They did Glastonbury in 97 too, could use that as a tie in.

Rather than the dates, the real relevance is the fact they have played before and I suspect would be aware of the spectacle aspect.

When they played at Glasto '97 they were no where near as big as they are now.

If you saw the documentary the other night, it should become obvious that they will never play Glasto again.  They turned down Coachella for a few years running, until they were finally offered about $300,000.

No chance. They are done as a touring act IMO. I've always been hopeful until I watched that BBC documentary. Coachella was a one-off; the work that went into that festival performance was massive and even though that was off the back of two successful albums, they took a huge amount of persuading (ie cash) to do it and they perceived it as a big risk for themselves. I can't see them taking that risk again, especially as they've got a legendary festival performance in the bag. All they can do is match the Coachella show.

a one-off........................apart from all the touring they did after with the exact same setup all around the world.....

I meant in terms of they had nothing booked (IIRC) prior to Coachella and that was originally just a one-off but then toured once they realised the live show worked.....but i take your point, I'd forgot about the 2007 tour!

Saw them at Global Gathering when they played in 2006, they have actually got bigger since then despite only releasing one fairly poor album. I think that RAM picked up a load of critical success at the time because nobody wanted to come out and say that the album was in fact a bit overproduced and shite, when I first listened to it I thought it was rubbish, have since grown to really like some of the album - there was talk of them doing a full remix album of RAM which theoretically would have been what they toured, but they seemingly stopped bothering after the Get Lucky remix they released barely made a ripple.

If they do ever tour again, I just hope they don't do festivals, put the money into the live show and do their own dates - but just can't see it happening again, they have no reason to bother with it.

I'd love to know the fee GG payed for them as exclusives that year

The thing is, although RAM is the only proper studio album in that time, Alive 2007 and the Tron Soundtrack have been huge factors in their size increasing over that time.  I listen to Alive 2007 more than any other Daft Punk album and certainly listen to Tron more than Human After All.

BTW, do you have any inside info from Ed Banger records?  What's the relationship between the label and the band these days?

Yeah that was incredibly poorly worded by myself, I think Alive 2007 is basically what made them as big as they are now, the clamour for the Tron soundtrack was absolutely huge too, and I really like it as piece of music too.

The only link I have with the label is that I was an absolute fan boy when I first signed up to the site, went to as many nights as I could, nearest I came to having insider info was blagging my way backstage at a Justice party and having a drunken chat with them

Actually watched that doc on the I player yesterday and really enjoyed it. Although my flatmate showed me this after, knew they weren't exactly the most original of artists but still ruined them a bit for me, cheeky lads.

I'd love to see them live again, caught them at oxygen 2007 I thought and they were awesome! As for RAM it verges more on disco for me and that's fine in my book! Having a listen now :-)

Sampling is fine but Robot Rock is as lazy as it comes. I'm assuming that video (haven't watched it) is the Discovery one though.

Yeah it's all the tracks on discovery, apparently one of their fathers worked at a record company (or something similar) so they would have had lots available to sample, although they quite clearly take the piss in some tracks...cue robot rock! Blatant copy!

How did the Kaiser Chiefs get them to play Leeds?

O2 wireless was, for that year only, a two venue festival in both leeds and london. Kaisers daft punk and white stripes headlined each day. Such were the pull of kaisers back then they must have insisted on playing their home town of leeds as well as part of the deal, as it never happened before that year or since. Ergo, they convinced the organisers at least in part to have an entire 2nd leg in leeds and thus daft punk played here. If it wasnt for kaisers headlining one day then it almost certainly wouldnt have happened in leeds

Can't wait until June 2017! A festival free of exam burdens is the best gift that I can receive. Ables me to speculate without the fear of missing out on the best collection of entertainment the world can give (including some great bands)

Daft Punk would be an interesting choice of act for Pyramid. A bit of a niche headliner.

BUT

Could they do the Other Stage? Against a significantly sized Pyramid headliner to split the crowd up, as I could see Daft Punk posing a decent competition to who else is on.

Daft Punk at Wireless is, to this day, the most amazing thing i have ever seen. Would love to see them on the Pyramid but it's not going to happen. Unless they buy into the 'Pyramid on the Pyramid' idea. I'm convinced they believe Alive 2007 can't be bettered.

Wasn't it great!

On the day, the thing that made it so great was the fact that everyone (the other smaller stage finished before DP's set...so it was 'everyone') seemed to have this attitude of "this'll be good"...and then just looked joyously dumbstruck at how fucking amazing it was.

Nothing to chinstroke or intellectualise about, it was just big, dumb, dancey, happy, fanfuckingtastic spectacular fun.

NB: And I still only really listen to the first album!

IF Daft Punk ever tour again and IF they played Glastonbury (that last if is the biggest of all) there's no chance they'd be on Other - they'd be one of the biggest bookings the festival could make and would definitely be on the Pyramid (as has been said - a Pyramid on the Pyramid would be too good to pass up). I think another festival, probably Wireless again, would throw more money at them though and get them on an exclusive insuring an instant sell out

This is incorrect/ I saw the Who headline O2 wireless leeds, supported by flaming lips, Eels and the Zutons. With Super furries headlining (or subbing) the 2nd stage. This was in 2006.

ahhh... oh well. it can't have done very well even in the daft punk year as it never happened again after 07.

it also doesnt mean that KC didnt have any influence on it taking place in leeds as well in 2007 though.

It would be a huge booking for the Orher Stage. Certainly the biggest in living memory.

On the Pyramid: an iconic booking, and with more thought a Pyramid on the Pyramid would be terrific. However my niche argument does still stand.

They do seem to be a budget breaker though, especially considering how much more they'd be offered to play Wireless.

That's one hell of a different line up compared to the stuff they put on now.

Wireless 2007 had The White Stripes, QOTSA, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Air and the mighty CSS!! To name a few, it certainly fell by the way side and dramatically

How are Daft Punk niche?! They play house music which is huge right now. One of the biggest selling singles of 2013. Number one albums. Iconic image. Who doesn't know Daft Punk?!

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
    • Easily my favourite set of the day.
