beat me to it. they may have a fantastic show (that's what their fans are always spouting in their defence anyway) but that live show is filled with shite songs, and will continue to be so unless they somehow release some magnum opus that has everybody floored (but unfortunately for Kasabian, their 'magnum opus' is and probably will always be their first record. all downhill from there). they'll stand the test of time for as long as they're around, but nobody's gonna look back at musical or Glastonbury history and say 'man, Kasabian really nailed it'

see now this i don't believe. i genuinely think they thought they were pushing the boundaries with their new album. i think they even said so in interviews beforehand, and although i haven't heard the album myself, i'm led to believe it is, for the most part, laughable. their doesn't seem to be any snigger when it comes to their own music - i think they take it all very seriously, even when repeating 'being watched by Google'

I think the acknowledge their music is tongue-in-cheek, but they think that it's also really clever and subversive. With the "We're being watched by Google!", I think they know it sounds dumb to just shout that, so it's a joke, but at the same time.... we are being watched by Google so #madeyouthink

speaking of shite music, what the hell is Florence's new song? just two and a half minutes of nothing. plays out like an album intro (which it probably is) a weird song to re-introduce yourself to the world with (although i realise it's not the first single so doesn't really matter)

As for dismissing a band because of their following, that's snobbery. I've not done that. I've said they attract arseholes to gigs, but that didn't stop me from going to see them and I certainly didn't dismiss them. I don't think many others have dismissed them either due to their fans. They might have said something about their fans though.

Hang on. I wasn't saying you (or anyone just now) had! I just remember in the run up to last year's there was a lot of that thrown about with regards to Kasabian headlining. They do get a lot of that though; people on about LADS and what not rather than disliking them for their music which is understandable.

I think there is a bit of snobbery around here. If there is a band that are relatively young and popular with a lot of the general public and young people (i.e. kasabian, coldplay, arctics) they often get shunned off as boring or

bland.

Anyone who has been around for 20 odd years automatically gets put ahead of them in the pecking order. In 10 years time are these going to be the people everyone is raving about? When AC/DC, Stones etc were young and popular with everyone were people saying they were boring and bland?

Those 3 bands are boring and bland. As are the Killers and a few other headliners. No snobbery about it. I did mention Kylie! To whom you're being a snob about. Snobbery from me would be laughing at Kasabian for being shit while posting clips from Bitches Brew or My Favourite Things.

Or something like that.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of either and wouldn't go see either. I've seen Kasabian a few times and apart from the Other Stage in 05 which I partially enjoyed - when they were very young and popular (so no snobbery there!) - they don't register. I rather watch no one than watch them these days.

And no, people weren't saying the Stones and AC/DC were boring and bland. Because they weren't.

So Swift, Kylie and Coldplay please!

The 'crowd' for Glastonbury can also be said to include a rather sizeable chunk of people sat at home watching on TV - and people got Bob The Builder to number one so they're not to be trusted.

As it happens I have a large group of friends that went to watch Kasabian and said they were amazing at Glastonbury, they have varied tastes in music and I still told tham 'nah, Kasabian are shite' I don't buy into the whole 'but you have to see them live to appreciate them' shtick, I have seen them live and watched them on TV a number of times and them knobbing about on stage doesn't make an act 'great live'

Plenty of acts have headlined the Pyramid that plenty of people would describe as shite - magic of opinions you see - but that has nothing to do with snobbery and everything to do with personal opinion.

I don't mean to be all self-referential, Laurie, but I wrote this to you a couple of pages ago - not that you were in anyway obliged to reply, you understand! Truth is, much hugely popular stuff really isn't very good. Look at the album and single charts over the course of a year. Most people on here probably like VERY little of that, and yet it is the most popular stuff. I regularly have an argument with a mate of mine who insists that if lots of people like it, I can't say it isn't any good. As I say in my repeated post below, the public gets what the public gets (is given...)

Laurie, of course there's a bit of snobbery around here - it's a self-selected group of people on a music festival website, for goodness' sake.

However, to suggest that acts are shunned off as boring or bland because they are young and relatively popular with the general public and young people is incorrect. Bottom line is, mass poularity is very often associated with a lack of complexity - it is 'less challenging', if you will. As such, it will often appeal to those with relatively little exposure to music in all its forms - e.g. 'young people'. A generalisation yes, but I think it's reasonable to say that one's interests become more sophisticated as one gets older - I have seen this in many young people, not least of all my kids and ME!

Add to that the fact that boring and bland tends to be the staple product of mass appeal media outlets (esp. commercial radio) and the public gets what the public gets. Therefore, they end up liking the stuff to which they are exposed. Many people on here spend a lot of time actively exploring new music, rather than having it spoon fed to them. The rise of the popularity in festivals in general, and GF in particular, will attract an increasing proportion of people for whom music happens to them, rather than they pursuing a passion for it. Nothing 'wrong' with that, but you do then end up thinking The Vaccines are ace. And they're not. They're really a bit sh*t, aren't they...?
