Hospitalisations down for the 4th day in a row if you’re looking for a positive twist

Serious numbers but it doesn't look to be careering out of control (yet?) like in March.

Next week vital to see what happens when new restrictions should start making a difference, if any.

Lots of non fresher Uni students going back this week and next...might have an impact?

We didn't extend our scheme, it is a new scheme that companies have to opt into and commit to paying a third extra of employees wages until the scheme is over.

Furlough was 80 percent paid by government until august then the company paid some 10 - 20 percent though September and October knowing that they'd only have to pay some for a limited time.

This new scheme doesn't guarantee anyone on furlough or even employed right now will be employed past october.

The old scheme didn't either once companies had to start paying into it. And like I say, even going back to the company paying zero payroll costs, it still doesn't guarantee the jobs, as companies will still bust as they can't pay rent, supplier contracts, or they'll lose contracts anyway to people who can't wait until we get back on our feet.

Yeah there's going to be problems with any scheme. But we needed something more than they gave. Even if that something was just increasing UC for the people who will need new jobs, so they don't go into crippling debt between jobs

This all seems to be heading in the wrong direction.

Many of the figures do appear to be heading that way, which I think is a good reminder to the public of the important of keeping to the restrictions especially as these rising numbers are even before the winter too. If we are seeing case numbers of over 7k in early Autumn with restrictions in place then that isn't exactly the best sign in the world. So it's important to try to keep to the rules and hopefully if we do then we keep on top of this before winter hits.

Guys today’s death numbers are really quite horrible, aren’t they.

Interestingly, they’re pretty much at the amount they were when lockdown 1 was announced. I don’t think that they’ll take off over the next 2 weeks from 70 to 900 as they did last time, purely because the two weeks pre lockdown we weren’t really social distancing at all whereas now we have the 1m+ rule, the rule of six etc. But we probably will start seeing triple digit daily deaths within the next week.

Yeah I don’t think it will be as bad as last time but this time next month I expect to be seeing 200-400 deaths daily.

Its horrible.

On the bright side France and Spain aren’t really seeing that. I’m pretty sure the Spaniards in particular are just fudging the numbers and ignoring loads of deaths to make themselves look good though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but did they predict around 200 a day by November with no action taken? Would that mean they're going deaths will be lower than this due to better treatment, measures in place and fewer confirmed cases than during the spring?

Vallance did say that...but that was probably taking into account better treatment.

These forecasts are always very difficult to predict as so many factors...especially people's behaviour.

I have a feeling this virus will just go away once Trump is voted out.

I’m not pro Trump at all so that’s not why you got a downvote.

You got the downvote because you sound like the Facebook nutters who think the whole thing is faked for political gain.

Random side thought but I find it a bit weird  how much some British people get emotionally invested in the American election.

Like, I agree Trump is a total nutcase and I’d 100% be voting Biden if I lived over there, but some Brits that I know in real life are planning wild celebrations if Biden wins and I just can’t imagine ever getting all that invested in another country’s politics. Especially given all the other murderous dictators and far right arseholes in the world that we’d never dream of protesting against.

I've gone onto england.nhs.uk and found the daily admissions date for hospitals which was published today. This has date for 1st August up to 27th September and is pretty interesting. I've gone through the first bit of data so far and put it into several different date periods. I thought people might be interested to see what it shows.

Total reported admissions to hospital and diagnoses in hospital:

(Shows the number of patients admitted in previous 24 hours where patient known to have COVID-19 plus patients diagnosed in hospital with COVID-19 in previous 24 hours)

This kind of echos the point from that Tweet of Pippas above and also a point I was making this morning where it seems the NE & NW are becoming the epicentre of the 2nd wave for England, similar to Italy in their first wave (for hospitals). Now I don't think this will lead to the scenes we saw in Italy in March but is a reminder of how quickly matters can escalate and why restrictions in the area are being taken. Equally just because we might have better treatments which lead to people coming out of hospital, it shouldn't be forgotten that there will be a small but significant portion of people that will feel the effects of COVID for long after they come out of hospital.

Well trump's impact is far greater than america alone, a lot of the devolution of political and online discourse has been caused by the divisive and at time incendiary actions and words from the US president. I think the english are also invested because they are supposed to be one of our closest allies and it's better to be allied with biden than trump.

Also biden winning would restore some of my faith in democracy and he american people.

Maybe some people are really into Politics and find that type of thing interesting. Why do some people in the UK support and cheers for NFL teams, because they are invested. It's not weird at all.
