Kanye West

And the other 5 songs I mentioned?

Asked a few 'casual fans' what they knew and none knew Paris. Possibly because it's not even on a Kanye solo album.

I love a lot of his stuff but that was a shambles of a performance. I enjoyed it but all the people who had it in for him are probably feeling very smug right now. He did nothing to prove them wrong.

The sound was also the worst I have ever experienced at a gig. Sounds so much better on TV.

p.s. Also, the cherry picker was a total waste of time. He looks terrified of heights on the TV coverage. Appearing on top of the sound desk like he did at The Big Chill was a lot more effective and didn't waste half as much time.

Look, if you don't think that Paris wouldn't be recognised by a large number of the casual fans there, then there's really nothing I can do for you. That song was enormous when it came out. To be honest, next to Gold Digger it's probably the most instantly recognisable song on the whole setlist.

Reading this thread is pretty hilarious. One thing to add though - I've never sought out to listen to any of Kanye's stuff whatsoever, but to say N****s In Paris is not well known is absolutely ludicrous. You couldn't escape it for 2 years, it was like that stupid 'I know you want it' song.

To be fair, Russ is the only casual I've heard from - either on here or at the festival - who said it was great. The diehards enjoyed it, which is kind of inevitable with any act I suppose!

The argument that casual fans aren't able to enjoy an unfamiliar act is total rubbish, to be fair. That's the whole point of festivals, acts have been trying to win over casuals who only know a song or two (or less than that!!) for years! Maybe the performance style itself was a bit alienating from what I've heard, not your traditional 'inclusive' festival performance. That's the only explanation I can conceive.

I wouldn't go as far as saying saying Kanye is 'niche', there are about 6/7 of his songs I know including N in Paris, which was a huge hit, but Kanye's audience are peculiar. I've found he is extremely popular around young people who aren't that interested in live music, and not so popular amongst those who are - maybe coincidence but no idea why. Kind of explains Big Chill/Global Gathering, and the Glastonbury performance emphasises this opinion.

Are all your 'casual fans' fairly old? And did you actually go ask several people if they've heard Niggas in Paris just to try and win an internet argument that he didn't play enough hits? Cos I don't believe you.

Just watching it back on TV, the opening was incredible. That c**t Lee Nelson took a bit of the wind out of the sails just as he played his first non-huge-hit and although I'm still enjoying it (both now and at the time, the TV is basically reminding me what I thought at the time) it hasn't yet quite recovered to how good it had been until the moment he came on. Blood on the Leaves sounds so good that if you're not enjoying it you're just clearly not a fan of his last 2 albums. In which case you're unlikely to like much of his set.

To win an internet argument? Are you serious? Trust me, I couldn't give a shit whether anyone agrees with me or not.

Does it get airplay on Radio 1? I don't listen but I would assume not. Therefore it would be easy for it to have slipped by their ears. It was a piss poor setlist but that song is not one i have a problem with.

Actually, Blood on the Leaves is my favourite Kanye song from the 'new era'. Shame it sounded shite where I was and he didn't even play it fully.

He was the artist i was most looking forward to but ended up being the biggest disappointment in what was an amazing festival for me.

Yes, fuckloads. Trust me you're very wrong on this one.

I think in conclusion. He was good, but Mike is getting fired.

Really convinced we weren't at the same set. He couldn't be fucked and messed up constantly. Cutting song short (some ridiculously so) didn't help either.

yet another person saying this.

please provide 5 examples of him messing up.

i'll assume like when i asked on the last page for examples, this will be ignored as people are talking complete bullshit to attempt to justify their dislike for him/his performance.

The more I read this thread, the more it feels like we’re having the same arguments that we had about Gorillaz a few years back.

Those that stayed, patently loved it, and those that didn’t left.

Kanye was always going to be a divisive headliner and this thread is really no shock.

I doubt that either side is going to convince the other that it was good or bad.

I think a lot of people, myself included, went along out of curiosity to see what he was like.

To be honest I didn’t mind the staging, which I thought was minimalist, but atmospheric, nor the music, as I thought there were one or two clever samples sprinkled in.

What I couldn’t get my head round was the constant, what it seemed to me, belittling of women – ‘bitches’ ‘hoes’ the lot of them.

This may be a generational thing, as I’m an oldie, and it was patently obvious it wasn’t offending a lot of the young women stood around me and my group, but I found that quite upsetting in a way I wasn’t expecting.

I’m glad we decided to leave – we had a much better time at the Glade with Public Service Broadcasting.

Overheard people saying a lot of bullshit on Saturday night/Sunday.

Saying "So self indulgent, all he did was talk about Kim Kardashian" , which he mentioned once :L

Also "Then he had the cheek to have a rant about the Queen", pretty sure he said more or less i want you to sing so lound that the Queen would hear you :P

Then hear one absolute dickhead saying "I'm a massive Kanye fan, iv never seen him before and probably wouldnt go to his own concert and i thought it was an absolute joke and the worst thing iv ever seen", then his girlfriend replied "i dont even listen to him and i thought it was the best gig ive seen yet"

Care to comment on anything else I said? Or you just going to get all het up over a disagreement over something that relates to neither of us, since we are both fans. Since you haven't mentioned the other songs i bolded, I assume you agree they weren't exactly hits.

I'll watch the set back eventually to put together a list of all the blunders. I have no immediate desire to do so as it wasn't a good performance even when he was getting it right most of the time. The most spectacularly embarrassing one of course was Hold My Liquor, as well as the whole 'do it like I said in the dressing room' thing.

Are you serious? There were numerous fuck ups which people have mentioned already. Watch it back. It's actually quite comic.

Any headliner who has to talk to 'Mike" so the whole crowd can hear is ridiculously underprepared. As someone said ages ago, if you have to refer to a discussion in a dressing room rather than a proper rehearsal then you ain't taking it seriously.

Were you similarly upset that The Who did a song about w*nking over porno pictures of women?

Fair enough. I don't listen to radio so don't really have a clue. Just based that opinion on the 20/30 somethings who didn't recognise the intro when i played it in the staffroom.

so you can't name 5 so? even though it was constantly happening?

and the false start to touch The Sky was due to a member of his backing band making a mistake, but it's part of the Kanye West performance so might as well include it as i'm sure you'll struggle otherwise.

please name 5 of these numerous fuck-ups.

Mike Dean forgetting things and fucking up isn't really Kanye fucking up, but as I said, we might as well include it as it's part of his performance.

if my manager in work asks me to do something and I forget to do it, it isn't his fuck up, it's mine.

My sincerest apologies for not having been there at the front of the pyramid stage with a notebook writing down every mistake.
