Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

Just back from Primal Scream at Bristol Beacon, not a bad opening night. I've seen them better but also helluva lot worse, solid 4/5, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed. Baxter Dury as support was exceptional. Bargain for £40 odd.

Had my first gig of the year last night - went to go see HotWax at the Craufurd Arms venue in Milton Keynes. Thought they were rather good. Was also impressed by support act The Pill - good aggressive punk bops and funny lyrics.

I saw Wet Leg on monday night and I have to say I was really unimpressed.  I've seen them before and enjoyed myself but not so much this time. I was all in on chaise longue when it came out. It hit just at the right time in the pandemic where it's lightheartedness was exactly what a lot of us needed. And I think it propelled them to a big level really quickly that may not have happened if it weren't for the pandemic.  Album 2 is difficult for anyone with a certain amount of success, but I think it was going to be especially difficult for them.

 

I know that tongue in cheek innuendo is their thing or whatever, but I found the new songs really lackluster. Kitsch in an annoying way. Kind of forgettable. Their set was very short - 45 mins - with Chaise Longue being played mid-set which was a surprise.  Rhian looks quite different and was really hamming up the sex appeal on stage.  The other members of the band seemed more like her backing band, including Hester, which was sort of odd.  I am interested to see how this will all play out for them.

Matt Berninger at the Brudenell was just superb tonight. Up there with my gig of the year so far. Thanks to @wosman for presale help

Orla Gartland last night at Kentish Town was really impressive - a hugely gifted performer with a great voice and a few killer tunes, certainly enough to pack the hour she'll have at Avalon on Friday.

I saw them in Bristol. Pure Phase is in of my favourite albums but I found it retrospectively, so it was bloody ace to see it live.

Longer distance trip than is the norm for me to see October Drift play Tufnel park dome ... cracking venue in London . supports from Low girl who was decent and a lovely voice although the early turnout a little disapointing . Next up were Wings of Desire who were a bit of a mix of Killers and Arcade fire , in my opinion but absolutely superb and a great warm up to get the crowd bouncing . Followed by the main headline act October Drift who played an absolutely mind blowingly energetic set and were in amongst the crowd on numerous occasions as is the norm ... its 10 years since I first saw them and the energy levels havent yet diminished , the most bouncy ive seen a crowd at one of their gigs yet and they played to a near capacity 600 cap venue , Drinks prices 7 per pint . well worth checking out on the rest of the tour , although Leadmill is sold out I believe .

Matt Berninger at the Union Chapel tonight, was a decent enough night but nothing special. I guess deep down, I want to hear the National tunes and a few of the new previously unheard songs did nothing for me. We did get Light Years which was the tune that went down the best. Must say, I do love Bonnet of Pins and its been a bit of an ear worm over the last few weeks and really enojoyed it live tonight.

 

I am not sure what the tour later in the year will be like, more low key or full band. Sort of hoping that will be a full band as my partner hated tonight. Another similar show will not go down well with her. She does not like The National and seeing Matt is a hard sell, so not expecting her to like The Troxy show either.

 

I think you could only buy 2 tickets and tonight was one of those nights were it was so obvious there were loads of partners who had been dragged to the show and I bet none who was not already a huge National fan went away converted.

I'm a big fan of Wings of Desire but yet to see them live. Turns out they're from my home town too, so hoping they do a small gig back here at some point.

Frank Turner in Liverpool on Friday night. One of those acts I couldn't be sure how many times I've seen now, somewhere around 15, so I'm never sure if I should bother again. It doesn't take long to decide that yes, yes I should bother. A great show with a couple of lesser aired tunes thrown in. A one two of Ballad and Prufrock part way through was nice.

 

 

Support from Amigo The Devil who were very entertaining, particularly the song I Hope Your Husband Dies, which had an interesting tale to go with it.

Saw the amazing Hania Rani perform Ghosts (mostly) at Barbican last night.

Enjoyed it much more than the first time, at Somerset House. More suitable venue for style of music (although I love SH in general).

 

But also she played with an ensemble which elevated the experience. I was properly swept away by the lush music and ethereal vocals.

 

Shame Hania signs and plays keyboards facing away from the crowd though. Weird watching the back of an artist's head.

I don't know that much about them but had heard a few tunes and so thought they would be worth a night out as I picked up free Bluelight Tickets.

 

There was definitely backing track parts with drums & keyboards but assumed that was it and all part of the show, while they do theatrical skits. Just googled and did not know about the miming but after watching them and already knowing it sounds like there is at least a backing track, then I can see that yeah they could well be miming.

 

Was still a fun night out, sort of glad I did know about the miming stuff before going.

Don't worry ignorance is bliss, I never knew and so did not effect my night. One of the few perks of working in the NHS is that I often pick up free or cheap tickets to events I would not normally pay full price to see.

 

If I picked up free or very cheap tickets in the future, I would still go as great fun but could not imagine becoming a real fan of a band that does not play live.

Pigs x7 last night at Birkenhead Future Yard, with support from Irked.

 

Pigs were marvellous, small room, very loud. Irked were fun, I couldn't make out what most of the vocalist was saying, which isn't normally a problem but it sounded like the lyrics would be part of the appeal.
