chic playing vfest as well, not even an exclusive seems very weak. albeit very little crossover between the two festivals.

It's pathetic, I'm still convinced what ever Rob thought he had in the bank fell threw at the last minute. Despite the Bestival forum moderator assuring me Chic were their first choice.

Thankfully the rest of the lineup is looking decent so far.

Was just wondering if anyone knows what the security at Bestival is like in terms of ticket types and id cards? Me and a couple of my friends will all be 17 at the time and are wondering what our best option would be, any help would be appreciated massively

Although I've been over the age of 18 every time I've been, I've never gotten ID'd on the gate or anything. Haven't seen anyone else either

I've had to show my student card each time though (although only because I bought student tickets obviously)

beck being the Thursday headliner is slightly more understandable because it's the supposed 'extra day' and not closing the fest.. still not good though. Chic headlining Sunday is even worse, thankfully the rest of the lineup is fairly strong atm.

I think the point he was making was that Beck would be a better mainstage headliner than Chic, not that Beck is a let down as a headliner.

Oh right, I did word that poorly. What Frankly said. I mean, Beck's a big act, quite a rarity and is being packed away into the Big Top, while Chic and Nile Rodgers have done the rounds so much the past couple of years and aren't really the level of the other headline acts. All of these daft 'special event' headliners should be on the Thursday actually as you could argue the same with M.I.A. and Fatboy Slim last year.

What I think it comes down to it's that Outkast probably cost a bomb, so even if it wasn't Chic, the Sunday headliner would be a disappointment. I mean, Foals??????

Bestival always seems to have at least one headliner who is unarguably smaller and / or cheaper than the others, which is fine by me. Foals will be headlining the likes of Reading and Leeds soon enough. but out of all the smaller / cheaper acts available, they couldn't do better than last years Sunday sub?

whilst Beck might've not been a popular choice with the masses (although his new album did reach 4 in the charts, a career high) he's undeniably got a great back catalogue and puts on a great live show. him being in the Big Top is bollocks and i'm worried i won't even be able to get in

Foals are more than big enough to headline Bestival.

I also doubt OutKast cost more than the Cure, Elton or Stevie. Perhaps on par or slightly under, but certainly not more.

I hate to get into discussions about guessing how much festival headliners cost, because it is always just that - guessing - but:

1. I can't imagine the Cure were all that expensive really. They're based in southeast England, they didn't have a big production, and I can't imagine their demands are in any way outlandish.

2. When Stevie Wonder headlined, the other two headliners were Florence + the Machine and New Order, the latter of whom had recently been playing Academy-sized venues. Both cheap bookings, perhaps on a par with Foals and Chic.

3. When Elton John headlined, the other two headliners were Snoop Dogg (probably reasonably expensive, though not so much so that other festivals are unable to afford him for an early-evening slot) and Fatboy Slim (basically doing Rob a favour).

I'm not saying Chic are the best headliner they could've chosen, but I don't think we could expect anyone significantly bigger. I wonder if Busta Rhymes (a fairly mid-range booking, all things considered) was in fact lined up to headline if OutKast had said no, in which case the big money could've gone on a different big-name headliner, and Chic would be headlining the Big Top one night.

All speculation though, obviously.

    • mmm... i note there are several derogatory comments about this... not sure what it says about me, but i could spend a happy afternoon here...   Simple Minds, Deacon Blue and Texas are all great live bands.   hell, i'd even be drawn away from the bar to see James Blunt (if only for a bit of a nostalgia trip for his show on the Pyramid that i admit i hugely enjoyed).   still, with all that said - there's no way i'm going to the other end of the country for it...   🙂

    • Have a great festival to those that are going, I cant wait to get there tomorrow!
    • ah i get ya.. Yeah I hate festivals that have that barrier and front section. Roskilde is gonna be the same, which I'm not looking forward to navigating. Like you say, you end up missing other stuff having to get there dead early. Luckily there's not much we're arsed about on at Roskilde though so that wont be such an issue! hahaha
    • Not directly my expectation but my wishlist   - car seat headrest (it has been way too long these guys did Europe) - death cab for cutie - new constellations - interpol - bush - swimschool - suede - the haunted youth (should have been there this year) - flipturn   and oh yes Yumi Zouma can come any week, day, hour but this is a personal fetish with this band
