Country X goes back to normal earlier with terrible economic damage and high death toll.

Country Y goes back to normal later with much lower economic damage and death toll.

Massive oversimplification to say Country X has done better...

You know that’s what this government does though? And it’s an easy message for them to get across/taps into the ‘Britain First’ mindset.

Benefits of AstraZeneca vaccine outweighs risk of side effects, EMA says

In a statement, the European Medicines Agency said:

EMA currently remains of the view that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine in preventing Covid-19, with its associated risk of hospitalisation and death, outweigh the risks of side effects.

I saw a tweet where the percentage of vaccinated people who have died from blood clots is actually lower than the percentage of unvaccinated people who have died from bloodclots.

Of course some people who have received the vaccine will have died in the time since they received it. It’s not a magical immortality injection. Especially as it’s the more vulnerable members of society who have received it first.

I think there's a cluster of people in Norway and Denmark who've got blood clots after receiving the vaccine recently....I think..

Oh, the amount of people that die due to DIC after they contract Covid is way higher than what is currently being observed in vaccinated individuals. Even if this turns out to be real, it still won’t stop us using the vaccine. But it may identify who should not get this one and there are alternatives.

Blood clots can happen without being vaccinated. A large factor in the cause of bloodclots is being immobile for a while. Currently a lot of people are doing a lot more sitting around than they usually do. This could easily be the cause of the higher instances of bloodclots.

This should be a reminder to all of us to shift our lazy arses off our sofas now and again.

but in Norway it was younger health care workers who were getting it.

Not interpreted as confrontational at all! No, you have no safety signal for the vaccine you are currently administering. If the MHRA thought there was, they too would pause the roll out, but they don't so, no reason to stop at the moment. There have been clotting events in the UK, but it's the odd clustering of them in people that you wouldn't expect them in and in anatomical locations that you wouldn't expect that has raised the red flag on the EU doses. There's a biological explanation for why it might be happening. I really don't want to fuel anti-vax sentiment by explaining it (i had got an explanation here, but deleted it as it'll open can of worms!)... It's probably random, but it's something I would look into if I were a regulator. That signal isn't there in the UK, and your supplies are not coming from the same place, so either its random or its a manufacturing issue. Important to find out though.

It's really interesting that many people (not necessarily on here) won't even accept this it's emergency use and these things need investigating, which sounds to me like sound scientific process and

I'd be very concerned if these things were being swept under the carpet- if it turned out something could be done or certain people told to get a different brand or whatever even just to be sure, then we'd all be furious if they pressed ahead and us or a loved one suffered for it needlessly just to get everything done quickly (I'm talking hypothetically). and if it I'd a bad batch then surely stopping temporarily to get it out of circulation is better than using it??

But I suppose on the flip side there are bigger issues than a handful of people which I think explains the sentiment against this caution

And why is it so politicised against the EU, as if they're tarnishing the good name of the "British" vaccine just for a laugh? I'd Still prefer to live there than here...

This is from the European EMA site on timing with the AstraZeneca investigation:

EMA’s investigation has been continuing over the weekend, and rigorous analysis of all the data related to thromboembolic events will be carried out in the coming days. Experts are looking in great detail at all the available data and clinical circumstances surrounding specific cases to determine whether the vaccine might have contributed or if the event is likely to have been due to other causes. EMA’s safety committee (PRAC) will further review the information tomorrow (Tuesday) and has called an extraordinary meeting on Thursday 18 March to conclude on the information gathered and any further actions that may need to be taken.

And the Glastonbury demographic of the 70s.

wasn't on for most of the 70s.

When I first went in 1990 it was pretty wild, fires, dogs, smack etc. Infact got a bit nasty at the end as far as I can remember. In mid 90s was still a lot of that, but not quite as mad. By early 2000s was just too many people, and then they put the fence up, and now it's full of tarquins.

Is that the one with the riots on the documentary?

it might be. Don't think the travellers wanted to leave...so there was a bit of a stand off with the police. We were out of there before trouble started. I was with a girlfriend who was starting to get paranoia issues from too much acid! Great days.

Haha, I also wasn't alive then. Just read about the involvement of people like Arabella Churchill (I'm not saying that she was a champagne socialist, just that hippies weren't necessarily a working class thing).

Yeah, I understand there was a bit more "character" before the fence went up. I'm white and middle class so I didn't start going till the noughties! (Although in my defence I was a child before then.)

some (eastern) countries seem to be very dependent on AZ at the moment. I suspect we will follow Germany with stopping but who knows. Doesn`t make much sense anyway as the decision by EMA is expected on Thursday (and they already made it clear they couldn`t find out any connection). so its probably for three days only. all it will do it will harm the trust in AZ and people will cancel their vaccination appointments.

I've said it before once we start opening back up it's going to take time for a lot of people to get used to social situations, crowds etc.. I know I'm going to have my work cut out easing the fella out the house as he had anxiety before all this and covid has not helped that tbh

Article in the Guardian on how to talk those baby steps back to normality

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/mar/15/how-to-address-social-anxiety

On a side note yesterday the 14th March was the last time I met with my friends socially 😞 I've done one brief doorstep visit before Christmas to drop some presents off, but all other interactions have been at either the supermarket or the post office... it's been along time!!
