It's a really interesting snapshot of a different era. It probably captures the end of one era with travellers stopped from getting onsite and the start of the mid 90's 'mass fence hopping' era culminating in 2000 and the end of that era.

With hindsight, you can see the seeds of 2000 in the video. They passingly refer to tunneling under the fence and Eavis referring to them as 'entrepreneurs' charging 20 quid and they never really got to grips with it. Would have been interesting if they'd done another documentary in 99/2000 when the fencejumping was out of control. That must have been a difficult time for the locals.

i reckon the socialist/slight anarchist in Eavis liked the fence-jumpers back then and the fact that it meant the festival was available to most people regardless of income, etc. He only cracked down when he really had to.

According to the 2017 debrief, there were a few complaints from about noise (five in total), including one quite specific complaint from a Pilton resident about offensive language from a main stage act on the Friday evening.

I wonder if that's good old Ann? Still fighting God's fight.

Ann has been with the Lord for years now.

Thanks for posting this McCor - well worth watching.  I've only got half way through but I've already learned something...  I'd always been aware of the Ann Goode situation and had seen several interviews where Michael Eavis has referred to it.  However, the impression I'd picked up was that she was a lovely old Somerset lady who belonged in a different century and was just fighting to save our souls from all the evils that come with a festival.

Having seen this, I think my impression was very wrong - Mr Eavis has just been extremely charitable/forgiving when talking about her.

This guy recently uploaded all of the 1998 BBC coverage (listened to a lot of it at work over the summer!)

Within that there are a lot of 'glastonbury shorts' which were made by video nation, features emily eavis, locals, people working at the festival and punters. I found them quite interesting!

Jo Whiley looks exactly the same, like some sort of cosmological constant

Thanks for posting this - I sadly love reading them. Who was that Friday night act with the swearing?

The council minutes noted that there were 21 external camping providers in 2017..Thats a good deal more than i would have imagined..

i think this appears to be the most recent challenge with neighbours that ME is clearly experiencing (hence the not so veiled threats to move the festival).  There must be more money in providing a field for glamping than for car parking or CV parking (highlighted by E22 being converted a few years ago)..?? Be interesting to know where the land ownership boundaries are..Do areas inside the fence belong to other farmers for instance.?

I thought MEs handling of Anne Goode on the documentary was very good tbf.. He is clearly determined and somewhat stubborn but i thought he was fair and very respectful. Sometimes you just need to be able to let people sound off, even when you possibly dont agree....

Judging by the documentary, it wouldn’t surprise me if one or two village folk had lyrics printed out in advance, followed along when they heard that song playing, then complained to the local constabulary (on speed dial, of course) when the word in question was uttered.

As far as I know, most of the land on the opposite side of the old railway line to other stage is owned by other farmers.  I remember someone telling me the clue is where there are long drops that land is owned by the Eavis's.  However, there are some long drops on the other side at the bottom of Pennards.

Really enjoyed this. Particular highlights included the guy talking about putting the stones down for the stone circle (feeling the ground and understanding the personality of each stone ?) which I had no idea were only put there in 92 and the 2 dirty old boys who were sheep farmers.

Anyone know the name of the music that features throughout and in the end credits. Really haunting synths which sound familiar but can't think of where from.

I've been told that the strip of land from the Stone Circle field to the farm house belongs to the Eavis family but I would assume the strip next to it is too - from Pennards Hill towards the farmhouse.

Yeah you're right.  Basically it's the Stone Circle, Green Fields, SEC, Pennards, Avalon, T&C, Holts, Markets, Acoustic, Kids & Pyramid.

I watched this yesterday morning, such a great piece of viewing. I had sympathy for the locals who truly had been affected and would like to think the shitting in gardens, fences getting ripped down etc is not as bad these days.

Anne Goode was just itching for confrontation however and you got the sense she found some backwards enjoyment from it all. I suspect it gave her some purpose and made her feel like she was fighting the 'good' fight. Her and her mates were in their element when they held mass under the cross. I also laughed at just how polite her and Michael's confrontations were. He was clever though as he always explained his stance in a calm manner, but never once said sorry, on camera at least.

I had no time for the travellers. Michael took them in back in 1990 (I think that was the year), they took the piss biting the hand that fed and then couldn't understand why they weren't welcome back. Talk about a wrong sense of self entitlement. If i'm wrong and not fully informed on matters however, i'll happily be corrected.

I'd say partial truth,  I did spend time with travellers and they were a huge part in the start of the festival. So much so that  they should always have a space there. Their presence is still felt in the Greenfields, the cleanest and best kept area of the whole festival. They are the same as all communities, good and bad amongst them (possibly some Goodes too ). I'd agree that some did indeed get confrontational towards the police but also understand that they too have suffered some very very heavy handed policing, not shown to much in those episodes but quite poignantly accompanied by The Levellers soundtrack of 'The battle of the Beanfield'. Not an excuse but certainly should aide ones understanding.  I can not defend the ones that litter, urinate or perform any other form of damage to our environment . But then I can't defend the people who do that within the fence either. I strongly disagree with you saying "I had no time for the travellers". That's a sweeping remark I won't buy into. Space for all at an inclusive festival. ?

I think Oxylers was purchased too a few years back.

so i assume Other as well.?

and what does that mean that they dont own.? : Above Tipi / Tipi / Above Park / Park / Arcadia / Silver Hayes / John Peel / Camping grounds to West / CV West / West car parking / CV East / East car parking..??

and going from what ME has said about potentially moving site, it is multiple owners that he has to deal with.. and you probably have a whole new generation of farmers that are a bit more clued up about what the potential is.

To be more precise, I think it was "Home Farm" I'd heard that he bought. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if that covers Oxlyers or not.
