ok - so why are the mail in ballot counts taking so long in some of these key swing states and not in other states?

It’s not necessarily that they’re taking longer - it’s that they need to count ALL of them due to how close the state is.

California, for example, might rumble on for ages but no one cares (apart from Matt!)

oh, right...and they get called by AP or whoever when they think done and dusted even when not all counted...which was possibly a mistake for Arizona...

In some states Republicans voted to stop those states being able to count mail in ballots early.

Yep! PA is also a state where they couldn’t start counting the postal votes until after the in person votes.

A big reason for the delay: Laws in each state barred election officials from getting a head start on processing and counting the record number of mail-in ballots voters used amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Take Pennsylvania. The Republican-controlled legislature refused to change state law to allow county election officials to start processing mail-in ballots until 7 a.m. on Election Day. That left local election officials with mountains of absentee ballots to process and count on top of the in-person vote cast on Tuesday.
