Probably because in a lot of people's eyes, it was a better all round album that has propelled them to a new level. Just didn't have elephant or backwards on it.

Yeah its not on really, Blackstar deserves far more than a courtesy award. 

How in god's name have One Direction released a video deemed worthy of an award?

The nominees were announced 14th January, I suspect the "release window" was up to November.  Maybe next year.
