Perfect fit - his sexist and misogynist videos and turgid musical output in the 80s inspired an army of inventive, independent-thinking musicians, and yet by managing to persuade millions of mugs to by his records 20+ years ago and simply staying active he is now revered as a 'legend'. The long-forgotten indie artists who were inspired to make music in order to rally against this sort of shit should be the ones hailed as legends, but this is just another in an increasingly long line of performers who were the antithesis of what creative and challenging independent music was back in the 80s/90s being welcomed by a crowd eager to tick another big name off a list.

• Endless Love (from the Endless Love soundtrack, 1981)
• Dancing on the Ceiling (from Dancing on the Ceiling, 1986)
• Three Times a Lady (from the Commodores Album Natural High, 1978)
• Say You, Say Me (from Dancing on the Ceiling, 1986)
• Hello (from Can't Slow Down, 1983)
• All Night Long (All Night) (from Can't Slow Down, 1983)

Of those, I'd only say 'Dancing.....' and 'All Night Long' are proper singalong, 'good time' songs. I'd find most of the rest a bit of downer. on a sunday afternoon/evening ......legends slot should be the moment you drag your tired, knackered, muddy, dead body into one more night of energy..

Yeah, I'm the same as you, those were the only songs that I'd recognise.

I get pissed off every time Faith No more waste five minutes of their set playing 'Easy' so I can't imagine Lionel making me want to listen to it.

I'll be elsewhere but, saying that, I was unlikely to watch whoever they dug up for the 'legend tea time slot'

I liked the first two or three commodores albums back when they were a funk band. Then, like most funk bands they sold the hell out- yet the more crap they became, the more albums they sold. Life isn't fair.

One of my party is a huge (non-ironic) fan too and was only saying this weekend she hoped he'd play!

Think he's a good Legend slot booking, but I personally can't stand his music - those lyrics are just a monster spewfest :-p But then - according to a former boyfriend - I'm about as romantic as a brick.
