But is it manageable with rest and OTC medication at home, like is the case for the majority of other illnesses and viruses we have all picked up pre Covid? If so, then that’s as good as we can realistically expect isn’t it? Part and parcel of existing on this planet.

Exactly. That is a huge win compared to what it would be like with no vaccines.

What is happening in terms of financial support to help businesses deal with these impromptu lockdowns?

Basic overview here, but I believe the federal government has said a lockdown has to be for 7 days minimum before financial help is given. Victoria is trying to get a pro-rata payment, I think. It's a negotiation happening at the moment.

But didn't rock them enough to kill them?

Bit like a normal flu virus then?

Cheers vaccines.

I've had the flu once im my lifetime, I've already had COVID once and likely catch it again within the next few months. Considering the virus has been in the country for around 18 months, thats a significant difference.

That's a big difference in how quickly it spreads, capiche?

People who say 'oh its just the flu'. The flu is fucking shit and not something you want to catch on the regular. Unless we just want to live in a society where being pretty ill with flu like symptoms every few months is 'fine'....

In what way are you likely to catch it again in the next few months if you have had it once and will be double vaxxed?

Also any need for the tone lol? who says capiche fs

If we are at 100k + cases a day soon and I want to sociallise, then it's highly likely I'll catch it again in some capacity?

I just think its funny that people are waving off large parts of society potentially being ill at the same time as 'fine'.

It's the first time I've said capiche in probably 15 years, but felt appropriate at the time....

yeah, the vaccines have made it more like the flu. Still unsure that health services in current state can deal with covid+flu+everything else.

I guess my concern is similar … I’ve had the double jab and likely to be protected as is very clear with vaccines doing the job … but I still don’t fancy covid or flu ? But with high prevelance of the virus my risk of getting it increases … I’ve also fortunately never had flu in my lifetime but see the risk of getting covid as much much higher .. cos I’m surrounded by it

If you're double vaxxed and have had it before and you then caught it again (which I doubt) the you likely wouldn't even know you had it.

If you're so concerned then don't socialise

Nope, the vaccines have made it like the common cold - which is treated at home without medical attention in almost all circumstances.
The sweeping generalisation and comparisons between the flu and a cold is an issue here. If you’ve had the flu then you’d certainly know about it, as it’s more than feeling a bit under the weather for a few days.

In which case you need to weigh up your desire to move towards "normal" life against the possibility of contracting a virus which *could* give you symptoms akin to the flu for a few days.

no, because some people will still require hospital and will still die, but not enough to overwhelm services and require lockdowns. That is what I meant. Most people who get flu don't require hospital.

Fear over maths ?

The statical chances even with a high amount of covid knocking around is still in the region of 0.00 something...

We have been talking over the last few days about the number of people who have been jabbed catching it as it seems like transmission is still going on to jabbed people … or am I wrong on this ?

Those on the front line are seriously knackered & fed up. Working 13hrs a day in any heat wearing a mask, visor, gloves and scrubs etc is seriously unpleasant. Thankly 2 weeks restbite here as the period including Glasto is a longstanding holiday. Mrs L in particular is not looking forward to a return to duty.

To be fair they said exactly the same thing last year and it didn’t materialise. Obviously we had other problems last winter, but I wouldn’t surprised if Covid just outcompetes flu for a few winters to come.

we had lockdown and restrictions that would have stopped influenza spreading here and elsewhere?

This winter could be bad because no such restrictions.

Pretty sure the official line is the vaccines still offer great protection against infection - anecdotal posting in here from anonymous users doesn't really beat that.

Absolutely right but a decent number of people saying it does seem to indicate that to be the be the case .. just look at the euros thread .. and also personal experience of people I know

Just thinking .. imagine mass testing for the common cold or the likes in December/January each winter. What numbers would we be looking at then? There have been years when literally everybody I know (at work, friends and family) is run down with a snotty nose or some form.

being fully vaccinated doesn't stop you catching it, but greatly reduces chance of serious illness (can still feel pretty bloody shit though), and it doesn't stop transmission, but reduces that also (I think, not sure how much by).

I would be very (pleasantly) surprised if we had no restrictions in place over winter.

I'm already buzzing for the arguments in the run up to Christmas about how those of us who choose to spend it with more than 1 person are morally redundant!

If you're double vaxxed it isn't likely to be like getting the flue either. It'll be more like a cold in all likelihood

No guilt trip from the media for seeing other people will be as strong as my Mum’s guilt trip for not being there at Christmas.

I did it last year when it was technically illegal- I can handle a bit of moral condescension.

surely won't come to that again! If any restrictions will be the soft/easy ones, masks, wfh etc. But...no one actually knows how bad it's going to get. Think I'll be getting a flu jab this winter, maybe I'll be getting a covid booster one too being so old and frail.
