A lot of countries at start of a third wave...B117 spreading.  Germany, Italy, Poland, France etc....

True. But not a massive wave as implied (look at the low death numbers) and warmer months will keep things at bay.

And there are plenty of European countries with cases falling.

Portugal and Spain have fallen considerably and are opening up.

Denmark, Finland, Switzerland all have relatively low case numbers too.

Sorry to disappoint but:

- The Europeans are getting other vaccines and lots of them.

- Most of Europe has enjoyed freedoms recently whilst the UK is in lockdown

- Cases are falling in many countries

- There won't be a 'mammoth third wave' in 3 months time. See points above plus it's Summer.

But they havent got them NOW.

Germany just said they need to lockdown again or theyll be a third wave. And they have 1.7 million doses waiting in a fridge. Crazy

one unnoticed byproduct of the AstraZeneca clusterficken is that European medicines regulation is now in a state of anarchy. The EMA is either ignored or bullied. Meanwhile individual EU countries are splitting off to do private deals for vaccines, some of them unapproved by the EMA, like Sputnik. They are already using them.

At the same time countries like Italy are impounding legally contracted vaccines, under new EU medicine laws, yet suspending the use of the same vaccines in Italy.

"Farce" doesn't really cut it, as a description.

well, hopefully...but B117 was devastating for UK...hope doesn't cause as much damage on the continent.

here cases are on the rise and experts warn that there will be a third wave but nobody can say how this one will turn out. weird that they closed down when cases have been relatively low and now as they rise they opened up, but maybe our special plan is in confusing the virus. also weird is that Portugal has been so much better now as they have been on the brink of a catastrophe and our country or Germany wanted to help out.

Maybe...just maybe there is a bad batch, or something different in manufacturing of the vaccines at EU plant? This is possible, right?

It's definitely worth not administering any more of that batch, just in case. I would think these things are tracked though so they should know which batch each dose comes from?

Edit - I mean, clearly they do, otherwise they wouldn't know that all these cases came from the same batch in the first place!

And also surely it could be argued we've gotten ahead of the curve by locking down harshly during the winter months and vaccinated the most vulnerable people in that time? Italy and France both reported 20K+ cases yesterday whilst we had 4K and whilst we're opening up they could be locking down again. I'd rather have freedoms in the summer when its far more pleasant to be out than in the winter where there's very little to do

AZN have put a statement out saying there are no issues with that batch though

What they've said is

In terms of quality, there are also no confirmed issues related to any batch of our vaccine used across Europe, or the rest of the world. Additional testing has, and is, being conducted by ourselves and independently by European health authorities and none of these re-tests have shown cause for concern.

So - nothing confirmed yet but they are still testing.

clusterfcuk

In an emergency press conference, Jens Spahn, the health minister, called the decision a “precautionary suspension” which he said it was part of the government’s “open and transparent” approach in communication about the virus.

He stressed that if the vaccine was given the all clear, the government would do all it could to encourage people to take the vaccine once again.

Journalists at the press conference pushed him on the topic, arguing that it would be difficult to persuade people to receive AstraZeneca after yet another warning about its safety.

The government has repeatedly said all Germans would receive the opportunity to get a vaccine by 21 September but that target is now in huge doubt.

The decision to suspend AstraZeneca has the potential to bring chaos to the plans to give a second dose of AstraZeneca to tens of thousands - including hospital staff, teachers and carers - who have already received their first dose.

Karl Lauterbach, the Social Democrats’ health specialist said he thought it was a mistake to have suspended AstraZeneca, arguing the decision would cost more lives than it saved.

    • A question has crossed my (questionable) mind;   Has the size of the Green Fields remained the same as other areas have expanded / been added on to, since say, 2014 (the last time that I attended)? Are they 'lost' within, or well attended?    That's actually two questions. The second one just slipped in at the end by taking advantage of my lack of means to stop it.
    • I'd say the same about Kylie.    Annie would be awesome, Duran not so much, and on the issue of them wanting a beanie slot, that probably rules out a fair few others who I think would fit the bill very well... and are legitimately more entitled to a headline, and/or too expensive.   Was just about to suggest Chaka Khan, but see @Gnomicide has beat me to it!    What about someone like Bryan Ferry?
    • It's certainly gone more that way, but then they went completely in the opposite direction and had Cat Stevens.
    • Chaka can, or Chaka can't?
    • TVOD are playing Blue Basement in London 2/9 with a complete EOTR/Psych Fest shaped hole before their next gig in Lyon on 8/9. Well received in the Big Top last year, reckon they're nailed on for a secret set in the Tipi.
