it but I didn't love it.

well it certainly makes any comparison with any other act a bit redundant

maybe that's the plan?

I have no issues with him being there, and headlining. It's not that controversial though, he's headlined massive shows before.

For me, it was overblown karaoke. I went to Sadler's Well Opera House to see a Matthew Bourne ballet. The dancing was fantastic, but the music was pre-recorded (to make tickets affordable, I believe) but it was a huge let down for me. Musical art (or whatever we want to call it) needs more than singing, or rapping, or whatever on top of a backing track.

just as well he had musicians up there with him playing instruments so, isn't it?

Wonder why plenty of bands can get away with it but a hip-hop act can't....

But that's a whole other discussion.

It's not really, just to put an end to that line remember the backlash to Oasis and U2 - both uncaring, uninvolved and uninvolving mega pyramid headliners who fell flat and got widely panned for it. There's no discrimination happening here.

were there any?

yes, there's even a video of one of them playing posted on the previous page.

the camera catches them multiple times throughout the gig.

the guitar can clearly be heard playing during the Black Skinhead restart.

i'm not really sure how anyone with eyes or ears could think there wasn't musicians up there with him tbh.

to me, there has never been a headline set that could better Rage Against The Machine at Reading 08 - that was just perfect.

Kanye delivered a set that equalled that for me. I thought it was just so good. I can understand the hate towards him, I have the same sort of distaste to other musicians and their music - The Who in my eyes are just drivel. However, I won't ever forget that headline set and when he screams at the start of Stronger "Throw your hands up HIGH", I still get goose bumps! I wish I could go back!

    • We head out in the morning. Couple of nights in New York then up to Boston. Enjoy the games lads and hopefully we get some great football to take our minds off the whole shitshow off the pitch.
    • White Stripes/QotSA at Harewood 2007, Tramlines (and Blue Dot, same weekend) in '23, and Elbow at Jodrell Bank '13.
    • Yeah exactly, the shock moments, group layouts, etc all end up playing out differently once you get into the tournament. However you tweak it, you don't predict shocks.
