Friday opener?

Good point FF! Maximo Park seem the better bet of the two then , thankfully. (I don't know why the Enemy were in my head, I am sure they have announced an album or something? Was just shitest active band I could think of :P)

I fully expect to be derided for this, but I really enjoyed their first album and would be fairly happy with them opening the festival

Me to! I think it'd attract quite a few people if it was the first album.

It won't be Franz Ferdinand on account of them being in Paris that night and mainland Europe before then.

FFS are set to play Sunday if Sparks' website is to be believed so it shouldn't clash with Kanye - however if you're mainly there for the Franz Ferdinand tracks you could end up disappointed as I can't imagine them doing more than two or three.

I see, thanks dental.

will be hillarious if when we get the full lineup (whenever that may be...) that there simply is no special guest on the friday and its all back to normal :sarcastic:

to be honest the billed acts (hives, blondie) have clearly been better received than the not billed acts. i would certainly not shed a tear if they changed things up again. its always a load of speculation about what turns out to be nothing at an hour that is far too early for enjoying anything properly anyway.

plus what about all these fantastic bands that are actually billed this year!! PLUS all the ones we dont even know about yet.

Yeah I wouldn't mind them doing away with it. The magic of the 'secret set' is lost when it's just an act that could have been billed anyway on an appropriate stage but earlier in the day and also, as you say, Blondie and The Hives were billed in a slot earlier in the day than they would have been and fared much better. It's not a tradition I've grown attached to anyway.

Isn't the point in the 'sercet' other stage opener to get people out of beds and campsites to enjoy more music.

The hives and blondie may well have had a smaller crowd if they didn't spark people's interest with the set before.

It's the same as the William Green opening party. Some people may never venture to them parts of the festival if it wasn't for them 'secret' sets. The food and bar places near WG certainly benefit from it on a Thursday.

I think them sets do more for the festival than people realise

    • TVOD are playing Blue Basement in London 2/9 with a complete EOTR/Psych Fest shaped hole before their next gig in Lyon on 8/9. Well received in the Big Top last year, reckon they're nailed on for a secret set in the Tipi.
    • Didn't they widen the entrance last year to enable them to increase the number of pitches or have I imagined this? Perhaps they might return under a different form of glamping?
    • It should forever be the Tipi.   Just as the news about Geese was shared on Twitter.
    • It really surprised me that Rock AM Ring made Download feel like an extremely well organised festival with good communication in comparison. If we were to ever try either of them again we would go for IM Park and stop in Nuremberg.     Agree that the long thin mainstage isn't great, but where the mainstage is makes it really hard to navigate when it is busy because of that choke point created by the food vendors, bar/lounges with a view of main and where the crowd is coming form second stage. The concrete is hard on the joints. The front standing is a pisstake and the communication from the fest about what is happening on site other than which campsites are filling up leaves a lot to be desired. Car parks being a free for all doesn't help either.   I think it really suffers being so far from anything other than small towns/villages that lack proper public transport and Koblenz being the closest town which you can can use to get public transport to the fest being 60km away.
    • Yeah its absolutely on me that isn't think Shinia Twain was an awful choice- i get that.  Im still of the paul simon, ELO kind of thoughts but I realise things change. Im still intrigued what constitutes legend though. Robert plant played and he wasn't a legend slot- to me that would have fitted. Is it a ' comedy ' ' good time ' slot now? Comedy isn't the right word - guilty pleasure or something like that?
