interesting about the gate changes.  I can’t see how they could move Gate B that far due to the permanent stuff around there. I guess Gate C could move up the hill to stop people blocking the road?

Do you mean the festival could potentially move Gate C up into the campervan fields?

Had a small stroll yesterday to look at the Accessibility field and the stage hasn’t moved yet 😀 the fields look amazing.

I’m not sure, was just musing. Perhaps some of it? So the queues for the inward lines are held at the top of the hill, keeping the road clear. Tbh, I’ve supervised on both gates and been team leader on C working with GFL and council monitoring and I can’t see why they’d want to change anything at either, apart from the road way and to make it more difficult for runners!

They’ve purchased more land but not sure where … maybe perimeter might be extended … also just musing by the way

Other than moving further inside the fence (which I can't see happening) I can't see a solution at Gate C. It has become so busy over recent years due to more and more people settling up camp with their friends in live in vehicles and the increase in glamping in the vicinity. Personally I would love to see a reduction in the queue as it often takes well over an hour to re-enter gate C.

Wonder if the gates moving is to bring more staff camping inside the fence, I know quite a few crew have left because they were moved from inside the fence to way outside.

Thing is, there's no corresponding mention of moving the fenceline on that side - and it currently feels very unlikely that they would be able to, as there's a road adjacent to fence that they can't easily enclose. Same reason I can't see either gate being moved further East.

 

Though the above might all change if GFL were able to acquire certain fields on the east side, as I understand it the main blockage on expansion (ie the need to keep the road open) has been the need to maintain access to specific fields that GFL don't control or have an agreement with.

Can't believe they would move it as far back as the road. As you say they can't enclose a road and shutting a road / lane requires other legal structures. I'd say it's one of those planning elements where they 'test the water' to see what they could get away with to allow the flexibility of decision further down the line.

They have no intention of moving any crew back on site, quite the opposite and we’ll lose more extremely experienced and skilled crew as a result

Looks great but what's it made from? How do you guarantee its structural integrity when connected together?

Appreciate the links, thank you.  No way I'll be ready in time for this year's festival season unfortunately, and am aiming for next summer as I'm still working on the final design and build process to be able to make many identical segments that are both serviceable in place and will stand up to the rigours of being an outdoor installation.

 

It's built from polypropylene tube, the prototype in the video is just held together with zip ties to test the electronics, but the actual constructions (which I'm building today, as it happens) are jointed at each corner with thermo welded polypropylene sections and once it's all put together it's a solid equilateral triangle that is very strong structurally.  The intention is to build structures from these (and other shapes) built with the same process.  Once I've finished assembling the first batch I'm going to experiment with attaching translucent sheet to further diffuse the light.

 

For smaller installations they can simply be clamped together (which is all I'm going to be doing for the test builds over the next few weeks) but for larger installations it would be a case of building a structure onto which they are mounted (for example with scaffold or timber depending on size).  I'm building a larger 3 meter pyramid tonight/tomorrow and, as long as I'm happy with results will build enough sections after my next payday to build a 5m diameter dome.

From personal conversations with the Green Fields coordinators, unless things have changed, what is actually happening is that the Craft Field coordinators are being replaced. To the best of my knowledge interviews are currently being conducted to find replacements

We’re reaching out with some significant news. 

 

We founded Greencrafts, forging a space for craft at festivals, a long time ago. We know craft is generative, and it has amazingly positive impact on the human condition. And the connection made between makers, festival publics, natural materials and traditional skill-share is powerful. Many people don’t have a way to engage with craft, and getting hands-on with a maker sharing their skill can be a transformative experience. And it builds support for the work of creatives, makers and traditional methods. It’d never been done way back in 1992, but we wanted to develop a home for craft in mainstream festivals. We believed (and still do) in championing how craft and sustainable living have transformative potential for future generations. And we’ve had loads of feedback affirming this. We’ve reached and connected with a whole new massive audience. And spearheaded for many years craft’s contemporary relevance and uplifting magic at festivals.

 

Festival’s are profit driven structures, and corners can get cut. For a long time now we’ve championed the value of craft, skill-share, public participation, green thinking  and independent creatives; and how much this adds to a festival public’s experience; safely. Sadly though we’re ever mindful that festival managements can cut corners, something we’ve pushed back on for some time. Behind the scenes, festival management structures and people holding power surrounding us, has sadly become ever more scary, making it impossible to continue in a way that aligns with our values. We’ve always pushed back and fought for what we believe in. And we won’t be complicit in knowingly putting people at risk. We won’t support profit over people, over ethics, over welfare, over safety, or over humanity. 

 

Because of this, after 33 years in many fields crossing both sides of the ocean, Greencrafts won’t be a part of festivals anymore, from 2026 onwards.

 

A lot has happened that’s led to this. We haven’t taken this move lightly. And we know how when you raise (safety, moral, other) issues, you can be cut off at the knees.  We have raised safety, welfare and ethical issues, offering open-hearted requests and suggestions, but they’ve fallen on deaf ears, with broken promises. We worked semi-voluntarily for decades in very large events to make Greencrafts possible, but safety is non-negotiable for us. We’ve broached discussions, meetings, wrote lengthy reports and more, hoping when it’s people’s lives we’re talking about, that an open hearted discussion could be had. But another way is not desired. Promises were made and broken. Festivals are no longer a space that safely value small scale craftspeople or creatives. And we’re walking away to other more positive and progressive spaces. We know that the powerful force of craft will flourish, but it won’t be with us at festivals anymore.

 

Many incredible people have been a part of Greencrafts with us over the decades and we’re thankful to everyone who joined us in various fields and countries over the last 33 years. For us it was about enabling and supporting those moments of magic with you on the land, seeing the collectivity of living craft, its positive affecting change on the public, and its vibrant energy in our created pop-up villages. We’d like to thank you all. And those we may not be able to reach.

 

We were keen to get this news to you as early as we could, as we know people are planning their diaries. We’re sorry but we aren’t able to get into conversations about it. We know there might be queries – and this is why we’re sharing an outline here to explain. We’ve been approached about running areas at other events this year, but we’ve decided not to do this, and we’re not passing our Greencrafts Village name, working methods etc onto anybody else. Greencrafts won’t be at any events in 2026 onwards. Nor will any representatives of us. Please if you have one of our high-vis vests we ask that you discard it, so there isn’t any confusion at other events going forward. We’ve been told separately by Glastonbury’s management that there isn’t an interest in replacing us or desire to have a craft area at the festival anymore, which we felt it only right to share. 

 

This has been a big decision after so many years at so many different events on both sides of the ocean, and it’s not been arrived at easily, but the time came to draw a line, prioritize safety, welfare and humanity, say enough’s enough, and in doing so, this is where we landed. 

 

We want to close this by saying thank you. It’s been an honour to create what we did with you all. And we wish you all the very best, and we hope that our paths might cross again at some point.
