LIONEL RICHIE

Yes, it's entirely possible. Success is no guarantee of quality, much as a lack of success is no guarantee of a lack of quality. And if your next question is along the lines of 'well if someone is good then why wouldn't they be successful?' then you probably need to use your imagination.

Because it's tame, unchallenging, easily-digestible well-publicised fodder for people with little imagination. Actually it looks like you've answered your own question:

Very true, but having an opinion does not instantly make you intolerant or dismissive.

Yes they can.

He has. I'll take a punt that his record sales have been declining over the years.

Millions of record sales do not show otherwise, and what's wrong with having an opinion that something is shit?

Why can't you accept that some people think that Lionel Ritchie is shit? Isn't it possible to have a genuinely negative opinion of his music, or does everyone who dislikes his stuff only have that opinion because they're too busy smelling their own farts (whatever that means)?

I'm not particularly a big Lionel Richie fan, I like the "hits" that's all for me. I do accept that some people will instantly dismiss many types of music as shit, I also choose to argue against it as a piss poor dismissive response which very few people ever bother to back their comments up with (none of this is directed at you personally by the way).

There are a number of people on here who display such abhorrent self righteous attitudes who are actually very insulting towards those that like what they deem as shit. And the way they express their opinion quite often is very dismissive and intolerant of those who do like what they dismiss as shit.

how can it possibly be insulting for someone to say that what you like, they think is shit?

unless you're not sure whether you like it in the first place....

No mate, that's not the insulting part of it, at all. The insulting part is when those people are referred to as idiots, lacking intelligence, unimaginative etc just because they like something you think is shit. It's a massive intolerance to anything music wise other than what you are into.

Why on earth would i want to think somebody is stupid, boring or unimaginative just because they say on here that they like Lionel Richie, Madonna et al? All that demonstrates is that I would be narrow minded and lacking tolerance towards others for something so trivial as their musical tastes!

It's a shame Russy doesn't take this stance.

(Though his arguments can be slightly amusing at times)

I personally like reading russy's posts.

What i don't get is that some people don't seem to have realised what he's like before diving into an argument with him and then showing massive affront at the responses you've received:

"OH MY GOD, he has unswervingly opinionated, arguably misanthropic tendencies that may or may not be made in jest...dare i say it...he's...he's a music snob...ultra-partisan to his own likes. This offends me! Good LORD"

Did you:

a) not read anything he's ever posted - and there's a lot! - before entering a debate?

B) think your passionate counter arguments would have any effect / change his mind?

c) forget the type of forum (and i don't mean forum in the 'internet' sense) this is talking place?

Not taking sides, but i tend to metaphorically try and 'zoom out' of just where exactly we are when posting comments to gain a bit of self-perspective:

"Friends, honorouable members, Mr Speaker, my opinion on this matter is irrefutably correct in that...oh...wait...hang on...i'm on eFests. I'd better chill the fuck out and have a smoke..."

But enough from a fucking thick fuck like me - do carry on...
