I agree the furlough scheme didn't cover people who entirely lost work here either. But I'm sure the scheme has saved many employers from going out of business in germany and literally saved my job, i was let go before furlough was announced and then my work u-turned on that when furlough was announced. Also I wasn't calling for a extension to furlough per say, but something. There has to be something better than what they've done.

But tbh extending the furlough would work for me. Because At least knowing what my future looks like I could prepare easier to pay off arrears etc etc. At the moment i have no identification from my work whether i still have a job at the end of october.

I just wanted to point out that a lot of people on here seem to be in office jobs or jobs where they can work from home or just be older and longer into their career, whereas a young person just starting in the job market, this has cut the legs of our prospects and our future. - The majority of people did not get "too much " furlough

And yes a rent holiday would have helped ALOT - But the government didn't do that. Simply doing that when we started the lockdown, putting more stress on landlords, who will largely have savings,  than on low income renters, who are working pay check to paycheck would mean im in a better situation now.

Not having a go just wanted to give some perspective as I see so many people deciding the validity of government policy based on their own situations. "I don't need furlough so no one should have it" or "some people are scamming furlough so we should cut this lifeline" but the answer should be to work hard and put a better scheme in place then.

But alas, the government doesn't care about making people jobless and homeless so why would i expect anything more. - not having a go at you btw just frustrated at the situation.

That's all fair enough, I just think furlough is a very blunt tool. More targeted support so industries don't go under and proper safety nets (things like rent holidays, a level of benefit that you could actually live off, etc) would allow them to try and encourage those who will be out of work long term to see what other opportunities are available.

You’ve definitely never come across a celebrity dead pool contest then 😂

I have and don't think that's very respectful either.

Ouch :( that article has knocked me for six

Hoping this is just one of those ‘doom and gloom’ reports. So, I’m not going to let it knock me back. Even though I’ve got so little faith in our government are they really going to get as far as a vaccine ready to go but unable to get it out there for 1-2 years? I’m sure we will be getting glass factories ready to make the vials, make use of the refrigerated lorries used for produce (I’m sure we could accept the non import of avocados and other non essentials for a short while), didn’t we buy a load of fridges for Brexit last year - hope you see where I’m coming from - whilst there’s a will there’s a way - it’s happening. Hopefully this article is a kick up the backside to make it happen

Non-essential? Are you fucking kidding me?  If it's a toss up between no Glastonbury or going without my deconstructed smashed avo on sourdough for 6 months, well pass me the pepper grinder and organic butter and get the hell off my property!

I knew I was going to get criticised about avocados 😃

No, I know. You just strike me as calmer than a genie. Your more like Gene Kranz in mission control with your graphs.

Why does there have to be an end point for the help? If the Government really cared then they would keep support going for as long as the pandemic is around. I’m not talking wholesale support to every industry, aim it at the ones that need it and are still not open.

Obviously if it looked a vaccine was never going to come then we would have to look at living with the virus and that stage we probably wouldn’t have tough restrictions in place anyway. But at the moment it looks like we will get a vaccine so keep the support in place at least through till the Spring, then review the situation.

The current furlough scheme has been extended though, but it only benefits places that can open to some degree. If they extend it to also help industries that are not open, that is blanket coverage.

And while a vaccine will start to see a return to normal, I'd be amazed if nightclubs and standing gigs were a thing at any point in 2021.

There's also a point at which it becomes a lottery - assuming they don't go back to paying the entire 80% of the wage with no employer contribution, then if you're working for a company with loads of money in the bank, you get to stay employed as they can keep the payments going. If you work for a smaller company that just can't meet their other fixed expenses and the furlough top-up, you get laid off. Nothing was different between the two cases, just one company had more money (or cared about their employees more).

And it's a big deal because of the sheer gulf between unemployment benefit and furlough payments. If we were a country that pegged unemployment benefit at 80% of your departing salary for six months, like other countries do, end furlough would be a lot less scary.

It should be a complete scandal that unemployment benefit is £300 a month but when the middle classes end up unemployed furlough is up to £1500 a month.

The thing is I think it is perfectly reasonable for the Government to say things are going to be different for a long time so those who can find other work should do so. Those who can't find work should obviously have an expanded safety net rather than our miserly benefit system but they don't necessarily need the full 80% they are currently getting. So long as the businesses are protected so that there are "proper" jobs to go back to. In fact it could be argued that a lot of the furlough money would have been better spent supporting the industries worst effected and I say that as someone who is currently on furlough.

I think in retrospect it would have been. I don't think furlough would have happened at all if the government knew at the outset that this would be nowhere near over by winter.

Yes the country will be different for a long term. But Germany was able to extend their furlough to 2021.

We have extended our scheme as well. The German scheme was only 60% for the first four months, going up to 80% now. It's almost the opposite of our approach.

We didn't extend our scheme, it is a new scheme that companies have to opt into and commit to paying a third extra of employees wages until the scheme is over.

Furlough was 80 percent paid by government until august then the company paid some 10 - 20 percent though September and October knowing that they'd only have to pay some for a limited time.

This new scheme doesn't guarantee anyone on furlough or even employed right now will be employed past october. - It also is targeting industries that can already afford to be open and maybe saving a few hospitality jobs, probably less than the damage of the new restriction will cause.

So no they are not extending furlough then have replaced it with a scheme that will help some, but it's predicted millions of job loss if nothing else is put in place by end of october

Thank you, that’s what I need.

Do you reckon tomorrow’s briefing might bring some extra news and restrictions given this increase?

Media seem to have been briefed that tomorrow is just an update on the latest data and statistics and not expecting new restrictions. But of course that’s subject to change
