I'm not convinced that those watching the screens will do so in a way that doesn't distract the audience from the music.   It can be quite difficult at gigs like this, as you rightly point out, to avoid people talking all over the set anyway.

I don't want to be THAT guy but I really believe that the set will be ruined by the football being on the screen at the same time.  People will naturally be chatting, cheering/jeering whenever goals are scored or almost scored, chanting about football coming home over the top of the music.

I fully appreciate that a lot of people want to watch the football but I can't see why it should be done in a way that could potentially spoil things for people who would prefer to enjoy the bands.  It's not a popular opinion but actually the priority ought to be ensuring that people enjoy the event they actually paid for.   I hope they can sort out the football for people as well but not at the expense of the music.

I think the sense of entitlement from some people on the social media feeds is a bit much actually.

Slowdive are one of the main reasons I’m going (and paying for flights and hotel) and it will be great to experience them AND the football.  That will be a unique experience if the game can be shown in silence on a big screen but if it can’t I’ll follow it on my phone one way or another.

I do see your point,  but it’s unavoidable that this won’t be like a normal Slowdive show. Even if the people just keep up with the score on the BBC feed, or the band keep the audience abreast of the score, it will change the dynamic of the show. This can be a good thing, it’s not going to be a run of the mill festival  set. I think it would be best to embrace the situation, as the band seem prepared to do

What @TomViolence said. I've no problem them putting up screens somewhere for people to watch the football but showing it in a way that is going to impact on the enjoyment of a band's set is not on. The are plenty of facilities available in the rest of London if you want to watch it. If you're watching the match you won't be watching the bands anyway so just come along after it's finished.

You’re missing the point. I’m not going to London to watch a football match in a grotty pub, I’m going to see Slowdive. That experience would be better if they were a dreamy soundtrack to England winning a World Cup Quarter Final.

And who looks at the screens normally when a band they like is on - you look at the band.

The vast majority of people at a big concert like Hyde Park look at the screens!

I look at the screens because I am small and can rarely see the stage over peoples heads. Although if everyone throwing a hissy about the football is not actually going to show up til 6pm then it probably means I'll have a great view until then. Cheers guys!

Otherwise what would be the point of having them!

I also find screens distracting, even if I am in a position where I can see the band I often find myself watching the screens even when I don't really want to. If there were showing something other than the band it would be even worse.

The organisers would need to buy a license to show it too and I imagine that wouldn't be cheap. Why would they spend the money when the event is sold out? They would sell more beer but the drink franchise is probably sold to someone else who take the profits, so they wouldn't see any of that. So there isn't really a plus side for them but a downside in possibly upsetting fans who have come for the music and not football.

just cant understand people who buy tickets for a concert and then miss the concert to watch football.

I bought my ticket in December. I didn't know until the Belgium game whether we would be playing on Friday and Saturday so I actually don't think your argument is valid here. The clash wasn't always evident. Had we topped the group the match would have been tomorrow.

I am going for Slowdive and Interpol (Pornography is one of my fave albums of all time but I doubt The Cure will venture down that path) and I would be over the moon to mix football in with that. My two favourite things in the world. What an amazing and unique opportunity that would be. Anyway I'm sure Slowdive licensed a track to FIFA so they might be friendly to letting us know the score at the very least.

Really, even at the back I look at the stage?   Even through a sea of heads I look at what I can see of the stage.

Anyway there’s not going to be a massive crowd at 3 o’clock while England are playing.

Are there any official set finish times yet? I got the app but it's absolute crap

Really looking forward to Roger tomorrow. Just off out to get my train tickets.

Didn't realise there were two stages (haven't been to Hyde Park since Blur in '09). That's a tight squeeze between, err, Squeeze and Roger. Does anyone know if the sets overlap?

I hope they don't show any football.

My friend's been to at least three gigs on this tour and his top tip is that "it's a better show from the back".

@Glastoworker are you still going tomorrow? Also, does the Finsbury cock up mean that there will be lots of WBC volunteer spaces up for grabs for Glasto '19 & '20?

According to the app, Squeeze finish at 19.40 and Roger starts at 19.50. So no overlap but you'll need to sprint if you want to catch all of both. I'll happily miss all/part of Squeeze but I'm not sure that sentiment is shared with the rest of the group.

Why is it a better show from the back - is it the visuals?

You have to get there quite early and immediately go into the front portion accessed from the left as you look at the stage. There will be staff handing out wristbands which will give you access to the front part all day and allow you to come and go. If you arrive too late and the wristbands have gone you won’t be able to get into the front bit at all. Your early entry ticket won’t help you if you don’t get there in time. This has been the case for the last few BST events I’ve been to. Obviously if there is a gold circle thing going on you would need one of those rip off tickets to get in but for The Cure I think it’s just a get in early job.

Roughly speaking, how early should I be there? The Primary Entry time of The Cure day is 12:30. Approximately when am I supposed to join the queue to secure the wristband — for instance, is 11:00 too late? If it is, then what time? Needless to say, the earlier the better — I know that. Nobody can guarantee it, but any clue if by guess would help.

I’ve always had GA tickets and gone in within half an hour of the GA entrance time and been ok every time.

Thanks for the reply.

You mean, you always bought a standard GA ticket, not a primary entry one? Actually I thought you had an experience of going in with a primary entry ticket (that costs slightly more than a standard GA) hence my question.

Does anybody out there give me a good suggestion as to my question?

I can't imagine they would sell more primary entry tickets than there is capacity in the front section, otherwise what's the point? But then they do seem to like money. They might have sold even more this year. I've never had primary entry and have always managed to make the front section when I've tried in the past.

Surely the fact there’s been no official announcement on the big screen with all the questions suggests they’re trying for it?

When I saw Paul McCartney there in Hyde Park they had England v Germany on a screen near the sound desk during Elvis Costello.

That clash would have had me even more torn.

TBH, I think that the lack of announcement indicates that it's not going to be shown.

People genuinely believe that they can show the match on the main stage screens whilst Slowdive and Editors play and that won't ruin the music for people who actually want to watch those bands.

It would be lovely if they could come up with a solution for people to watch the World Cup match

Easy: quickly book The Lightning Seeds.

With the current predicted staffing levels, I might not even bother buying a ticket and just saunter through the gates!

When I saw Blur there a few years ago, no-one even asked for or looked at my ticket. I just walked in and had my bag checked.

    • Had a bit of time to properly think about the bands I saw over the weekend. Top 10 acts for me:    1. Fall Out Boy - Pulled out something truly unique and special for the headline slot. That first hour was absolutely phenomenal and maybe the best hour of music I’ve ever experienced. Honestly, pure, unfiltered joy. I was beaming from ear to ear, jumping around and singing my heart out to every song from those first 4 records like my life depended on it. All I’ve done is watch my videos back and listen to those albums since I got home; the set really really touched my heart.   2. Pantera - They sounded great (even Phil). I was so excited before they came on and that curtain drop was iconic. I never got to see them because I was far too young but this really made up for it. Crowd was gigantic and loving every second. I left towards the end of Floods to get a spot for FOB but I am going to try for tour tickets so I can see the rest of their songs. They were my #1 most anticipated act and they delivered more than I could have hoped for.    3. Enter Shikari - always going to make my top acts, no matter where they play. They’re my favourite band I think they absolutely smashed the slot and showed how bonkers it is that they have never played the Main Stage before. Their energy is unmatched and the setlist was packed with bangers. Would be great to see them sub one day, hopefully. Production was awesome, too.    4. Queens of the Stone Age - one of the best sounds of the whole weekend. They sounded monolithic from where I was near to the front left of the sound tower. The setlist was perfect and the crowd around me was just as up for it as the band. Song For The Dead was one of the best moments of the whole weekend. I absolutely had a ball watching QOTSA.    5. Soft Play - one of the biggest surprises ever for me. They were bloody brilliant. I’ve always knocked them but my fiancée and our mate love them and dragged me along and I’m so glad they did. Really great energy from both band and crowd and they have absolutely won me over. They’ve got some great singalong tunes.    6. Limp Bizkit - THE ULTIMATE PARTY BAND. You know what you’re getting with Bizkit but, my Lord, it’s just THE BEST thing. By far the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen at a festival I’ve been to, it was swamped all the way to the food trucks and up to the Ferris wheel. I absolutely believe they will headline the next time they play after seeing what I saw on Sunday. They’re timeless.    7. Dying Wish - the best sound I heard all weekend. The most crushing guitar tone imaginable and Emma sounded glorious. Tent was packed for them before it started raining heavy so that was a good sign. This is what metalcore should sound like.    8. Polyphia - really, really impressive and enjoyable. I was really concerned how it would translate to that stage but I think it worked fantastically. The pyro was a nice addition and the other guitarist was a good hype man between songs. They are a ludicrously skilled band and I found them so engaging and genuinely fascinating to watch. It was a really nice soundtrack to some of the brightest sunshine we got all weekend.    9. Avenged Sevenfold - much better than the last time I saw them headline in 2018. I was hoping they play lots from the new record and they did which made me really happy as I love the new material. The older bangers sounded great and overall I think it was a solid performance. I left during Nightmare to head back to the car but was able to sing along to the rest of the set on the way to the car as you could hear it so clearly. A solid set from what I saw.    10. The Offspring - I only watched half of their set but this is what a sub headline slot should be. Bangers after bangers performed with the same energy as 20 years ago; I was so impressed with how they sounded. That opening run of Come Out and Play, All I Want, I Want You Bad and Staring At The Sun was ludicrous.    Honourable mention: Creeper - looked and performed like the coolest band in the world. Was a real shame their set was cut but they absolutely made the most of it. I felt like they really stood out and I hope they’ve picked up a lot of new fans. The pyro added to their show so much. Just a really excellent rock band who wrote insanely singable tunes.    It was also cool to see Mr Bungle; Patton is a mad man but was as impressive as ever. I didn’t realise Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo were in the band too so it was a really cool game of who’s who watching their set.   Sum 41 played a blinder and the setlist was great. Getting We’re All To Blame and Walking Disaster made my little teenage heart swell. Parkway Drive was the only disappointment of the weekend because you just couldn’t hear Winston whatsoever. The rest of the band sounded great but it was really bothersome seeing him going for it but not being able to hear it.    To be honest, I didn’t see a single performance that wasn’t enjoyable all weekend. Even Scene Queen won me over with her performance even though her music isn’t for me. Even found myself enjoying Bowling For Soup!    Overall, I had an absolutely lovely weekend with lots of my closest friends and favourite people and didn’t find the weather much of a hindrance at all. Also didn’t spend a penny at the bar all weekend and sampled lots of really great food so a good time was really had in every aspect.
    • Jessie Ware currently my only must see. Her last 2 albums have been some of my favourites of the last 5 years and annoyingly every time she has played near us the dates have conspired. I don’t want to miss out on a set that will be full of those bangers and thankfully for me this time there’s nothing up against her that comes close.    A few of my other very close to must sees are terrible clashes and I still haven’t worked out where I will be or what I will see but I know I will definitely be disco dancing on Saturday night at West Holts.
    • You do wonder what goes through the heads of these mega acts. Just do it! there is no way they would have regretted it.   another run of the mill arena gig vs the potential for a career highlight
    • Yes it actually wouldn't surprise me if West Holts hits capacity like 45 minutes in advance.
    • my fear is the option that they booked justice for one of those day because if I'll miss them it will be tragic. i have no idea who's Raye or Burna boy so i thought if they'll add someone interesting it will on the 31st but i guess you can never know I'll probably gamble and add the 31st to my trip as flight prices are always changing hoping for Justice on the 31st!! thanks for the reply
