I don't understand how you get through life being this thick- do you constantly get stung by the wallet inspector? Are you forever clicking on spam emails?

10 years or so ago I stayed in St George. Actually, I couch surfed, staying with this lovely Mormon couple. Middle aged, converts rather than born in to it, pretty conservative in a lot of ways but proud of and adored their out lesbian activist daughter who now lived in a commune in San Francisco. Their lives sounded like a low budget indie film that's getting reasonable buzz on the festival circuit. Genuinely lovely people. made a point on their profile of saying that they welcomed anyone and everyone as long as there were no drink, drugs or smoking. Pretty much said don't be scared of the fact we are Mormon, we don't bite. Had some fascinating conversations with them. I remember I arrived later than expected and knew by the time I got there they'd be out so had resigned myself to waiting in the car until they got back. But there was a note on the door saying it was open, then another one inside telling me there was a plate of food in the microwave, where my room was (no couch for me!) and how the washing machine worked in case i needed to do laundry. For someone they'd exchanged a couple of messages with on a website. I'd be interested to see where they are now politically and socially. Really hope they haven't lurched to the right.

Met some of their neighbours too. Now they were very conservative. I think I knew their views on government, taxes and abortion before I knew their names. (I exaggerate, but only slightly)

God I wasn’t expecting to see this kind of comment on here, and it’s not the negative outlook I really needed for me day.

Seriously though, are you ok? Do you need some sort of help to help you through these tough times? We are all on here to help as much as we can and if this is affecting you this much then we will all support you all that we can.

I probably should have shorn that last bit off my comment - my tongue was planted in my cheek (hence the sarcastic smiley face!) but I get that just feeding such negative thoughts isn't helpful. Sorry that it bothered you.

I just feel like I've been thinking for so long - for years now - that "okay, this is a low point, but something good is going to happen for the world soon. It has to! Peaks and troughs!"... and.. it hasn't... yet...

Hopefully 2021 brings a bit of an upswing. It's about time!

Jesus Christ some comment sections at the moment are completely brain numbing.

This conspiracy theory shit is out of control. I’m reading some about the test sites that apparently they are actually swab centres to collect human DNA for some billionaire...

When will THIS shit end. I swear to god it’s getting out of control. Every bit of news I seem to look at on the Internet is littered with this hyper conspiracy shite.

It’s what happens when you stop bullying in schools. Some people need it to take them down a peg or twelve.

Not sure about this take. I think it’s more the case that we’ve created a platform where people can now just ignore news and facts that unsettle them.

News is unsettling? Its  fake!

When you come back into the thread and see more conspiracy theory chat.

I used to love conspiracy theories when it was dumb stupid shit like the queen being a lizard. But people take this to the voting booth now and it’s very concerning.

What started out as some left field form of entertainment and how become a platform for radicalising those without critical thinking skills.

I mean social media fills those gaps that representative democracy doesn't...there are a lot of people out there who have views but feel they are never heard...social media as empowered these people and their beliefs...whether nationalist, socialist, enviromentalist or racist....and this is exploited more and more.

Well yes because the crux of a conspiracy theory is that it puts the reader at the centre. They lap it up because it makes them think that they have a bigger role to play in the world. That it’s THEM and THEIR way of life being targeted.

It’s empowering to think that you are at the centre of it all.

Do we actually know if cases are down today or is just less testing? I’ve seen on the news loads of people can’t get access to tests in hotspot areas....

I’m not in a hotspot area and one of my wife’s colleague’s children had a cold so wasn’t allowed into school. She’s spent the whole day trying to get a test with no luck whatsoever.

GREAT

See my post earlier, these numbers, on their own, are pretty meaningless as a way of tracking the spread of Covid, they don't tell you how many people overall were admitted and so you don't know what percentage of the intake were infected, if the NHS are now catching up with routine work which was shelved earlier in the year you will now have more admissions in total and so more Covid cases (all admissions are routinely tested).

From a BBC report,

"NHS England figures also show the number of people waiting more than a year for hospital treatment rose from just over 1,000 in June last year to 50,500 for the same month this year.

And a total of 94,354 patients were admitted for routine treatment in June, down from 289,203 in June 2019.

The Health Foundation charity said the data showed the NHS was still "nowhere close to business as usual following the first outbreak of Covid-19"."

So with hospital admissions rising is that not ringing any alarm bells ?

Its admissions for covid. So not great

No it's not, it's people admitted for any reason,

Maybe I didn't explain it properly, yes thats the number who tested positive out of all the admissions, they weren't all Covid patients, most will have been admitted to deal with other problems, there will be more total admissions now as they try to catch up with patients who missed operations etc. earlier in the year. Just because they tested positive doesn't mean they are suffering from Covid, they could have no symptoms. Without knowing the percentage of positive tests we can't tell if the disease is more widely spread or not.

Does everyone admitted to hospital get tested for covid? So even if they test positive, we can’t necessarily pinpoint Covid as the reason for admission.

Yeah it would be good to have that separated out - how many went in for that reason and how many asymptomatically tested positive but went in for anything else.

The potential margins are quite big considering the number of asymptomatic out there - but it's still a bad trend showing cases must be huge in the community.

On that we still haven't got nearly enough of an idea of asymptomatic cases in general, thanks to the stalled testing capacity. I guess the saliva test will be where we get those answers.

That works in reverse also ... a massive increase in hospital admissions will either be down to seasonal flu or Covid ... unless somehow we are getting a road accident spike !!!  Do we wait for them to be admitted to icu to believe the numbers ? Or just when they die ? Or do we still say it’s not due to covid ? It must have been something else ?

It's labelled as Hospital admissions due to Covid. Its not someone having a car accident and then testing positive.
