Probably biased as they are one of my favourite ever bands, but Rome is right up there with the best live albums for me. Such a great setlist/tracklist - and they really are on their best live form of their career.

Not sure why they insist on playing 'smoke detector' - it's shite! The rest of the album is awesome though.

Disagree - I thought it was a great inclusion in the Alexandra Palace set. I prefer Space Invader of the long songs from Laugh Track but I do like the groove it's got.

 

No About Today is a proper shame with this one though. That's usually got something too it live - I remember seeing it in Milan when I first saw The National 6 years ago and thought it was one of the best songs of the night.

Never been a lover of About Today but hearing it live in 2024 was actually the best it’s ever sounded.

 

+1 for Smoke Detector fan, and Space Invader is definitely better live.

In fact it was my top song on Spotify the year before last. Great live too!

It's almost two different songs given the original version has a lot more of a folksy feel and the Warrior version is a proper big widescreen epic. I think it's the latter that helped me appreciate the former more given I'd been eh on it before seeing the big version in Milan when I first saw The National a few years back.

Love The National, but considering Matt owns up to having no musical talent or knowledge, I really fail to get on board with his solo stuff. Presumably it's just more of his lyrics mapped to soundstracks from friends?
