Led Zep 4 and Joshua Tree are hard to beat, but a album new to me that has a sensational opening salvo is:

Once I was an Eagle -  Laura Marling

Take the night off

I was an eagle

You know

first 5 tracks blew me away when i first listened and hope to see her performing at least the first 4 in 8 weeks time.

Yeah that Laura Marling album has a fantastic opening run. Wasn't too in to her before that album but was immediately won over on first listen after hearing those first few songs.

When you start digging in to the classic albums pile, there ends up being quite a few that really hit the spot....

Once > Even Flow > Alive

Battery > Master of Puppets > The Thing That should Not Be

And if you don't know this one, you really need some schooling...

The Rainbow > Eden > Desire

Yes too many really, but my first found stand-outs:

Just A Little Lovin' > So Much Love > Son of a Preacher Man (Dusty Springfield)

or

One More Time > Sunday Papers > Is She Really Going Out With Him (Joe Jackson)

or

Red Rain > Sledgehammer > Don't Give Up (Peter Gabriel)

or the winner has to be

Help! > The Night Before > You've Got to Hide Your Love Away

Amazing game this, thanks OP. Think I'll create a playlist with all the good suggestions.

God I wish Doves were still playing. Probably one of the bands I miss the most at festival, they were always superb live at Glastonbury (2005 being one of my favourite Glasto sets ever)
